Welcome to the latest iteration of our Range Review series, where we walk you through key members of an important new model range. No need to get off the couch and over to your nearest car dealer for that...
The candidate this time is the new Honda CR-V, the fifth generation to wear the badge since 1995. Once again sourced from the company’s manufacturing hub in Thailand, the new model is intended to carry on the momentum set in motion by the great new HR-V and Civic family.
Indeed, while the superseded and ageing Honda CR-V felt a little off the pace against the Mazda CX-5, Hyundai Tucson, Toyota RAV4, Kia Sportage, Subaru Forester and Volkswagen Tiguan alongside functionally countless others, the signs this time around, are positive.

This is a great video which made me well understand what is being offered versus with what we need. Very helpful for a buyer who is weighing his options, like me. Thanks! More of those please (perhaps for the Fortuner-range?)

I'm a sucker for luxury so it's the VTi-LX for me. Just have to figure out how to afford it now.

The vti-lx is worth the extra$$ because of standard real-time AWD, active cornering LEd headlights is a major safety feature and the pano sunroof is almost like riding in a covertible without the bothersome wind. The vtec turbo can hit 7. 0 from 0-60. This car just does everything well: safety, tech, and comfort, design for 2017 is awesome too. Its no murano but its getting there as far as style goes👍

Have trialled the Tiguan and the CX-5 Touring and the CRV-LX and like the guys say above the VTi-S is probably the pick but the Honda boys at my local dealership are going to see if they can take the extra 2 seats out of the 7 seat VTi-L and replace the trim. Reason being that we like the leather sets and electric drivers seat but don't want to pay the 6 grand extra to get them in the LX We're empty nesters and the back seats mean little to us and will rarely be used but the huge boot space and full size alloy spare are big pluses. AEB would be great but we can live without it. I sometimes think we can get lost in the tech with the modern car. We'd buy a Tiguan no questions asked, it was enjoyable to drive but they are simply too expensive for what they are. The Mazda was the noisier of the three brands and the boot space smaller but of course it has AEB but for some reason it doesn't have Android Auto or Iphone carplay so everything keeps coming back to the Honda. It doesn't tick all the boxes but it ticks enough for us. Fingers crossed the Honda boys can change the config in the back of the L.

It is a really good looking car with loads of extras even on the base range such as push button start. I would pick the VTI or the VTI-S

No seems to mention the left hand mirror that’s tilts downward when the car is put into reverse.( top of the range CR-V)Loved it in our 2014 Accord and missing it greatly on our 2017 Civic Hatch.

Fairly annoying how much the Tiguan gets mentioned by journalists as having a massive boot - when the figure on paper they seem to be going off is with the rear seats slid all the way forward! The litres measurement seems pretty pointless - every manufacturer seems to have their own "standard" - would much prefer dimensions such as load lip height, floor to ceiling, width etc - as that's ultimately how you're going to decide what's going to fit in your new car.

We have had a 2018 CRV vti-s for a week now. Couple of pet hates are you can not put down the widows with the car in accessories mode. The automatic is pretty clunky when you put it in gear. Couple of times I have the keys in my pockets and bend over to pickup something of the ground and you accidentally open the automatic rear tailgate. Going to test it on a long run in the coming week 3000 kilometres round trip over 5 days. Interesting to see how fuel economy goes.

The car average 7.1 litres when we where doing 110 kilometres, but once we hit the Northern Territory it dropped down with the speed limit higher. Yes, 1.5 L turbo

I note with interest, that the 2018 model CR-V is now upgraded a little further. Full electronic, selected Automatic Transmission and with a 1.6 S, 2WD and a 1.6 SX AWD Turbo Diesel, added to the range. These two variants have just been released in the Philippines. My question is; *Will Australia be receiving the Diesel variants sometime in the near future?* , or are they models strictly restricted to the Asian countries?. It was interesting to hear that the SX comes with all the goodies, as listed on our VTi-LX, including the Panoramic roof and the reviewer gave a figure of around 18 kilometers per litre, which to us means aprox 5.5 litres per 100 kilometers. He reported a range of over 1000 kilometers from one tank. Quite impressive. Only downside I could find, is that the interior leather trim, is only available in black. Perhaps if Honda receives enough inquiries for light grey or beige trim, it would make that package even more attractive. Just thought I'd bring that up, as some may wish to choose the Diesel variant, if considering buying the new CR-V, that is of course, if Australia has plans to introduce it here. Cheers guys .Btw, as always, an excellent review...

Wow, CRV is so cheap in Australia. Here in Indonesia, the highest trim CRV is AUS $ 51.000. Also we don’t get the Honda sensing, only get the ‘nicer’ 5 spokes modulo rim.

Why doesn't the American market 2017 CRV have Panoramic Sunroof's? America sells more CRV's than any other market in the world, I don't get it..

Lol, maybe cause the American market sells more of its own vehicles. U should try looking at chevy or ford's range of SUVs if you want the panoramic sunroof. This is the Australian market here mate.

Funny that here in the US the LX is the bottom trim level and in Australia the LX is the top trim level. It must be one of those opposite hemisphere things like the direction your water swirls down the drain. Is VTi an abbreviation of anything? We don't have that here.

had my new black EX-L 2017 CR-V for about a month now. Ergonomically and build quality wise mine is miraculous. What is not miraculous is that beyond that the CVT transmission in mine just feels strange especially at low speeds. Backing out of my driveway, coming to a full stop to shift to the drive gear and it feels like there are a couple of very large gears still spinning in reverse coming quickly to a stop then change direction to forward its kind of unnerving. It runs kind of rough. I do not know why. The full on digital dash kinda sucks. It is indeed large, legible and properly LED lit and bright but the layout design just blows. Honda I predict does a sudden dash design change in two model years of this Gen. The touch screen in mine is slow as hell to start up when you start the vehicle it is like a full minute or more to be able to get to many features now only available through the touch screen. I sincerely there is an update for this...

You forgot to mention! 1. Lack lustre 1.5ltr turbo engine that doesn't match the vehicle ! 2. Excessive road noise back up through the cabin at highway speed. 3. Shocking overtaking performance and revs hard up to the red line even under moderate driving conditions ! You probably forgot to highlight these other detrimental features!!

Has nobody heard about the oil dilution problems on the 1.5 turbo engine. Honda havnt found a solution to this apart from a software update. Should be a recall because the injected petrol is finding its way past the piston rings and mixing with the oil. Honda great reputation for reliable vehicles could be severely damaged by this issue. Apparently it occurs in cold weather prior to the engine warming up.Check it out .
