On the bed with the mattress, all you need to do for support on the wall side of the bed is to screw a cleat (2”x2”x5' for example) on the wall, where the bed lands when down. Great idea for some lightweight beds.👍

Very nice👍 Thinking of doing similar You have a 6' wide trailer -- how wide did you make the beds with 8" between. I was thinking recess the legs and have them come down from the width -- the recess will allow for a little more room not to stub the toes going pee in the wee hrs of the night. All the best to you and yours

Great build, just bought a 6x12 all aluminum trailer myself and want to keep this build as light as possible. I have a midsize pick up and don't wanna overload it. Do you think this would be possible to set up as bunk beds? Not sure how the top bunk would work, any recommendations? Thanks man.
@northwoodsengineered
@northwoodsengineered Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I definitely think its doable to do a bunk bed, but it would be harder if you are still trying to fold them. But if not folding, then i would make the top bunk pretty strong so there is no change of it breaking, as that would be a rude awakening for the bottom bunk sleeper. I would probably put a horizontal 2x4 along the wall screwed into multiple studs, to support the bed on that side, then have 2x4 legs go all the way down to the floor. Or use aluminum tube in a similar way if you want to be lighter. If you want both beds to be foldable, it gets tougher for the top bunk. You could probably make it very similar to the lower bunk, but the legs rest on the lower bunk rather than the floor, and i would put something so they cant slip out. But if you make 3 legs, its harder for the bottom person to get into their bed.

How are those hinges offset like that working out since they are not designed for forces applied like that?

Hey, so I actually changed from what I showed with the offset hinges, and I wanted the bed to fold flat like the other side. So I didn’t really use the bed more than a couple times with that design.

nice and light weight ...did you get the foam at Amazon? Is it comfortable by itself? Approx how much for the Alum. tubing ? Thanks
@northwoodsengineered
@northwoodsengineered 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Vicki, yes i got the foam on amazon. Its pretty comfy but still a little thin on its own, we put another blanket underneath to not feel the wood so much. The aluminum was probably about $100 but that was 2 years ago so its probably a bit more expensive right now.

Hey. If i recall in the video you say you got the mattress off amazon and cut it in half. Where did you get the mattress cover, or is it just a sheet? I cant find smaller covers. Love the design, i have been debating on doing something similar, but welding/designing it to fold was holding me up. You mentioned snowmobiling. Do the matresses smell from the sleds exhaust? Or do you take them out?
@northwoodsengineered
@northwoodsengineered 11 ай бұрын
Thanks! The mattress cover came with the mattress and I cut that in half too. It’s not ideal because one side of each cover section is just open, but it works ok. I always take the mattresses out in the winter time cause we don’t use it for a camper that time of the year. Otherwise yes, they would definitely smell like a snowmobile.
