C.A.R.D.S. RPG: The Misty Battlefield sets the field for what you'd expect to be an epic SRPG adventure but really stumbles on execution. Similar to the team's previous self-published titles, the experience comes across as if those working on this game are attempting to develop within genres and gameplay systems that they aren't well-versed in. The result is a surface-level SRPG experience with a rather dull deck-building mechanic all tied together with the expectations of upgrading your units through repetitive fights under the guise of being a roguelike. It's playable and visually striking, but very little will keep you invested.

Every SRPG makes me wish Jeanne D’arc got a remaster. It is my favourite SRPG game more so than FF Tactics yet it is stuck on PSP and never even supplying the Vita and no one seems to talk about it.

4:12 so the reason it might have discard cards is for 2 reasons 1) This can make the deck stronger because you can remove bad cards 2) This adds time pressure or encourages variety in exchange for not losing cards, but still a guess on my part

I think the fact that each character doesn't have their own deck really hurts my interest in this game. Also it's surprisingly expensive for this genre.

Hm ill have to try that equipment thing. I always equip the items since its better than not having anything equip. It just lame you can only switch equipment during the hub part before you start a mission than like in fire emblem were you can go next to a unit&trade. I kind of like the single deck since you dont have to worry to much and you can just delete the weaker cards. I do hope in the full game the skill tree is bigger and maybe more characters. The equipment seems to be the effective way to keep stats up high. I kind of like the leveling up during a match its kind of fun. This and capes are games i been interested in this month.

I liked the demo. But I understand the repeativeness. They should add 1 or 2 unique class cards that only add in when using the class if it is a joined pool of cards. ( like the poison or paralysis range card, it is powerful so could be adjusted instead of just being dead cards.) They also never explained about range card pool only include attack cards so I had to figure out this by myself.

personally, i enjoyed the demo and the systems alot. enjoyed it enough to play the demo multiple times. however, for the price tag, the lack of polish makes it seem not worth it. if they dropped the price or if there's a sale, this is something i'd still pick up.

Thanks for this. I played the demo on Switch and the concept is brilliant, basically Fire Emblem meets Slay the Spire, but it definitely left me with some doubts about the overall quality. I didn't know if these would be addressed in the full release, but it doesn't look like they were :( I'm sure I'll pick it up some time, but it'll need to be on a pretty decent sale, £35 seems far too high!

How far did you get? I was hoping to see some gameplay beyond the first three fights that I encountered in the demo, but did not. Game is okay, but I feel like it does not respect your time. It's so fricken slow. How does dying and restarting go? The discard system makes sense to me when levels are strung together, but what happens if you die? Does your deck revert back to what it was before the fight or does it start out completely fresh? For example, against the troll I could see myself picking some anti-poison cards but tossing them for later levels. The discard system forces you to keep thinning your deck to tailor make it for the next fight.

I agree this feels like somethin that was a low effort push to hit a trend and priced to try and drive hype to it...they are really trying to push this game but unless they rebuild and rework some things I don't see this as more than just a $5-$15 game tops.

That sucks, I was looking forward to this. But here’s the thing, this game is being sold for 40 dollars. That’s a lot for what’s offered, I’m sticking to balatro for my deckbuilding stuff. Bought animal well instead.

Thanks for the review. Played the demo and needed a second opinion being it seemed shallow, especially for the price tag. Hard pass on this one.

i enjoyed as well. i think the issue is simply the price given the lack of polish. imo this will be worth it on a sale as i absolutely enjoyed the demo enough to play it multiple times.

I tried the demo and honestly the text on the cards is just unreadable unless u are docked and there is no tutorial nothing... no story whatsoever in the demo u just find urself in battle and u don't know how it works at all... I was about to import this but... ehm... no thanks
