When I think back to childhood, I can remember vividly the smell of caramelized meat wafting throughout the house when my mom would make us this delicious dish. I am so excited to share with you my version of this classic Vietnamese entree.

It looks as if something else was added with the shallots, garlic and fish sauce. A dark coarse powder. Black pepper? 5 spice powder? Szechuan pepper?
