Since the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed Tuesday after a column was hit by a large container ship, search and rescue operations have been in full swing. Former NTSB chief Robert Sumwalt and former assistant secretary in the Department of Homeland Security Samantha Vinograd join “CBS Mornings” to discuss the possible implications of the collapse.

@@grosario45 It hit a support structure and without that support structure it's going to fall like dominoes. If the bridge could be supported with only one support structure, then that's all they would have built. You'd never make an engineer. You'd fail the prerequisites to the beginning classes.

@@mistamajorThey lost control of a mechanically compromised ship and they sent out Maydays which helped stop regular traffic on the bridge! Sadly the work crew were sitting ducks, I wonder if any horn blasts were sounded from the ship….it might have helped given a few minutes extra warning? So sad for all the victims🥺

Why would the electric system be tied to the main engines? I worked supply boats in the gulf, way smaller than this thing, and we had a dedicated power system.

A tugboat or two might have prevented the collision. They should be required for any ship that has to navigate under a bridge that close to the port.

The tugs took the ship out to the main channel and then left the ship at the appropriate point where the Bay Pilot took over. I’ve been with SAR in the Rocky Mountains (Canada & the States) for decades. Cold water rescue victims can survive longer than might be thought. Don’t sound so eager to call it too soon.

I witnessed a 12 year old girl just pop back to life, without any complications, after being found at the bottom of a pool. Warm water, no diving reflex here. More than FORTY MINUTES of futile efforts. By God, her pupils were blown. Brainstem death to me. I brought the grieving mom in to hold her for the last time and she was sitting up, calling for mom and fundamentally freaked out our entire crew. Esp when visiting a week later with NO lingering effects. Olathe Medical Center ER, Olathe, Kansas. Circa 1988. That must have been other forces at work as never saw anything that dramatic in 20 years of acute care in ERs, Trauma Centers and as a street EMT. Prob shouldn't have thrown that in there but was sort of relevant except HARDLY the typical. Meant to mention my having to go onto a frozen pond to get 2 dogs that crashed through. I bet all on that 7 minutes. I crashed through beforehand per expected, down to bottom about 10 feet down so able to push up but holy hell, once head out of water, my brain was shutting down. Hard to think. Actually a second of confusion wondering what the hell I was doing. Dogs got grabbed out okay (how is a mystery as I had to try to hold on a crumbling ice edge, reach over and physically lift them out of their holes. and I ain't that buff). My yammer POINT was that by ?4-5 minutes? if that?, I was struggling to THINK and a definite struggle to make my limbs work. Steep bank had me in thigh-high water quickly but I bet if it was 30 seconds more, I would not have been able to stumble out. Sorry for yammer trigger. Keep up the good work. And key point about cold water survival. You Never Know. And holy hell, I think you'd appreciate The Last Breath. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! I avoided it for a long time; seemed too much a bummer but absolutely fantastic and a must for any first responders (in my opinion). Cheers.

Indeed but one can agree the bridge is poorly constructed to withstand such a collission. Those pilons should have had decent concrete bunkers around it to prevent a ship hitting them.

This should not have happened. An adequate design that considered the risk of bridge strikes would have included risk mitigation measures like concrete piers with bumpers and non-trussed spans. Had the spans been something other than steel they might have withstood the strike enough for traiffic to clear the bridge and close it and had the spans not been trussed it is likely only two spans would have failed instead of the entire structure.

They believe their viewing audience is incapable of understanding anything without an ‘EXPERT’ spraining it to them. The EXPERT doesn’t even have to be correct. But as long as they believe the expert is a true expert the viewers believe whatever the expert tells them. If an ‘EXPERT’ told them it collapsed because the piling was in need of repair, that’s what some people will believe until their dying day. I learned this lesson a decade ago. I don’t watch cable news or read major media outlet news. They don’t tell you what you NEED to know. They tell you what they WANT you to believe.

But yeah, I thought all big bridges had those bumpers ... but a joke compared to the inertia of a near-thousand foot giant cargo ship loaded a hundred feet above the gunwales. Ship obviously lost power and drifted into the bridge support, collapsing the bridge. Watch the video before yapping endlessly about something you know nothing about. First, all the lights go off, then when they come back on, you clearly see two things, first black smoke from the stack, and the sudden veering of the ship out of the channel indicating the port side anchor was dropped.

I think it was similar circumstances when a ship hit another bridge in the South somewhere, sometime in the past (yeah, great ref I know). Just too much went wrong at the worst time. Then again with your point of the timing, that's EXACTLY what tingled my Spidey Sense.

They are cargo ships. They are going to be overloaded. that bridge was lacking maintance. Bridges are not supposed to collapse over a cargo ship. They have to be able to be built to be able to maintain all sorts of impacts.....specially because they have traffic, elements, waters to deal with everyday

They needed to have protection barriers in front of the support structures. We have them in our area for our interstate bridges since we have barges going up and down the rivers. A barge took out I-40 bridge in Webbers Fall in 2002. Since this is major port why were there not any barriers in place.

They probably were in place (I have no idea but assume so). However, the inertia in such a massive moving object likely powdered 'em on impact. Not designed to sustain a direct hit of such a huge moving mass else they'd be a third the size of the bridge (I assume). Perhaps they WILL start making them bigger now.

I was eating at riverwalk in new orleans when this same thing happened. A large boat lost power there was 2 minute warning. When it hit water flooded the shopping mall.. we ran for our lives..

I am not an expert, but I am a Navy Veteran who know how ships move. There was some sort of engineering casualty. Power out. Power on, black smoke, ship veers to its starboard. Power out, power on, ship hits bridge with 180k tons behind it. Why? Accident? Cyber attack? Sabotage? Aliens? Whatever the reason, it is too early to know, if we ever really know. The outcome. Some people died. The Port of Baltimore is closed until further notice. Commercial shipping and cruise ships are taking a big hit. Possible price increases due to loss of the Port.

One reason why huge container ships like Dali are so economical to operate is that they are powered by a single, massive engine. Lose that engine and the ship loses the ability to navigate. New bridges are expensive. Perhaps it is time to mandate that similar ships must be escorted by two tugs when passing under vulnerable infrastructure.

From the video clip, the ship-Dali was on the correct voyage route of passing the bridge before it lost power. If the ship pilot just do nothing, the ship should be able to pass the bridge safely through gravity force. Unfortunately, the pilot tries to stop the ship by dropping the ankle and reversing gear, which caused the ship deviation from the correct route.

Based on the raw information, the vessel lost power twice. However, the main reason was the wrong decision made by the pilot and master. When the first engine broke down, the vessel still had time to avoid the situation by using steering. However, in the video, the pilot decided to go astern, which caused the vessel to lose control. As a result, it collided with the bridge.

The bridge was old. A modern bridge would have at moat collapsed around the pillar and not such a long stretch. Modern bridges can withstand the failure of one column/pillar

Extremely shocking to see the collision of the container ship with the bridge. Our prayers are with families and friends those who are still missing from this tragic accident. Its too late to ask this question but from my sailing experience onboard ships we use tug boats when we are passing high risk areas for safety of all. We do that in Suez channel entry exit and in Panama as well. If they had tug boats in this channel to safeguard the bridge and the vessel passing under bridge when passing such very high risk areas they would have had hope to pull the ship to the channel back during its sudden black out which is my opinion if you all can do this for other channels such as exmp. Missisipi river any river commercial ships passing we could minimise such catastrophic accidents for future. If you think vessels must be guided by tug boats when passing such a bridge in any river etc for safety all mankind thank you.

I am an EXPERT at watching the video of that cargo ship hitting a bridge support pylon causing three sections to fall off into the water. It is obvious what happened. Looked like the ship was having problems of some kind. But looking at the smoke stack, it was under power the whole time.

It looks like they meant to put why it collapsed totally and not near the support, and the simple answer is the design of the bridge, it relies on the supports to “balance” over the channel, you take out one of those supports and you lose that balance, and then gravity takes over

That bridge fell like it was made of match sticks in the video...very concerning... unfortunately, sometimes crap just hits the absolute fan and the pilot may have done everything right and those technology issues of the lights going out are suspicious. Someone is in trouble no doubt, we'll see with the investigation.

🤦‍♂️ A MASSIVE cargo ship ran into one of the main supports for that bridge, so it’s no surprise the bridge went down the way it did. That’s a lot of kinetic energy that NO bridge would be able to withstand especially a ship that size going the speed it was. Imagine a train 🚂 crashing into your house and your house collapsing like a house of cards afterwards only for you to say, “iT’s cOncERniG tHe wAy mY hOuSe cOLLapSed 🥴”. It’s literally simple physics. The bridge did exactly what it was supposed to do on a physical scale, but unfortunately it was not able to withstand that kind of force from a ship that size. NO bridge can!

Focus in saving lives! These was a massive power failure, the anchor dragged and the bearings in the pylon were not sufficient. Why don't you interview Sam at "What's going on with Shipping"? Talking heads do not enlighten of save lives. Infrastructure/safety chack fail!

F me your manufacturing standards are in the bin, Boeing now whoever built the bridge, here in the UK the concrete plinths are big enough to keep ships away from the bridge structurr

Take a look at the "dolphins" Florida put in place to protect the new bridge after the Sunshine Skyway Bridge disaster in 1980 - that was another incident where a ship lost control and collided with the bridge support structure.

Amm no. Its a bridge of fuks sake. They are meant to tolerate this sort of impact. the bridge was not well maintain. I expect lawsuits and I hope they paid out like they should.

Experts!? Real heavy Boat lost power. Puny Bridge has no pillars. Heavy boat, hit bridge. Gravity made Bridge go falling down, falling down, falling down
