Some range footage shooting a 7.9x57mm (8mm Mauser) Carcano carbine.
Loads used are cast bullets from Lyman mold 323470, some powder coated and some conventionally lubed, with a mild load of Green Dot powder. As the 8mm Carcano used a special, and unobtainable, charger for loading I load mine by removing the bolt and hooking the round under the extractor and re-inserting the bolt into the rifle. There are single shot adapters made today that are a better and safer way to do this than what I am doing.

Note to viewers: I would not recommend shooting one of these little 8mm converted Carcano carbines with surplus ammo or powerful European specification hunting ammo. If you want to shoot one of these have the headspace checked out by a competent gunsmith and stick to cast bullets or at the most the milder North American loaded "8mm Mauser" loads. Also, get one of the single shot adapters that allow you to drop a round into the action to avoid the somewhat sketchy procedure of removing the bolt to load as I'm doing in the video.

(To me) a rifle like that is about cast bullet fun, it's not your main hunting gun, not the rifle that you use for precession shooting, not your camp perry competition rifle, nor your trophy collectible rare prise rifle. It's about that side of your mind where you like testing cast bullets and seeing if you can make it shoot surprisingly small groups. and that has rich rewards. -Dave

I agree, there does not have to be a particular "purpose" other than the experimenting and of course have a bit of fun along the way. It's even better when you can do it with a rifle that you paid $35 for!

There is now a plactic (3d print) single shot adatper for the Carcano that works for all 3 chamberings. I have one it works.

Great video, thanks for sharing. While I don’t have this caliber of carcano, I do have.an 1888 commission rifle and a M95m Styer Mann, both in 8mm Mauser which I only shoot lead bullets in. Best to be safe and enjoy.
@314299
@314299 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, not much point in putting the old ones to harsh use with full power ammo. I shoot only cast in my Commission rifle as well, with all the sight adjustment its still possible to hit the target even with the lower velocity cast loadings.

After not knowing very much about them (other than the rumours that said they were terrible - they're not), I've developed a bit of a Carcano obsession. A collection is starting to form in the safe...

Fortunately the sights were close to the point of impact with this load which made it possible to get a few rounds on target.

Cool. This is the first time I see someone shooting the Carcano in 8mm Mauser. I was considering to buy one recently, but decided against it because I was advised against actually shooting it. There seem to be doubts about the stability of the action when having to handle a cartridge that is significantly stronger than the 6.5mm Carcano. So, the very few 8mm Carcanos that exist (here where I am, at least), are mostly just reference pieces in collections.

I would not fire full power surplus ammo, or European specification hunting ammo in one of these, but cast loads or North American loaded "8mm Mauser" power loads should be fine if the headspace is OK. It's not that I think the action would not hold up with full power loads (that's what they were converted to fire), it's just that the recoil and blast would be horrendous and therefore most unpleasant. The stocks are very short and the carbine weighs very little so I cannot imagine they would be pleasant to fire with full power loads.
@BitBurgers
@BitBurgers Жыл бұрын
@@314299 Yeah, you are right, the blast and recoil are probably gonna be quite bad if you use full power ammo out of these. Concerning the stability of the action, there is probably no significant danger, as you said. Plus, over here those guns will have CIP proofing, meaning that they have been fired with loads that have 20% higher gas pressure that the strongest commercially available loads. But still, since my collector buddy said he doesn't shoot his at all, I got some doubts that I can't shake off. And he's not a person to shy away from something that seems a little risky.

The 8mm conversions will not work with a 6.5mm enblock clip, as the 8mm case is fatter. Apparently there were some 8mm specific enblock clips made but they are basically unobtainable. Single loading right into the chamber will not work on this example, as the front of the extractor is flat and will not "jump" the rim of the case. The Carcano is a "controlled feed" action, so even if a given example will snap over the rim of a round if single loaded it's a good way to break the tip off the extractor. The best solution is to use one of the single shot adapters that is loaded into the action like a clip, then a single round can be dropped in and will feed correctly. As I don't have one of those I use the rather sketchy method shown of removing the bolt and placing a round under the extractor - I don't recommend anyone else do this, I'm just showing what I have done. The mold I use is the Lyman 323470, it is a "Lovern" style mold and a good one for various 8mm's.
