I know I’m late to the party but thank you for this awesome walk through! I know they released the pro model but I decided to buy the Edge for mine and my girlfriend’s helmet. This video helped me make the choice.

The connection problems you are having is because the bluetooth 2.1 on your goldwing transfers data to slowly(it's obsolete technology). The bluetooth in the new cardo is a little more than double the speed of the bt2.1, even with edr. Simplified, the pt edge is talking to fast for the goldwing's bt and it is unable to keep up. The only way you can really correct your issues would be to upgrade the goldwing's bluetooth to 5.0. Not sure if it is possible to do that.

Thank you kind sir. I didn't think about this, I haven't bought this yet however this was a point a forgot consider, so after reading this i went on google and checked the spec of my phone samsung s10e to see what Bluetooth ver. It had and luckily for me its 5.0. Had this not been the case it would've been a costly waste so thank you.

After having several sena’s , was sold on the Cardo edge at cycle gear. I have a 21 dct tour and after watching several videos I got the unit to pair in the right order. This corrected the low volume that I had with the Cardo and made the wheel work for volume control. Pairing the phone first and then the bike which is chosen with the wheel rotated backwards and the Cardo acknowledged that it was the bike pairing and not the phone. Very happy with the unit now. Hope this helps

Loved the review. I own an aging cardo Q3 multiset and want to replace them to get the voice command for controlling my Google assistant. I currently own a 2007 Goldwing but plan to someday buy a 2018+ version. I would love to see follow-up on this review if cardo responds or fixes the pairing issues and audio resumption issues with the GPS paired as 2nd device.

The good-Slim, magnetic attach, waterproof, sound quality. Otherwise not a winner for the chicken dinner. Too bad, I was hoping to buy this newest version. Sound is equally as good with the Black with the JBL partnership and it’s dial and buttons are easily accessed with gloves too. I want good solid pairing for both music and communication. I’m not getting into phone calls while riding the bike. Thanks Cruise. Appreciate.

For changing the audio volume I typically use voice control (Hay Cardo volume up (or down)) and it works.

Speaker positioning is critical to getting good sound quality and decent volume. I found it took a bit of experimentation to get the right position.

Cruiseman, my Sena SRL-Mesh surprised me today and I'm wondering if the Cardo unit might do the same. I had my headset and my wife's headset on and my iPhone plugged in before turning on the bike. There was a delay but the bike connected to the headsets and CarPlay started. In other words, just be patient and don't turn the headsets off and back on and see if they connect. Worth a try. I just tried this with my Sena 50S headsets with the same result. It takes about 10 seconds or more for the headsets to connect. Patience is the keyword.

My previous Packtalk Slim which I had for 2 yrs quit charging (bad usb port). I just installed the newest Cardo Edge and paired it to my 2019 Wing Tour and works and sounds much better than the Slim. The volume control on the Wing works fine and the sound will be blasting loud from my headset speakers if I past the halfway bar volume. Loving it !

I use a Sena 50S at the moment the only issue that bothers me When I'm riding sometimes the volume would go up by itself unexpectedly I thought it was my phone volume clicking but it wasn't Sound is not loud enough (I like loudness) I'm going to try the Packtalk Edge and hopefully I like it

Does the Sena have an auto volume adjust feature like the Cardo? Cardo will increase volume as the ambient noise gets louder in order to compensate for the increased noise floor.

Just bought the Edge and tied it to my brand new 2023 Wing. Paired myself and SWMBO, everything brilliant. My old Cardo Q2 is even older than the Bluetooth on the new Wing. seriously does anyone know if the pre 23 Wings have a different system in Bluetooth

I rarely have any issue pairing (getting the devices to recognize each other) or connecting (normal use after "pairing") either of my Sena or Cardo headsets to my Wing so I disagree with you about blaming the Wing for the connectivity issues. I found through "evaluation" that Cardo headsets in particular need to be very close (probably within 3 feet) of the bike's rider or passenger BT antenna during start up and connection phases.

Well I have had the same issue, but if you have to be within 3 feet of the GW then clearly there is an issue, since it is a Bluetooth device , SO YOU DO HAVE AN ISSUE !

@@66pheonixpatrick76 I didn't say I don't have an issue occasionally. I said "I don't think the issue is with the Wing"...which is what Chris stated. Looking holistically, every rider I know, there are a number of them, that has the J&M wired headset adapter never has a fail to connect. Not one, ever. They would have failures if the issue is with the Wing. The adapter is bluetooth connected to the bike. Most of the riders in my group that have BT headsets run Sena models. They (and me) rarely have fails to connect IF we stay somewhere near to the bike with nothing in the way of the line of sight (LOS) between the headset and the bike's rider BT antenna (left side)...that includes not turning our head so the headset to bike's antenna LOS isn't blocked by their head. We've actually evaluated this as a group. Same for the couple of folks who run J&M (they have even fewer connection failures than the folks with the Senas, extremely rare). The few Cardo users I ride with, including my when I use my pack talk black, have found we have to be within a couple of feet of of the bike, preferably in the saddle, and just like the Sena and J&M foks, we have to make sure there is nothing in the LOS between the headset and bike's BT antenna. This was also evaluated as a group. Therefore: that is the basis on why I think it is a combination of the headset manufacturer and that brands limitations combined with the distance and orientation of the helmet headset to the rider BT antenna. So, my evaluation, which is based on a much greater sample size than a single person with a single headset, and a single bike, is that whether headset connects to the bike or not all depends on what the rider is doing: how he/she keeps the headset oriented to the bike's rider BT antenna during start up and the particular brand's distance limitation..

I have same bike as you and I had some same problems as you did connecting to the bike. Also, while connected to Apple CarPlay , during a phone call, the person on the other end can’t understand me. I went back to pack talk black with no issues.

I have the Sena that is made for my HJC helmet. I haven’t had much of an issue connecting to my 21 Goldwing but I do have an issue with the sound quality and I find the microphone useless. I remember when the Sony Walkman first came out and those tiny speakers were amazing for 1980 technology. It can’t be that hard or expensive to make a quality helmet speaker in 2022. As for the microphone just today I asked it to “ end route “ because weather was happening ahead. The first try Siri started playing Joni Michell music. Second try it started reading from a list I had in my notes. The final try it called my financial advisor. I’d be pissed but it really makes me laugh. I do a lot of long trips on my beautiful bike and enjoy “iron butting” a couple hundred miles from time to time and it would be nice not to have to pull the bike over to change the music, call my wife or maybe find a restaurant. All things my phone is capable of if it could only understand me. Anyway thanks a lot for the videos. I love the free ones and the ones I paid for have paid for themselves many times over!!!

Chris, I am looking to order the Edge. I own 2020 GW. What will be the best way to connect the Edge to the GW and Iphone. I don't use external GPS, however I use Carplay all the time.

Would like if you could try controlling Google assistant on Android with voice commands using the cardo headset. Like "ok Google... Navigate to einsteins bagels" and "ok Google... 230 divided by 5.82". I want to know how often it works without tapping anything on the phone. It's one big reason I want to upgrade from my older cardo Q3 but I would love to hear your review on that functionality to know if it works like advertised or mostly doesn't.

Hey cruiseman, I know you have previued cardo & sena, but do you have any knowledge about J&M headsets? I'm having trouble dialing out & receiving phone calls! The connection is made, I can hear the other party talk, but they can't hear me! It does the same thing when I call first, or the other party calls me first!? It was working fine last year on my 5800 mile trip, help!

To be fair, the cardo has a third channel specifically for GPS. You push and hold the phone pairing button down to get it into phone pairing mode, and then you push the volume up and then you will get "GPS pairing mode" perhaps that will work better…

how to sound when compared to Packtalk Black and Edge/NEO is it the same?. Because the speaker is Black 45mm while the Edge/Neo is 40mm. I'm confused about choosing Packtalk Black or Edge

Hey Cruiseman, You seem to know a lot about this subject. Can you hook to a Motorcycle, Phone and GPS at the same time? Because it seems like you can plug the Phone in with a wire and then use one channel for the motorcycle and the other for the GPS. It seems to get a little complicated if you try to do too much!

Been trying get cardo tech support to answer why volume wheel won’t work as it did with Bold models as you noted. Keep telling me to use Goldwing to control volume ugh. Also have reconnect twice as you mentioned in video. Thought latest update would solve but no.

Thorough review, but might as well rename the title to- review of cardo edge with the 2018 goldwing specifically. That’s a pretty unique use case, but I suspect many people will pair it with a phone which wasn’t tested here.

Friend, Just one thing about the DUO pack; They connect to each other right out of the box. Also, the cardo sound I feel is vastly superior to the Sena 30k's which is what I came from.

Volume wheel does not work on either of our Cardo units. Tape for mount failed after 2 weeks (no rides in the rain). Pairing with intercom is a miserable experience, and even once paired, the delay and clipping is almost utterly intolerable. We have never been able to add users to the group who have Sena units. I think the intercom market is just a hot mess as a whole at the moment. We moved away from Sena units as the Sena Desktop Utility app never would find the unit (the working solution to that is to download Harley-Davidson's version of the same app which performs flawlessly for updating the firmware on those Sena units). I find myself now looking for some better alternatives.

Now I think I am a bit confused - seems my Cardo Packtalk Bold uses Bluetooth not just to connect to my iPhone but also to connect to other Cardo users...I say this because when I ride with friends and two of them talk to me then one disconnects, the Cardo voice says "phone connected" or something like that, as if it disconnected itself from the phone's Bluetooth connection in order to reconnect to the phone. I still like it better than my Sena 30K, as that unit has gotten into the habit of randomly cutting me off from whoever I am speaking with to ask "say a command" - and until I say "cancel!" it keeps me disconnected. But what bugs is that this happens at random times, not correlated to anything I do (I do not touch the unit, turn my head, or do anything physical and somehow the Sena just ups and decides to be a PITA) Hearing what you say at the end of this review, I guess I will stick with the Bold and hope that some future model is less finicky.

Once in pairing mode, turn the wheel / dial backwards. It will pair the goldwing as a bike or TFT. Manual could do a better job at describing that. I haven't had any issues with my packtalk edge and my 2018 goldwing tour once I set it up this way. I pair my phone to the goldwing only. Not to the cardo. Let the goldwing handle all the transitions.

Are you able to connecting both to the phone and bike? When I connect the Edge to the bike as an bike it loosing the phone pairing. And then it’s not possible to use the app.

@@tonybavaro7379 I have done that to, but then it’s not possible to use the app on the phone. I have to pair with phone if I have to change the settings on edge or use DMC. And then I must pair back to the bike again. I use iPhone.

Tony, I own 2020 GW. Looking to order the Edge. Is this set up still works well? No issues connecting to the bike? I use Apple Carplay all the time. When you use Apple carplay, the BT on the Iphone must be off, if you want to have the headset paired to the bike. You will create a conflict. Second, you use TFT connection to the bike and first channel for the Iphone to use the Edge App, if needed for firmware? I will not use the app for anything else. The Edge will be used for calls and Amazon Music only.

When pairing to the bike, you should have rolled the wheel back on the Cardo. The cardo will announce pairing to bike if you do that. I don’t know if that makes a big difference but it is certainly worth a try. When dealing with the volume, they will blow my ears out! I can not turn the volume to high without blowing my ears out. I would highly recommend you un pair everything and try again. Impaired my phone first. Then the bike.

Any idea why connecting Cardo edge to Goldwing requires cycling Cardo on and off several times? Wonder if there is a firmware update for Honda or Cardo. It truly is awful trying to pair with the GW.

Just a guess, but Cardo probably is using a newer version of Bluetooth than Honda.

I think most of your issues are Goldwing related, I have it paired to a BMW with no issues, however initially it didn't work as well with others in the group still using Packtalk Bold but there is a firmware update which has fixed this issue. If it's a first purchase I would say it's an improvement on the Packtalk Bold especially the voice commands and ease of mounting but I don't think it worth spending the money to upgrade from the PT Bold as its not that much better.

I agree. The Goldwing has such an old, outdated version of Bluetooth that these newer devices seem to struggle with backward compatibility.

Connect ya phone to the app . Then connect your edge to ya phone then you will find the volume will be louder

I have the edge for my 2018 dct Goldwing. I really have never been happy with the unit. The volume does not go that high. And if I ever can get the volume up it never stays up. It also keeps dropping the music from my Samsung phone. I have been in touch with support. They are willing to exchange it. I just need to send it back. I will do that soon I just got back from riding the dragon and foothills parkway. I wanted it for that 4 day ride as it is better then nothing. The music kept cutting out from my phone and ended up using the radio most of the time. But there were not many or could not get signal in the mountains. I am not happy with this unit.

We’re you able to pair the bike separate of your phone? After I had the same issues with Cardo I found out that I had paired the bike as if it was a phone and that was causing the issues.

Do not use the goldwing as a center, use the phone and the app an then connect the phone to the bike

A few constructive criticisms. Much of your review talks about your issues connecting to your older Bluetooth of the Goldwing and a two year old GPS. Of course I’m sure Cardo wants to be able to connect to these kinds of devices and the fact you cannot easily is a concern, but you completely ignore the main selling point of why I think most people would buy this model. It is for the mesh pairing capability. Once you put this into plain old Bluetooth mode you eliminate the main benefit of this model. I came here to see how well this Edge does with hopping between other mesh riders, particularly how well it heals the connection when separated from the group. I do not have this yet but that is the thing I’m interested in most with the Edge, and I would bet it is for many people. As a note, I’ve seen that you also lose mesh capability once you decide to go into normal Bluetooth mode to pair with a non-mesh Bluetooth headset. So to summarize, I think you are spending a lot of time on specific examples, such as your particular bike and gps, and how it fits into your trunk. I know that is your particular situation, but it limits the value of this video for many people. Also, to say something is IPX rated is not really saying anything. IPX is a rating system. A device can be on the IPX rating system at 00 and basically offer no protection from dust or water. I haven’t seen what the Edge has, but I’m guessing IP66, hopefully 67. But I do like to see that you’ve actually cut out holes for your speakers. I’m a big guy and even if I remove the cheek pads I’m filling out my helmet. I have an FXR helmet that for some reason was not equipped well for a speaker system. It is not easy to attach a mount and there are no speaker recesses. It is carbon fiber so it was relatively expensive so I’ve been hesitant to cut into it, but after seeing this I’m now considering it. It is interesting to hear your range report. I’ve seen similar reports from other reviews. That is a bit of a concern because we plan to use these atv’ing, so it seems it may be easy to lose your team around wooded corners. That is why the mesh healing is important to me. Thanks for the review!
