Speaking as an advanced boo-boo making beginner, my first 2 cardigans were by Tara Lynn Morrisson----NANAIMO and KINIKIN. Both knitted top-down with larger needles and bulky-super bulky yarn. Quick, easy, and a huge confidence builder! No buttons, pockets, or special shaping techniques. For me me that is not/or would not be a "beginner" pattern. Also, Ashley Lillis---produces FULL -length video tutorials for cardigans, pullovers, and vests. If you need a friend to "show you", she is your gal! Might be ready to attempt Caidree's "Home" Sweater. Thanks for compiling.

Great video! My first cardigan was the Felix by Amy Kristoffers, and it was really great. By then I had already knit a sweater by Isabelle Kraemer, who had German Short Rows with a linked video so I knew what to do when I got to the Felix. I really think I lucked out by knitting Isabelle Kraemer first. Her patterns are so well written, and the Felix was also great.

I actually started with a doll vest and will be starting the doll-sized sweater next. Then I plan on a baby sweater, toddler sweater, and then I'll try a simple sweater pattern for myself. The vest turned out really cute! Thank you, Tanya, for your tips and descriptions of the various sweaters; it is so helpful. Happy knitting, everyone!

Tonia, your videos are so informative and have helped this relativity new knitter get a better idea of where to start when considering a new project. The sources out there can be so overwhelming with the sheer number of patterns it can be impossible to know what's appropriate for a beginner. A project that is way beyond a knitters ability could turn them off from knitting completely. I almost quit several times in the beginning by biting off more than I can chew. Knitting should be fun to learn. Not a chore. Just remember that babies have milk before meat.

I would highly recommend the Kylie cardigan by Ann Klimpert. It is a garter stitch cardigan so no purling. It is a top down circular yoke cardigan. There is no ribbing on the bottom so casting off is easier. Plus picking up for the button bands is easier because you pick up 1 to 1 on the garter stitch. There is also a Baby Kylie if you want to start with a smaller version. I made both the baby and adult versions, and they both fit very well.

Those were some great patterns. I love cardigans, and I don't have enough of them. If I wanted to modify a drop shoulder and bring it up on the shoulder, how hard would that be? I'm a size 2X and drop shoulder designs make me look even bigger. I need things to fit in the shoulders and chest then get looser.
@NerdyKnitting
@NerdyKnitting Жыл бұрын
You could make it closer fitting - you'll just want more room in the armhole (since it will be up closer to the actual armhole than just around the bicep). A set-in sleeve construction might be a better choice.

Hellow! The striped one, in maxi long would be nice to knitt. Do you have eny sudgestions for long cardigans? For cold winters in an bulcy yarn perhaps? And sudgestions? Strigth forward knitting on a rundneedel for example?! Not need the stripes but the modell seems rigth but in midi or maxi long! Barbro Sweden

The Umami Cardigan, Designs by Phanessa, has a free written pattern as well as a KZfaq Video Tutorial. Oversize Cardigan with drop sleeves knit bottom up, overall stockinette pattern with a built in garter stitch edge with ribbing on bottom and the cuffs. Knit with Super Bulky yarn so it knits up really quick. You do need size 19 needles for a large portion of it which takes a bit getting used to in the hand, but once you do, its done in a flash. I get compliments left and right on it and am knitting it for my mother this year for a Christmas present as she super covets it! Thanks for all of the other suggestions. For some reason I'm afraid of raglan shaping! I've done all sorts of intermediate and advanced knitting techniques and stitches but always shy away from Raglan, but your comment saying that it is easier than drop blew my preconception out of the water. You've now given me the confidence to try it! Thanks!

Hi Tonia, this is such a helpful video. I have a question. I've just started knitting again after a 40-year break from it. I'm wondering if it is much more common to knit garments from the top down now? In my younger days I think that patterns were mainly knitted from the bottom up in pieces. Another question, do you need to use a circular needle to knit from the top down? If so, do you have a video or some tips on that? Many thanks
@NerdyKnitting
@NerdyKnitting 10 ай бұрын
While you'll find patterns for garments knit in both directions (top down and bottom up) it seems like the most popular method right now is knitting them in the round from the top down on circular needles. I'm afraid I don't have any videos on that topic, though!

@@maureen4669 Designer Julie Hoover has a strong opinion on this topic. All her designs are for bottom up and almost all are seamed for what she believes is the best fit and the best construction. I've found that to be true, so far.

I want to knit Lion Brand wool ease thick and quick fitted knits mini cardigan. I bought the yarn and only 3 balls of wool ease as that is what required. I didn't realise it was a top down pattern which I have never done. I really like the pattern so I will give it a go. However if I can't manage it can you recommend a pattern for chunky size 9 mm needles mini cardigan bottom up

That Comodo does look interesting , that would just float over my bum :) Oh my... cracking up at my own expense here :D Being a Beginner going to need more experience for alter- to- fit. That Douglas Cardi brought out terrible terrible mental visions that left me giggling at the thought of it I can imagine those pockets falling under my bossom, going to say this one is NOT going to flatter me , hahaha perhaps in a few years as things go south, I can use those pockets :P
