I didn’t go through all the comments to see if anyone has mentioned this but after filling the reservoir you can point the barrel up and push the plunger all the way back in. You’ll lose a small amount of water but the reservoir and feed section will remain full and I’ve found that there’s usually plenty of water remaining. This keeps you from accidentally pushing the plunger and also makes the brush length more manageable.

Instead of carrying a rag or paper to clean my waterbrush I use an old white sock [clean :) ] and cut the toe out - then I pop it on my non-dominant wrist [like a tennis players sweat band]. To clean the brush I wipe off on the sock and they are easy to throw in the wash with your rags. Also I don't have paper that easily blows away when I don't pay attention. I hope someone can use this tip.

Faber Castell has a water brush exactly like that. I bought one and works pretty good. The bad part is over time the piston get sort of stuck and the water can't go as easily as usual. The solution I found is to fill it with clean vinager, including the tip, for about 12 hours and it gets back to normal. I hope this helps anyone... :)

That makes sense. You are supposed to run plain white vinegar through your coffee maker every now and then to clean out mineral deposits. (or maybe you could try using distilled water, in the water brush)

I imagine the felt tip would work well on certain papers, just like the Tombow blender. Tombow blender works FABulous on some paper and quite poorly on others, and it's difficult to tell which paper without testing it. It might also work better with watercolor pencils rather than Inktense, but I have not tested that theory.

I'll second that! I am disabled too, so have to do all my shopping online plus have limited funds. If I order the wrong product, too bad so sad, that was all I could afford for now. And I find time and time again, when I try too hard to save money, I end up spending more in the long run to get a product that works. So reviews like this make my life so much better and easier. Thank you!💚

Yes, you are right, the bullet-shaped nip is for drawing. You fill up the tank with ink or liquid watercolor. It is quite fun to play with. I used Diamine Shimmer, pretty cool for effect inks. I guess as long there is no shellack in the ink, it is safe.:) I only use them as travel brushes.

I got this in the may sketchbox and wanted to make sure I was using the fiber tipped waterbrush right. you went through all the differences in these waterbrush versus typical ones. great review 😊 I love the fiber tipped brush for watercolor pencils. I've never been super into waterbrushes, I just prefer brushes unless I'm inking or writing, but the fiber brush is better than any waterbrush I've used, in my opinion 😊😊😊

Thank you for the lovely review, and a Happy New Year. As for the felt tip water brush, I like to use it for lifting dried watercolour from the paper. It's not as fine as it could be, but it's nice for dots and lines. It scrubs away colour much better than the softer tips of the brushes.

Caran d'ache has always been a favorite of mine since I was in school of art, l love their products. I don't have this particular water color brushes but I can tell you that the one with like a marker nib is a blender pen. Allot of crafters or card makers use this sort of pen to blend ink in their coloring. I've have done this with Distress Inks and they work beautiful to blend color and give shadows. Hope that makes sense, thanks for the review now I might given a try :D

Hello, I have these, and love them. I push the plunger back into the pen. It leaves plenty of water in the barrel, and you don't have to worry about accidentally pushing the plunger in and water going everywhere. Especially in a pencil case. The pen is shorter that way also. Have a great new year! :-)

Great tips, thank you. I use a similar brush from Faber Castle (spelling?), and it has a fine point. I rarely get a wet brush with it no matter how I squeezed the bulb. After seeing your video, I understand now why the fine tip stays so dry. I'll try a wider tip now. I really like the piston feature for filling it. I can't wait to try out some of your tips. I've been watching these segments, on and off, for a few months. It is little tips and observations that help me understand this mysterious medium. I had a great and supportive instructor during my High School years. At the time, he thought me good enough to help in his adult night classes for two semesters. But, as most would share, that was over 40 years ago. A stroke or three, wiped out my dormant talents as a watercolorists, of sorts. Gone was my, "on board" knowledge of the medium. It has been a struggle to just draw due to hand, eye, muscle coordination. I find Steve's little segments very helpful. I find him knowledgeable and more then willing to share his knowledge in a relaxing, matter of fact approach. My wife, pictured in the profile photo, can come and relax with Steve and Reese and follow along. Steve's segments on water color pencils, and water brushes opened-up a whole new world to me. Thanks and keep 'em comin!

Great to see you before Christmas. On vacation in Thailand and I love browsing the only waterbrush I have seen is this one at more than double my Pentel in uk. I have been wondering why, so now I know. With the syringe you surely cannot load it at home, I find so far my Pentel doesn't leak so you need no access to water. I actually fill it and a small spritzer with a syringe for refilling printer ink. Merry Christmas.

The felt tip works well to emulsify Neocolor II Caran d'Ache water soluble wax pastels, as well as water soluble pencils. Perhaps this is what the company intended to do? I like the piston mechanism, as it does not allow dirty water from the tip to come back to the reservoir. I've had this happen with Pentel or Faber Castell water brushes. Thanks for this test/review, Steve.

Just got that felt tip with April's Sketchbox. It's hard to carry filled up with water in the field due to the fact the plunger can be accidentally pushed down easily. I used it with watercolor pencils and it's ok but I much prefer my water brushes when I use the pencils. Just my opinion but I think it's a lot easier to blend. Maybe I just need to practice with it a bit more. Great review!

If you half-fill the reservoir, you can push the plunger down. It must have a hole in it because it fills up with the existing water in the reservoir and won't force any water out. Hope that helps. I carry mine with water all the time and they don't leak (so far). --nina.

They sell the caran d’ache ones at my local art supply store but not the pentel aquash. I got the Kuretake water brushes instead though, they’re decent enough. The controlling of the water flow is similar to the pentel I think. But to fill them up with water, you only have a teeny hole so you have to fill it up by pressing the handle to suck up water rather than holding it under a faucet

My watercolors have been staining the tips of these - especially the the red one. The same thing happened to my Polar Flo brushes. It was helpful for the tips to stay white so I could see when they were loaded with color, but now I can't see much because of the staining. Oh well. I found that to fill the piston completely (and easily) - put the part with the hole in the water and pull the piston. Then take it out of the water and hold it do the part with the hole is at the top. The air in the tube should rise to the top and the water will settle to the bottom. Carefully push the piston up until the water reaches the top where the hole is. Then place the unit back into the water and pull once more. This should fill the entire unit with water.

Hi Steve, this is what Jacksons Art Supply site says about the different tips...just different tools I guess Suitable for all watercolour on paper techniques. These brushes with a reservoir are practical and easy to use. The three types of tip (large, medium and fibre) provide a full range of tools to explore all water-based techniques (watercolour, gouache, pastel). The pump system makes it easy to clean the brush's synthetic fibres with water. Ideal for travel, art classes as well as quick sketches, this portable set is perfect for fans of watercolour paintings. Might solve the mystery of that fiber tip

As always, I very much enjoyed your video! I did purchase the set a few months ago and unfortunately did not completely clean the large brush completely and now despite my best efforts, it is totally blocked. I even used another tutorial on filling the chamber, to be sure that I was doing it correctly. The other two work just fine. I've tried soaking it in water and forcing water through. The best I could get was a drop of water escaping from around the outside of the unit, not near the brush, due to the extreme pressure. (I am stuck in bed, due to an injury, otherwise I probably wouldn't have bothered:). Any suggestions?? Thank you!

Merry Christmas to you Steve and to all the followers on your channel. You bust my creation and your videos invite me to try other stuff that i didn't do before. I've the Caran d'Ace set and also Derwent and Pentel. There of a great use with art journaling and i do use them with primecolors of Derwent Inktense sticks, that i reduce in powder and then delete them in water. I also use them with my Caran d'Ache Neocolor II Sticks and Supracolor pencils. I think the Caran d'Ache set is the best for charging brushes with self prepared liquid watercolor, because of the charging possibilities. Great with sepia and Pane's grey in my Moleskines books and pre charged with magenta, blue and red i do travel light.

2:03 It was very finicky to figure out how to fill the barrel. When I first pulled back the piston back it filled only 1 third or so of the barrell. Then I took it off from the water turned it up, pushed out the air, then repeated again, the second and third time I was able to fully fill the barrell.

You can actually collapse the brush even when the reservoir is full! After filling, you can turn it into a vertical position so that the back of the brush is pointing downwards and filling hole up. At this point water will flow inside the piston which is hollow inside. Now you can push the piston back, and only air (and possibly a little bit of excess water) will be expelled.

+Akos Kovacs You can fill it so both the body and piston are full. If you do that you can't collapse it without expelling water through the brush.

i think maybe if you put down lines with watercolour pencils, that the hard brush works nice with the blending of the pencil lines?

The product rep for Caran D'Ache demonstrated how to fill the brushes at a local CPSA meeting earlier this year. If you were traveling with the plunger extended, you would most likely find a puddle in your bag when it was accidentally pushed back in plus you could easily damage it extended. The plunger is intended to be depressed after filling the waterbrush.

Thanks for the input. I discovered as much through trial and error. Turns out since making this video I've discovered this is not my favorite water brush by a long shot. The little bulb squeezer failed me on a couple occasions. Pentel Aquash is still my favorite. An excellent and dependable performer.

I have the black one and I love it! I think they have a better tip than Pentel, higher quality and stiffer bristles, which allows me to have more control. I want to buy the blue one for brush lettering :)

Felt tip brush might be nice with inktense pencils, because somtimes there harder to get the pencil lines of the paper when you add water if you put to much pigment down. nice review and Merry Christmas :)

Thanks! My single brush came with no instructions so i was clueless. Not sure I care for the extended piston though but the brush point works nicely for drawing.

Agreed. The piston seems cool at first but I think I still prefer the simpler squeeze body like the Pentel Aquash.

Another commentator suggested that JetPens has a video on how to fill the brush so the piston doesn't extend. I find that if I half-fill the reservoir, then I can slowly push the piston down -- it must have a hole in it -- it fills up with the existing water in the reservoir and doesn't push the water out. Hope this helps. --nina.

maybe the felt tip style is meant to be filled with ink? or watercolors? it might be used as a sort of customizable marker.

+Nrai I haven't tried it but it should work. For me that just duplicates the function of other markers I have. I prefer just leaving water in it for blending WC pencil and such.

I use them too, but countered that after a while (say ten hours of drawing and painting) one of the brushes didn't flow water unless you pressed very hard. Laying it in water didn't help. It's as if the tip was blocked, as pulling in water in the back part still is possible and quite easy. How can I solve this< because the felt tip is starting too. I use clean water and aquarel/ecoline paint. and aquarelpencil.

Jan Molenaar try soaking it in vinegar for a few hours to remove any built up minerals from the water, pushing the vinegar through to the brush ends, then take it apart for a good soak of all parts. rinse it good afterwards and it will restore it nicely.

I would imagine you're supposed to load the felt tip brush with a coloured mix, like an ink or already mixed watercolour. Rather than plain water.

Regular. Water brushes are mostly helpful for quick on location sketching. They're a bit more difficult to use and don't do all the things a normal brush does.

+Marco Monterroso Probably works fine. I personally prefer to pick it up rather than fill it. You have more control of the amount of color and intensity. Unless you plan to color a very large area. The felt tip nib did seem to facilitate nice controlled washes. I think it works best though as a WC pencil blender.
