eBay once had a pearl white example of a Lexus LS430 being auctioned off with 989,000 miles (not kilometers)! It was in very clean, original condition. 2001 model year. The owner drove a LOT of highway miles, but holy smokes! Close to a million million miles in the original engine and transmission? Wow!

3.5L is very reliable. I have one in my Lexus GS, the dual injector version they use on the Tacoma now. Just change the oil every 5K.

@@alb12345672 Yes my mother has the 3.5 V6 in her Lexus as well. The 3.5 is a proven durable engine. I use Mobile 1 full synthetic oil and have it changed every 4K miles. I also have a transmission flush, every 30K miles, as well as the front and rear differential and transfer case changed on our pickup. If you properly maintain Toyota / Lexus products, they will last forever… well at least 350K miles.

@@Doc1855 anything will last a long time if you change out the gear/transmission/engine oil per the maint schedule. You can do it early, too if you like, it’s your money.

@@MJA5 A lot of the newer vehicles manufacturers say that the transmission fluid is “lifetime” and never has to be changed. Yet I still have a transmission flush every 30K miles. My college car was a 5 year old Corolla that had 70K miles on it when I bought it off my sister (it was her college car) for $500. I drove it for many years after I received my doctorate. It died in 2002 with a whopping 488K miles. That’s when I bought my 02 Camry and drove it until my needs changed and needed a 4WD or an AWD, so I bought a 2011 my Rav. I still drive it today

How about a mid 90s Civic with 130 on the clock? Retired and drive 3,500 miles a year. Why on earth would I buy a new car? An EV? My fuel bill is less than 600 dollars a year at 5 dollar gas.

With proper maintenance, those duratec engines are known to be quite reliable, with close to Toyota-level reliability.

You can’t beat the 4.0L engine, in my opinion it’s the best engine Toyota has ever made.

@@Nobody-dc8dp Not really. It's just that the 4runner is one of the last truck-like, body on frame suv's and other suv's are unibody, making them more smooth riding like cars, but the 4runner is still pretty quiet.

I have a 2012 RAV4 with 50k miles, 4WD, and the 3.5L 269 hp engine which is probably the best part of the car. Smooth, powerful, and gets decent mileage: 23.5 or so in mixed town / country driving and up to 29 mpg on a long trip. The smooth 5-spd. auto trans really helps the mileage when I can stay in 5th gear for a lot of driving miles. Love its ability to pass slow vehicles in the mountains.

They are decent compared to the 1st gen coyote 5.0, and the problem ridden 1st gen 3.5 ecoboost, but I've repaired PLENTY of broken valve springs on many 6.2 ford engines. Both in the superduty chassis and the raptors. I've yet to see ANY newer ford gas engine turn 300k yet without major work. I'll stand by my experience, and many others with the 7.3. 6.2 would need serious help working this hard for this long. This old truck is much more reliable, by a long shot, than a 6.2, or ANYTHING newer, from any brand, in any model. Maybe the same era 12v Cummins could be a contender. I've seen more million mile 7.3 trucks than I can count in my career so far... Could not say that about another vehicle no matter the make, model or year. Ever. I have yet to see a million mile second gen dodge either. The dodge truck itself isn't up to the task. Great engine in a shit truck. As I said, and also fact, It's by far, one of the most reliable and industrial engine options ever available in a pickup, and no the 6.2 doesn't even come close in reliability. They certainly don't build them like they used too. - From a well seasoned Ford tech of over 20 years.

@@georgesrisomsak9650 Thanks for this response. I owned about 15 Ford Cars, have 5 now work on them, not a tech but I know alot. Yes, I know about the valve spring issue . I also have an early DOHC 4.6L 95 Lincoln Continental. It broke a valve spring and easy repair. Those are also considered very high reliable engines. 5.7L toyota trucks have the issue too. How many of those spring grenade the engine though? I am sure some, but rare. I believe it happens because the 6.2 has very long springs. There are guys with 4,500K on 6.2Ls. I even thought of replacing mine (probably a sunday of work) but the ford parts guy talked me out of it, he said it is quite rare to grenade an engine and the new spring has a risk too! He said there is one in the bay with 500 miles! Next to the 3v 5.4L though the 6.2 is miles ahead in reliability, but I agree no modern engine is perfect. Even the crown vics can blow plugs. I am not familiar with the truck diesel engines, but they sound very reliable! They also have little emission hardware which causes nightmares. My neighbor has a newer 2019? ecoboost and the phasors were replaced TWICE already. I picked him up once in my truck :lol: It used to rattle like an old chain every morning.

My brother in law has the same engine in his f250. After 600K miles he decided to have a new one installed. He decided on the engine swap ($10K) over $90-110K for a new f250. When they’re not pulling their 5th wheel, they’re pulling their horse trailer. He’s had the transmission rebuilt and last year he had a new 3rd member installed. I too love Ford pickups but we don’t need a big truck for our place. We’re on our 4th Ranger. They can fit between the rows of trees in our orchard. Our 11 Ranger is an XLT super cab 4X4 with a 4.0 V6 and a 5 spd automatic transmission with a LSD and tow pkg. I did add a K&N intake and a FlowMaster exhaust, LineX spray in bed liner, air shocks, running boards. I’m retired now so it’s mainly for hauling a yard of soil, gravel and such or taking me to a fishing hole. This one only has 35K miles on it so I’m sure my wife will be using it after I’m dead and gone.

@@Doc1855 So 600K miles of hard use wow. That is pretty remarkable even for a diesel. Your 4.0L SOHC Is known to have timing problems but with very good maintenance they can last. By 11 they probably used the best parts. I also have a 96 Explorer with the 4.0 OHV, that is an extremely reliable engine. I have 4.10s and an LSD. Not powerful but quite reliable. The superduty now comes with a pushrod engine option. 7.3L But they are still selling 6.2Ls

Luis Marty, I’m surprised he didn’t mention this engine, but then Honda hasn’t used this engine since the 2017 (or 2018) model year.

But in my opinion, one of the best engines, Honda ever built! It’s just too bad that the trend amongst automakers is going toward smaller turbo-charged engines because of EPA regulations. 🤨

Some manufacturers are having major issues with those small turbocharged GDI engines.

@@luismarty1685 Honda being one of them…when they went to the 1.5 liter turbo 4 cyl., there were issues with oil dilution. Honda has since worked on getting a fix for it, but personally I don’t feel they’ll last as long as the naturally aspirated models. I hope I’m wrong.

I wouldn't buy are car that has one of those 1.5L GDI turbocharged engines.

I'm also glad that the Ford EcoBoost engines weren't mentioned either. When it comes to the domestics, I usually like Ford but I've heard about the EcoBoost engines having nothing but issues, especially the 1.6 L 4cyl models used in the Escape and Fusion.

Pretty sure that the Camry has never, EVER had a 1.2 liter engine. Not in any western market, anyway, but I totally agree that their engines are close to bulletproof! With regular maintenance and belts and hoses and fluid changes a Toyota will easily reach 250-300K miles. No issue.

Yes the GM 3.8 V6 was a great engine. Had one in an Oldsmobile Intrigue. Engine was great ,the rest of the vehicle not so great. As far as 6cyl engines it is hard to beat the 3.5 liter Toyota engine. We have one in a Lexus ES 350 now ,that is one smooth engine and gets good gas mileage for a V6 .

Now that is a good engine. Vey fuel efficient and reliable.My daughter has one in her Toyota Corolla. Unlike a lot of new engines the 1.8 liter Toyota engine does not burn oil.

I agree. I have owned both Toyota and Honda cars and trucks. My current Pilot has over 155K miles without any drive train problems. The Tacoma I had was trouble free with over 175K miles on the 3.4L V6. We've had a CRV and Odyssey as well. My wife currently drives a 2020 Highlander that should be passed to my younger daughter when she is old enough to drive. I will be passing my Pilot to my oldest daughter within a couple years and getting either a Toyota or Honda truck.

I’ve had 8 V6 Nissans (VQ30DE/VQ35DE FWD and RWD/VQ35HR Hybrid and VQ37VHR) all ran with no issues some even his 300k miles. I used top tier gas, changed the oil ever 3k in older cars 5k in newer cars. I serviced them at the dealer and has good experiences. I’ve also owned cheaper Nissans (Sentra’s) and had good experiences as well. Sorry yours was bad

Not a common problem on the Lexus GX. The engines in these really have no major issues before 200,000 miles that can be considered common. Especially with a new 2023 model with over a decade of engine refinement/improvement behind it.

The only time i have heard of people with that issue is when they neglect common mantainence. I’ve had that engine and have never had any issues. But my sister has had that issue, but the previous owner really neglected oil changes.

I’ve got a 2006 4.0l V6 toyota hilux. 350k klms. Only thing I’ve had to replace is a starter motor (about $220). Not bad for a car of that age. Still runs perfectly

The 2.5L turbo is a great engine too, but has a higher likelihood of requiring long term repairs due to being turbocharged (more parts and complexity).
