The possible uses for carbon fiber are many and still being explored. In our industry, we agreed with the many who thought it was smart to apply the technology used for bridges, skyscrapers, and bomb shelters, to a cracked or bowing wall. Because of its very high tensile strength (doesn’t stretch), it can be adhered to concrete walls to keep them from bowing inward. Today it’s a common method used to reinforce foundation walls. If installed properly- emphasis on properly- they can effectively hold the bowing wall in place but, be aware, that the wall will never be able to move back to its original position. There are three kinds of straps that are common: -Baked, rigid carbon fiber, which is almost a plate-like strap. - Baked, vertical carbon fiber strips intertwined with horizontal Kevlar to create a “grid” strap. - And wet layup fabric straps such as CarbonArmor made by Supportworks If your basement wall is bowing in the middle and HASN’T started to slide in at the bottom, or lean in at the top, and if your wall crack DOESN’T have differential movement on either side of the crack, then carbon fiber straps may be a suitable option. Carbon fiber is also a good choice to consider when you have limited access in your basement, since no large equipment is needed and it doesn’t take up space after installation. Pros: It’s a low profile design that won’t take up your basement space and works in tight spaces. It presents minimal disruption to your home and won’t disturb your lawn or landscaping. If you want to finish your basement, you don’t have to worry about ugly black strips on your walls. You can paint over these systems to conceal them. The installation and cure times are fast and everything is completed within one day. There is no maintenance involved after the project is finished. Carbon fiber straps are a good solution if your wall hasn’t started bowing heavily yet and the cracks are no wider than the thickness of a dime. You should always consult an engineer before installing them, since the results are extremely dependent on a variety of factors that the average homeowner is unaware of. There are different types of carbon fiber straps, some better than others. The highest quality system is called CarbonArmor by Supportworks. Dry Guys has access to any system you choose, but we do recommend the leading system in the industry, a system that, only a certified dealer of Supportworks like us, is authorized to install. Whatever you go with, make sure you take into account tilt resistance as this can compromise the entire system, and adhesion to the wall is very important. This system is not the cure-all for wall cracks, so beware of any contractors that treat it as such. DIY is not recommended if you aren’t an engineer or you don’t want to put in the effort to pay close attention to detail. The cost of carbon fiber can be less than adjustable steel I-beams such as our PowerBraces, but unlike what many will tell you, it is NOT a substitute for steel. The two systems serve different purposes, and each has its place. Know the difference. Get the proper system for your specific problem. Sometimes PowerBraces are necessary. Sometimes you need our Geo-lock earth anchors. Sometimes your problem is not what you think it is.

Can you tell me the "K" rating of the carbon fiber itself? Is it 3K, 12K, etc? Thanks
@DryGuysNJ

@@moodberry Hi Doug. Sorry it took so long to answer this question but we actually didn't know the answer so we reached out to Supportworks (the creators of CarbonArmor) and asked the engineers what the rating was. They said in all their years making CarbonArmor they've never been asked that question so they'd have to dig a little deeper to find the answer. I will update you here if we get a specific number at some point. I'm assuming you want to know the strength of the CarbonArmor compared to other carbon fiber straps? If so, the K rating isn't very useful because the true strength actually depends on the strength of the wall itself and proper adhesion technique. These were the exact words from the engineers at Supportworks: The K rating for carbon fiber identifies the number of fiber strands that exist in each bundle or tow of fabric. “K” refers to one thousand, so a 3k tow is made up of 3,000 carbon filaments. This number alone is not very useful and in all the years of providing CarbonArmor, this is the first time we have received a request for the K rating. The strength information (tech specs) provided in the technical manual are the composite properties (cured fiber and epoxy), which is what matters with these systems. These specs should provide a designer what they need

@@DryGuysNJ Fantastic video you made. And I didn't really expect a response to my question, but this shows how reputable you are. Most people wouldn't bother answering or digging deeper. Thanks.

@@moodberry Agreed! And it makes sense to me that the total strength rating would be on the final assembly/composite rather than the components. Lots of examples in woodworking and fiberglass boatbuilding where the adhesion of the resin and the strength of the framing members are the major limiting factors in a repair. While I'm here, this video was entertaining too, great intro story :)

Great instructive value! Do you have a system like ArmorLock that also anchors to the footing (bottom structure) to prevent inward shear? Under what conditions would you choose steel I-beams over carbon fiber?
@DryGuysNJ
@DryGuysNJ 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your questions! We do not anchor to the footing because if your issue is that severe (like when there's shearing), carbon fiber straps are not recommended to begin with. In that case, we'd go with steel I-beams. I-beams are for when the problem is too severe for carbon fiber straps to make sense.

Theoretically wouldnt if be best if all basement foundation concrete be better off if they were reinforced in the first place?
@DryGuysNJ
@DryGuysNJ 3 жыл бұрын
Yes! Most concrete is reinforced by the builder, but over time some of these initial build solutions fail. It could be hydro-static pressure, concrete that was mixed too "wet" at installation, basic installation error or simply not enough rebar for reinforcement. Not every house has this issue, but that's why we are here to help the ones that do.

Can Carbon Fiber be used on a bowing brick foundation wall? Also what are your thoughts on using high strength steel straps for a bowing brick foundation wall? Thanks.

What is the warranty for carbon armor? What do other products warranties look like?
@DryGuysNJ
@DryGuysNJ 3 жыл бұрын
The warranty for the CarbonArmor straps is 25 years. Most places do a lifetime warranty on their fiber straps which in New Jersey is 8.5 years. The thing is that only the strap is warrantied- not the wall. So if your wall continues to have issues, that is not counted in the warranty, and they will not replace your wall. We also only technically have the warranty on the strap but we would never recommend straps on a wall that a strap wouldn't work on anyway. We usually use steel because it works for more situations. And we do fix any issues and follow-up often with our systems. If we recommend a carbon fiber strap for your basement it's because we're sure it will work in that specific circumstance.

can anyone explain differential movement a little more in detail ?
@DryGuysNJ
@DryGuysNJ 3 жыл бұрын
To put it simply, there are three types of foundation settlement. Uniform settlement is when the entire house sinks at the same time, so it doesn't break apart and there are no cracks. Tipping settlement is when the house tips at an angle but, once again, stays together, it's just no longer even. Differential settlement is when one piece of the foundation sinks while the rest doesn't (usually caused by uneven soils underneath). That's where you'll start to see things like stair-step cracks.

Sorry for the late reply, we are in New Jersey but we're part of the Basement Systems Network. If you give our office a call (856-371-3800) let them know your location and situation and they will connect you with one of our sister companies in your area. That company will also be under the Basement Systems umbrella and do the same quality of work with the same products.
