After myocardial infarction, a number of intracellular enzymes and proteins are released from the damaged cells.
They have diagnostic importance and are called cardiac markers.
The cardiac markers of major diagnostic interest includes, enzymes such as:
- Creatine kinase (CK)
- Lactate dehydrogenase (LD)
- Serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST) or serum glutamate transaminase (SGOT).
Non-enzyme proteins such as:
- Cardiac troponin T and I (cTnT and cTnI)
Myoglobin (Mb).
