Very helpful thank you and probably covers the majority of cases where someone requires care. My situation is slightly different in that the 'loved one' has sold their home and lives with another family member (in their home).

Thank you for your kind comment. I agree it will be somewhat different however any capital remaining from the sale of the house will be factored into the calculation for "care at home" which if it is over £23,500 will make them a self funder and that either the loved one or those supporting them will have to source the care provider themselves.

Hi Stu. A lot of help here in everything you said thank you. Could I please ask a question. You spoke of how the house was not in the assessment as it was owned jointly between husband and wife. I completely get this part. I’m 65 and gave up my work and a lot more to care for my elderly mother. We have lived together for all my life. Is there an exemption for a relative over 60? It’s something I have been told. If this is correct, is it a total exemption or just deferred? Your videos are so helpful please keep up the good work

Hi Karl. Children living in the property are not considered, so if your mum was to move into permanent residential care and you are over 18, you would be expected to move out and the property be sold to pay for her care. If that situation occurs, you might be able to be considered as "homeless" and get support from your local authority to move into social housing, but there are slim pickings for healthy single men under 55 in social housing. If you are over 55 and/or disabled you may have more chance. Otherwise, you would need to find a private rental.

Hi Stuart. Thank you so much for your videos. One piece of information I'm struggling to find the answer to is where you have husband/wife but the house is in one name. My parents have been married 51 years, and I (their son) is having to complete a financial assessment. I'm worried that because the house in my Dad's name, the literal interpretation will be actioned by the authority. Would be great if you could provide a video/insight into this.

It depends a little on how the financial assessment team at your local authority works, but essentially they can only assess available assets, so if the assessment is for mum then that is an asset that is not available to her so it would not be factored in to calculations. On the other hand if the assessment is for dad then, rather than turfing your mum out to sell the house to pay for his care, they would more likely seek to put a "deferred payment" in against the property. This would remain in place until your mum was in need to move herself and then the deferred payment would be recouped against the value of the property at sale.
