In todays video, I give a brief overview of some of the most common non-photosynthetic corals found in the aquarium trade. Non-photosynthetic coral are completely aposymbiotic meaning they lack zooxenthellae and therefore are entirely dependent on supplemental feedings. The coral I mention are the black sun coral (Tubastraea micrantha), orange sun coral (Tubastraea faulkneri), yellow and red finger gorgonians (Diodogorgia nodulifera), and a Scleronephthya coral. Scleronephthya are commonly sold under the same names as the Dendronephthya genus which include: carnation coral, cauliflower soft coral, tree coral, flower tree coral, and orange soft tree coral. They appear similar with a few physical differences, however, care in the aquarium is often the same. Over the course of the video, I give an overview of the diet and feeding, water parameters, and placement for these corals. For many of these coral, phytoplankton make up a significant portion of their diet, if you’d like to watch a video on how to setup a phytoplankton culture you can watch the following video: • How to Culture and Har...

I’ve been reading “Plankton” by Iain Suthers, David Rissik, and Anthony Richardson and it has been making me rethink the way that non photosynthetic corals are approached and how corals, in general, are feed. Like how you mentioned the laminar bidirectional flow, the day and night cycles (and lunar cycles) of these corals habitat is very apparent and should be thought about more. Not necessarily should we try to recreate these cycles but use our knowledge about them, combined with our knowledge on the corals natural depth, to infer food types, size, and frequency of feeding.

Exactly it’s very interesting how these factors may affect their longevity in aquariums. I have not read “Plankton” but it sounds like an interesting thanks for sharing!

Cool! How long have you managed to keep the scleronepthya alive with this method?

I got myself a blueberry sea fan that has finally humbled me and its not doing so well in my display pico. I have been feeding daily for it but it seems to be melting away, or having algae fmgrow on it somewhat now after a few weeks. I got brightwell reef snow, live phyto, and reef roids as my food options. Live brine/copepods as well but idk if they go for that. Any tips appreciated

Hey! Could the nitrates and phosphates be the cause of the algae? I’d try to carefully remove any algae from the surface of the gorgonian. Is it placed in a higher light area? I’d say for feeding, live phyto and live copepods are great. Adult brine shrimp might be too large for the polyps to consume but the larvae are perfect. I personally haven’t used reef roids but it may add some extra nutritional value to the live foods. Also what is the flow like? These could be factors that effect survivability.
