me too, I'm 14 and this is DEFINITELY what I want to do when I get older.

My father works in the medical field, which makes me want to have some sort of profession falling under those lines. Anesthetist just seems to fit what I would enjoy doing.

In the US you can become a nurse practitioner which basically gives you all the power of a physician without having to go to medical school. These jobs are becoming common because in the US we have a shortage of healthcare providers. Medical school has become so expensive that its scaring people away from attending, nurses are taking on more jobs and responsibilities that were once done by physicians

If you want to do what is anesthesiologist doing, you must finish medical school. It is the most responsible job. You must know very well anatomy, pathophysiology, pharmacology, neurology,...

But also add in the fact that it takes MUCH longer so why not just take the route that's more affordable and takes less time? You don't wanna spend your young years in school.

Y v That's what I thought about long and hard. For me, I don't want to be in school for the next 12+ years continuously and sacrificing a lot of family time. This fall, I've finally decided on a profession and starting as a Pre-nursing student soon! Can't wait to work as an OR nurse then venture off into CRNA (my school offers a good rigorous program that is only a year)

Freddy Medina ya I was considering this field at first because of the money. I'm in a nursing program to become an lvn. However, after almost a year in this program, I can say nursing is not the field for me. My dream job is actually to be a vet. I do plan on finishing this program. But I will go no further than that. Vet usually make around 70-90 thousand a year. That's half of what a crna makes but it's still pretty good money. Especially if you live in Texas because Texas is one of the cheaper states and I'm not looking for a mansion. Just a good house and a job that love so much, I don't even consider it a job. I'd gladly work all day as a vet. Also I plan to have roommates so that's less cost for me. And of course I plan to have a good partner and no kids for while.

All colleges that have a program for this require a bachelors degree in nursing. After that you apply to a program and go for about two years. You could also be an anesthesiologist assistant, they get paid less than CRNA but they require a bachelors in biology then you apply to an AA program.

Research the bullying first. Google "nurses eat their young". That is the real cause of the nursing shortage. Good luck!

+liz morales It all depends on the hospital and years of experience. Im sure seniority has something to do with hours. Most hospitals require everyone to have shared on call duties.

It depends where you work. A surgery center usually doesn't have any call or overtime. There's an agency, too. They never had to take call. Some L&D floors have a CRNA in house 24-7. A CRNA stays in house for 48 hours and that's it for the week. So, there's all types of schedules.

Well first of all, u gotta know education in the US is expensive, very expensive, especially when u decide to pursue a masters degree, unless you manage to secure some type of scholarship that would cover most if not all of your tuition. Get your RN license first and work in ICU setting for at least 2yrs. Then apply to the program

1.5 to 2 yrs of ICU experience first, then apply to CRNA school

Three years, and it's my understanding that people often go for 2 years of ICU experience before applying/acceptance.

jed52 Definitely not. If you casually browse some forums of students accepted and graduating from CRNA school, there are a lot of people with a TON (10-20 years) of experience. Go for it, if that's what you want to do!

+jed52 Age shouldn't matter if it's your passion and what you want to do. I started nursing school at 27 and I'm starting nurse anesthesia school in September and I am 36 right now. A lot of people say that's old to go back to school for 3 years because I will be 40 a month after I graduate. But I can't see myself doing anything else in this world so to me age doesn't matter. It shouldn't.
