Cardboard Shelter: Brussels homeless people given tents to sleep

A Belgian designer has come up with an origami cardboard shelter to hand out to homeless people during the winter. The idea is to prevent deaths on the streets due to the cold and to provide rough sleepers with some privacy. Jack Parrock reports.

Cardboard is actually warm and if you spray it you can make it waterproof..

I'll take a try at why canvas is illegal and cardboard is legal. (so far cardboard is legal) Brussels and places around Brussels has so many hikers, and people who go camping, they have to limit the people who would just walk thru Brussels by camping out on the streets.

Agreed. Very idiot. BUT I'm guessing part of the reason has to do with people abandoning their canvas tent once they rip, and it becomes a trash issue, whereas the cardboard can be recycled.

@@TheShowgunofHarlem only if they knew how to sew. Canvas is an extremely robust materia. I am surprised that they will leave the canvas behind.

This is wonderful. Bravo!!! Great example to emulate. Maybe recycle companies could create these tents for distribution to homeless. Good done without waste.

I think it is great what he is doing. If I had the money or had someone help with donations I would build one out of the 2 inch pink insulation board. Its light weight, water proof and would be warm and prob could heat with a few candles or maybe even a small homemade stove made out of a coffee can or something. It saddens me to see people homeless because we are all one paycheck away from being right there where they are. Thank you and God bless you for what you do. 💞

The key is "we are only a pay check away." The excuse is "if only." When you want to do something, do it. Even if it's not on a large scale it is a start. Waitings for that big budget help is the same as starting now by building one shelter at a time. All you need to sacrifice is ten dollars a day, basically your lunch. Anyway just an idea for "if" you truly want to do it.

Previously land was free. Whoever wanted to build a house anywhere, they would build it. But now you have to buy a land to build a home. If some land is just free and homes could be built at that place, then anybody should be allowed to build a home at that place. There are poor people's who live in footpaths beside a road and many who cannot pay rent as work has been shut down due to covid19 . They could simply build a mud house and stay in it. It would be cheap to build. Afterwards when at that place something has to be built, then they should leave that place and make homes in other places where homes can be built and that place is just not used at that time.

I would like to start something like this but would need the plans on the shelter. Also, I need to make sure it can withstand -50 Celsius weather. There are thousands upon thousands of fellow humans living here in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada who have been purposely cut off their living allowance, thus creating this homeless issue. Winnipeg has no plan to combat this but rather sets up more for the business of poverty. HELP!

I'm curious, where do the 35$ go ? I read it's illegal to have canvas tents in Brussels, and camping is illegal, so I'm not going to give the 'you can buy an actual, water resistant tent for that money'. Also, I can see there is plastic foil applied to some of the edges, but 35$ still seems steep...no ?

Its a big problem in the US. In Europe its harder to become homeless because of the good social welfare system but it still happens. A lot of European countries are not as wealthy as say Belgium, France or Germany and their people migrate looking for work and end up sleeping rough.

People have died in their car from no heat or there car was stuck within thee snow they wheeled but could not seem to move their car the snow was to much and there just out there choose to stay there.
