Well this ship hit the bridge right in the support that holds up the entire bridge. What I didn't expect is to see ships this large moving near a bridge with no tug escorts. The Ship lost power and was drifting. Someone on board thought it was a smart idea to drop the port anchor which only steered the ship at the pillion. Had they not dropped the anchor they would have been able to steer.

As we can clearly see from the video, MV Dali lost power at 01:24:32 EST. Watch all the lights go out. The engine probably stopped and she lost steering control. According to its GPS track MV Dali was sailing perfectly up the exit channel at 8.5 knots up until that happened. After losing power MV Dali drifted out of her lane to the right and started to slow a bit - another solid indicator she lost power. The GPS track clearly shows all of this. Still, 116,000 tons drifting out of control at over 8 knots. Stopping distance is measured in miles. Power was regained (lights come back on) at 01:25:31 (no power for a full minute). The stack starts billowing thick black smoke at 01:25:43. I suspect they got the engine back on line and threw it into full reverse but none of this is going to help with steering control. Reversing causes the ship to shimmy, cavitation from the single prop and the loss of speed reduce rudder effectiveness - and these things don't exactly turn on a dime anyway. The GPS track shows the ship well out of its lane and slowing further. The ship drops the port anchor to try and slow down further but it’s too late. She hits the piling at 01:28:45 at about 1.5 knots. That might seem slow but 116,000 tons at 1.5 knots is a LOT of energy. At some point during all of this MV Dali radioed it was in trouble and the Governor reports they were able to stop traffic getting onto the bridge before the impact.

This happened on a 170 ft ship I was on. Engine stopped and lights went out. The engine had run out of fuel. Fuel comes from a day tank that gravity feeds the engines. Engineer had forgotten to fill the day tank. It took about half an hour to fix the problem. I expect something similar happened on the container ship.

I don't think any Bridge could survive an impact like that. Most bridges that were built in those days are now considered by inspectors to be "structurally unsound". Still, seeing this reminds me of a fella who showed me photos of the Skyway Bridge Disaster in Tampa, Florida in 1980. His brother was one of the survivors of that tragic day. At the time, the bridge was practically new but still collapsed under those circumstances after a tanker hit it. Still, my prayers go to Baltimore who are in the midst of this tragedy.

That level of collapse, seems to indicate a serious flaw design. But how old is that bridge? engineering has improved I hope. We had a horrific bridge collapse here in Oklahoma from a pillar being hit by a tug but it only took out one section. All of these bridges that are subject to ships going through should have abutments that protect the infrastructure which is what they did when they rebuilt our Bridge

If you have ever crossed this bridge, especially at night, you will know there is tons of lights and path indicators in the water. Ships go under this bridge a lot. This seems like a lack of paying attention or intentional. The boat turns immediately to the right then collides 🤔

No protection for the supports, no tugs to guide the ship under the bridge. WTF is going on over there? Looked like a huge safety risk that nobody was concerned with? The first middle section collapsed when the first support was compromised. The other middle section simply teeter tottered back and collapsed right after. What a terrible design.

It seems to me that this would never have escalated if the pier had been protected by a substantial island to deflect the ship's hull from contacting the pier. Do they never use tugs these days to assist the manoeuvring of large vessel through tight spots? Down to money as per usual, I suppose??

Its a cantilever design. The weight on one side of the pillar balances the weight on the other side of the pillar, which minimizes the number of pillars and makes a bigger opening for ships to go through. The downside is the pillars are more critical and if the weight on one side disappears, the other side falls down too. Like one person jumping off a teeter-totter.
