UW Control won the first ever pro tour and was the first ever widely shared decklist before netdecking was even vaguely a concept. Today we look at the rise (And Fall) of one of the game's most beloved archetypes.

In a future Cardmarket Feature Match, I'd like to see a rematch of the finalist decks in the first world championship. It would be fun to see those decks played, but by players that have a modern professional understanding of the game. Like Toffel vs Arne. Proxy time!

I’m disappointed to report that Azorius control is still alive and well in Pioneer. As a mono-red player, I keep a couple copies of Fry in my Sideboard to snipe Teferi before he becomes inevitable. I’d love to see a history of Tron, and what the different targets have been over the years.

It's also kicking around in Historic pretty effectively but that format is full to the brim with 20+ aggro decks which makes things difficult. Tbf it's kind of a Lotus Field cheese deck that just wins off turn 3 Teferi but it's there. Edit: if Stifle was legal in modern, there's a world where Azorius Lotus Field has a shot but in the Historic cardpool it's something else.

I will never forget the UW control in RTR/Theros. I started playing around this time and I thought the deck was unbeatable. I played in a local PTQ and one of the guys from our hometown brought UW control, and every time he lost a game I was completely flabbergasted. He ended up in top 8 but didn't secure the win, and I'll never forget that day :) Great video, I loved this.

Red/Green Monsters, Black Devotion, Blue Devotion, Blue/White Heroic, Green/White Aggro, Green Devotion and Blue/White Control - That format was peak MTG Blue white was objectively the best deck I think. Monsters and Black Devotion could beat it, but it was just the best deck against everything else. Hilariously, back then I managed to create the hardcounter for it: Maze's End. The only deck that Blue/White Control couldn't beat was tutoring for tap-lands that win you the game.

I turned my UW heroic deck into UW Control. I loved the power of Sphinx's Revelation and was addicted to watching SCG events with UW control in it. We played group games in college with standard decks before we got into edh and I remember drawing out my deck and shuffling it all back with elixir and 3 guys couldn't stop me from ultimate elspeth with bunch of tokens. The fact I got away with playing 2 Aetherling as my only creatures was hilarious to this day to me. Love UW Control

Great bit of history there. One note with the name of Weissman’s “The Deck”, Brian has said that when he started playtesting with a friend that they had a bunch of decks all named after themes. So they had “The Direct Damage Deck”, “The Weenie Deck, and “The Counterspell Deck”. Then they had one with 4x Library of Alexandria and 4x Mind Twist that was very good but they didn’t know what it’s theme was so it was called “The Deck”. Both Mind Twist and Library were later restricted, and eventually the 1x Amnesia replaced Mind Twist when the latter was banned in 1995.

This report needed Shawn "Hammer" Regnier's UW turbo millstone from the Ice Age Pro Tour. Howling Mines and Winter Orbs coupled with Icy Manipulators and the full suite of UW removal to run millstones to cap out the grind - imagine being afraid you were drawing too many cards and not being able to cast any of them? It ended up capitulating in the top 8 to a field brimming with Necropotence, but up until this point, it was the singular most unique deck besides Ernham-geddon.

The Deck around the 90's was the first iteration of azorius control without using azorius as a name. Bear in mind this is the 90's and the power leves were bonkers. Currently WU control is still a strong deck even with black creeping close with midrange.
