A play-through and few words of discussion about this very important and popular study by Carcassi.
There is one thing I missed out of the lesson part and that is the problem of the 'pf' dynamic found at the beginning of the piece. In this context it has to mean 'poco' forte' and the difficulty is knowing whether this should mean louder or softer than 'mf' - which means moderately loud, normally considered one down from forte. I think I always assumed pf to mean the same as mp as there are no examples of mp in Carcassi that I can find. However most evidence seems to point to pf being louder than mf.
The main thing is not to let the question get in the way of playing the piece!

Played well and appreciate your insights. This etude gives the guitarist a piece that he can almost listen to from a distance, since it's not technically all that challenging.

+Shelley Larkin many thanks for your thoughts, but yes while some studies are not that interesting, part of the point really, is to find the *musical* aspect in what one is playing, so its really important to keep that in mind even while working on the technical dimensions.

Yes, I work on my own mostly and sometimes find it hard to hear the musical bits unless of course I get lucky enough to hear someone who can bring that out for me as you did. Any tips?

+Shelley Larkin one tip is to find the musical core of a piece is to make sure to sing the melody lines (play along with yourself at first if you need) and then sing the bass lines etc, basically to find as many different ways of relating to the content as you can.
