I moved here in 1984 to do just that! MANGO'S grew the best and were the easiest. I planted a Malika "condo" mango tree. GORGEOUS tree AND fruit. Mulberries, Acerola (West indian cherries), bananas, Pineapples, sapodilla's, muscadine grapes, both green and purple, starfruit and more. I did discover, however, they need LOTS of water AND fertilizer. We've had some dry years here and so those years were not very productive for my fruit trees. Also, I lived in Western Palm Beach county, and also in Eastern Palm Beach county. The west gets a lot more rain and the soil is more rich, whereas eastern county is sandy and dry and needing more fertilizer, so choose your location carefully. I've had a full life growing fruit trees in Florida. Looking back though, I do miss the seasons and may have been just as happy staying in Alabama and growing peaches, blackberries, pecans, apples and cherries there, near all my family, instead of down here in the "gold quicksand". Be careful what you wish for!

Thank you for sharing. Who needs kitchen to cook if you have lots of big big fruits like that. I wished to live my whole life on only fruits. Love it.

Yes, there are many, many ways to use this great tasting fruit. It also can be made into a delicious syrup! Mmmmmm.

Thanks TFG! I'll let you know how it goes.

Sorry for this late reply. No, you do not need to have more than one tree to get fruit for the most common varieties - Arkin, Fwang Tung, Lara. Other varieties will still produce fruit without another tree, BUT you will get more fruit with two trees. TFGSF

The time it will take for your tree to fruit depends on many things. How big it is when you planted it? How well do you fertilize it? What kind of soils and light is it growing in? If you planted a 3 gal healthy tree in full sunlight and are fertilizing it properly, then you ought to be able to get fruit in 2-3 growing seasons. Check out the Univ. of Fla's publication on "Growing Carambola in Florida" (Google title) to find out fertilizer rates and other cultural suggestions. Good luck to you!

Great video! I've been thinking about growing some star fruit trees in containers. How long do your star fruit trees take before they start to flower and fruit? I've done some research and one website said 4-6 years, while another said only 10-14 months.

There was something else I forgot to add. Will I need at least two trees for cross-pollination, or will I be able to get fruit with just one tree?

my carambola was very delicious. it was from a store and was mildly sweet and kind of watery in flavor. Very good, like an apple but i was wondering if a blander variety is commonly sold at grocery stores. Thanks

Busca información sobre las carambolas pues pueden dañar los riñones de las personas y causar la muerte, acá en Puerto Rico se vendían en los supermercados y ahora lo prohibieron por esa causa.

I have a lot of problem with fruit fly ruining my crop - many kgs had to be binned from the last crop. The tree is flowering and fruiting again. I have hung a fruit fly trap in the tree (Wild May - not sure if you get that in America - I'm in sub-tropical Brisbane, Aus) but it's not catching any male fruit fly. How do you cope with this problem? The fruit are also supposed to be high in oxalic acid and not good for people with kidney problems in too large a volume.
@amariev2264 жыл бұрын
If you cut the green rib part off, you remove most all of the oxalic acid. Not sure how to help with the fruit flies. I did have problems with them on my guava tree here in South Florida. It seems to depend on the year and location. When I moved 10 miles east and planted guava's near the ocean, fruit flies were no longer a problem. Maybe the salt air?

Oh, I am not sure of the cultural practices of carambola growing in Australia. But try contacting our County's extension agent who could give you some suggestions to try. Send an email to: aghu@ufl.edu good luck! TFGSF

I work at Wegmans and I don't understand why people seem so scared to try them. They taste great and if they're sliced on a tray, people eat them like candy. Same with other tropicals like rambutan and pitaya. They like to pick them up and look, but no one seems to want to eat.

Oh, I just reread and saw you asked about containers. Hmm. I don't know that answer. Try calling the Cooperative Extension agency and ask them (305) 248-3311. I have not heard of anyone growing starfruit in containers, but I'd bet if it was a big container you might be able to fruit them. Let us know how you do!
