In this CarGurus UK video, Vicky Parrott compares two impressive electric vehicles: the new MG5 and a used Skoda Enyaq. With similar prices but some key differences to consider, it's a very close battle.
Following a recent heavy facelift, the MG5 tested is equipped with a 57.4kWh battery, resulting in a WLTP electric driving range of 235 miles. The used Skoda Enyaq IV 60 tested features a 58kWh battery and a WLTP electric driving range of 256 miles, providing a competitive edge in terms of range. Moreover, with just under 13,000 miles on the clock, this particular Enyaq is a tempting choice for those seeking an almost-new EV for a discounted price.
As far as practicality goes, the Skoda Enyaq takes the crown with its 585-litre boot offering ample space for families and weekend getaways. The roomy back seats also provide generous leg and headroom. The MG5, although smaller in official boot capacity at 479 litres, is still a useful size, and its estate car design makes the boot very easy to load.
So what do you do if you're looking for a family EV for around £30,000? Both the MG5 and the Skoda Enyaq have their distinct advantages, but Vicky believes there's still a worthy winner.
With thanks to EV Experts for the loan of the Skoda Enyaq. Check out their full stock here: www.evexperts.co.uk/

I bought a used 1st Edition ID.3 with less than 12,000 miles for less than the price of the cheapest new MG4. The only real problem has been the piece of human excrement who smashed the drivers door window whilst it was parked up last week. 🙁 Try getting replacement glass. I've had to buy from a dismantler and will be fitting it this coming weekend.

A very interesting comparison Vicky. A new v used car. I've not driven either but I have sat in a few Enyaq models. Given that there is a lot more data available on the Enyaq being the older car this should be taken into account for an informed view. The VW group infotainment is a bit hit and miss to say the least and not just on the EV models, hopefully VW will feed the SW engineers some clever morsels and they can fix it at some point. One thing that is worth considering is what the retail price was at the point of first sale for the Skoda, if it was greater than that magic £40K then there is that extra burden of a significant road tax hike for the first 5 years regardless if you got it used. That threshold is based on the RRP including any factory fit options at point of initial sale. This possibly plays into the MG cars favour. Many thanks for sharing.

We've had a used MG ZS EV for 6 months. It's been OK - almost a great car, but enough annoying flaws to matter. Definitely a head-over-heart buying decision. Has plenty of power but prone to spinning front wheels in damp conditions, even with high end all-season tyres. Similar story in the MG5 I had a test drive in at Fully Charged Live. Good review. EVs are definitely improving, but still just that niggly bit less ability than ICE cars, and at a premium cost too. In my view I'll hold onto my PHEV a couple more years before making the leap to fully electric. Too many question marks over depreciation, and compromises on range, versus inadequate charging infrastructure. Latest battery tech (from CATL) going into 2024 Teslas is quite a leap forward too, worth waiting for!

I can't see that £400 to £500 is OK / affordable..... especially on PCP meaning it is not yours!! I would strongly suggest looking at LEASING. Both of these have dodgy infotainment. VW have plenty of stock, so leasing a brand new Skoda could even work out cheaper...!!

Why are you not comparing like for like, used MG vs used Skoda. Not wothstanding this, unless I missed it, noention that the MG has a 7yr 80k mile warranty vs the Skodas 3yr 60k mile warranty which wont even be that long when purchasing used.

Personally dont think theres such thing as a used EV bargain. Depreciation on these things is completely unquantifiable. Buy a 1 year old Tesla M3 now for c.20k, sure its 50% off, but what on earth will it be worth at 3 years old. Biggest problem with these at the moment is the ability to get them fixed outside of a main dealer network, that community is building slowly but its a long way off where it needs to be for most to take on ownership of an EV outside of warranty. I was genuinely intrigued at the prospect of a 20k nearly new Tesla but getting it fixed would be the issue. Theres nowhere for me to take it locally and my nearest Tesla service centre is 45 miles away 😂. I know they have mobile mechanics but 9 times out of 10 they wont be able to fix an issue. Sadly these things really are only worth leasing for the moment, but again that results in you being tied into an expensive agreement for a few years that you cant extract yourself out of easily if you needed to. Getting one through a work salary sacrifice scheme is probably the safest way to get into one if you really must.

Used car with the nagging thought, why did they bin it? MG has 7 year warranty, and ALL the toys. Both are still way overpriced. Looking at MG ZS EV vs ICE £14,000 price difference, so if you consider a autobox new would cost £6,000 Engine £2,500. so take them off a ZS ICE price then that makes Battery and Motor cost nearly £23,000 It's a con.

I'm not an "oil industry stooge" I am an EV owner - Audi E-tron 50 Technik which I bought new in 2020, and here are my good / bad / ugly real world experiences and thoughts. First off, do I like the car? yes, very much, I love the way it drives, and can find very little that I don't like about it. Will I be buying another EV? (I will be changing the car this year at 3 years old) An emphatic no I will not, certainly not until the charging infrastructure is vastly improved. So, here we go, I was told by Audi that the range of the car was 193 miles on a full charge, that turned out to be untrue, the most I have ever been able to get out of it was around 165 miles in the summer, in winter that goes down to more like 130 miles, and the charge time increases. I hear Tesla fans saying "should have bought a Tesla" sorry, I wouldn't buy a Tesla for a couple of reasons, I just don't like them, I think they are ugly, I hate the interior with that huge iPad type screen, and (not from personal experience, but from speaking to several Tesla owners while waiting at charging stations) questionable build quality. I would say that over 30 months of ownership, I have wasted more than 600 hours of my life (an hour a day 5 days a week) hanging around at charging stations waiting for my car to have sufficient range to complete my journey - I travel the country in the course of my business. "Should have planned your journey more carefully" I hear you cry, believe me I do plan as carfully as possible, yes I use ZapMap, that oh so useful app that forgets to tell you that a charging station is not working, or that your planned charge point is occupied by other drivers wasting more hours of their lives. Why do I need to download different apps for different charge points? when I used to stop for petrol or diesel, I could fill up in a couple of minutes, and pay with contactless card. I didn't care too much about the weather either, if it was pouring with rain I could fill up under the shelter of a huge forecourt canopy, I have lost track of the number of times I have been soaked while waiting for the charger to authorise the charge, why are all the charge points out in the open? Finally, cost, I have a home charger which is fine, marginally cheaper than ICE fuel, on the road charging is at least equal, and in many cases more expensive than ICE fuel. One minor point, I have probably negated any potential cost savings with the money I wouldn't normally have spent buying service area cups of overpriced coffee.

@@neilspare9597 There are things wrong in that comment. I just don't know how you were getting ripped off with home charging - mine is 10x less than diesel Passat that did 55-60 mpg. I pay 7p/unit for night charging (up from 5p 2 years ago - and falling in price again), and I also have solar too. I agree with the apps - FSI for corporate control - chargers are finally nearly all cash pay now - but unlike petrol/diesel where people power complain at price, 85p unit is stupid and gouging for electric. I pay 40p/unit at Tesla superchargers. (I don't have a problem if you don't like Tesla cars - but they are forcing the requirements of range/charge speed). The Audi etron was not a good introduction to EV cars - one of the worst efficiency of all EV (see EV real world figures), and the early charge rates were bonkers crap. I am sorry you were put off, just avoid Audi for now for EV cars, they are just not acceptable. Finally, apart from a crap passat, I come from a long line of car ownership starting with a Morris marina in 1980, and included a T5 volvo, and I am happy with my EV, best car I ever had.

I'm surprised you guys desided to compare old with new EV?. Both cars parent companies are well known VW group and SIAC Motor China. Actually SIAC Motor (MG owner) is producing Skoda, Audi and VW in China and holds 50% of the venue there. I'm telling you this because you count Skoda as a premium brand. It's not. The fact that Mg5 has better efficiency, V2L and few regen levels speaks for better EV technology. 360 camera, MG Pilot and better software are prons for the chinase brand. Lastly VW Audi is buying EV platforms from SIAC, because there platforms are total failure and officially there is custumer resistance to get VW cars. This is the reason VW gives 0% APR at the moment. I'm not sure why why your channel is not working in the customer's interest and is promoting failing brands instead. For example MD4 is 2nd best selling EV UK because 1st is Tesla. Information is all around us guys. You cannot mislead use anymore. Regards

After my 7 years 5 months experience with EV's, I wouldn't buy either car here. All EV's are flawed by battery degredation and loss of range with time and use cycles as all lithium ion batteries do, as I know to my own cost, through dendrite formation, which does not occur whatsoever, on ice vehicles. There is the massive financial depreciation on either vehicle compared to an ice vehicle also and the very poor range and abysmal charging infrastructure. Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't touch any EV with a barge pole ever again.

£400 to £500 pounds per month on PCP. What world are you living in. You talk of £30,000 plus as being not a great deal of money but to most people it’s way out of their reach. It’s about time EV car prices become more realistic to the average U.K. person, then maybe you would see a higher uptake in the EV market. Of course we must think about the public charger network all of which are in the hands of 14 or so private companies who are NOT answerable to the U.K. Government so they can site as many or as little of chargers anywhere in the U.K.

Those who are working for a living, traded in a used car and have saved up for a small deposit AND have a good credit rating. They are the car users that will afford this including myself. 'Range Anxiety' is resolved by having a home charger, using an APP to plan your long journeys. You don't wait 'hours to charge' - you only charge up to 80% if on a long journey - the extra 20% takes too long and can be acheived on cheaper rate night charging at home. My EV drives a lot faster than the ice car I had - in fact I ensure it does the speed limit everywhere I go because it now comes with adaptive cruise control as standard. As for fire hazards I've never seen one go on fire yet - the last fire I was aware of was from a petrol car in a car park.
