Thanks for this! I have one pair of wood plugs not in my current size but never wore it because I felt like it was sticking to my ear. I used to live in a very dry climate, did not know you had to oil the jewelry before wear.

God yes they basically do stick to your ear without some oil!!!! I do wish more makers were more open about care needs cause I feel like a lot just sell wood and assume clients know how to care for it? And that’s just not the case.

What about shell? Like abalone and mother of pearl. I have hangers with 1 or both of these materials, and while I assume they can't be exposed to alcohol (like perfume), I'm unsure if they require any additional care. TIA 😁

i was only curious if i had to clean them first! i got some wood plugs from body art forms and i usually sanitize my plugs (glass) from there but i knew not to submerge the wood ones in any water... si can i just go straight to oiling?

Yep! Give them a good first coat of oil. As long as they are from a reputable maker that’s all you need.

I have another question. Does oiling the plugs and oiling your ears each time to put the plugs in, make wood plugs swell at all?. I know you oil them every once in awhile to keep the plugs hydrated. But each time I put my plugs in after a shower, I oil my ears up abit first, so would that cause the wood to swell?

No, not if you are correctly oiling them. It’s generally water that makes them swell

Can you use Bio Oil to clean wood plugs?

You can but I have definitely seen it cause some discoloration and it had a bunch of different additives so I would do so with caution. No promises on how it will effect your plugs!
