Caring for sheep in cold weather

Winter is a challenging time for farmers and ranchers with livestock. Today's video is purpose built to shed some light on the hardships of caring for sheep in cold weather and to display the care that farmers put into their livestock all year but especially when the weather is harsh. Winter storm warnings, blizzard conditions, frigid cold, frozen water, all may challenge farmers but surely won't stop us from caring for our sheep in cold weather!

Im expat South African living in NE Nebraska. Im starting a herd next spring. Lamb is hugely underrated in the US. We need to change that.

Yes, that was an extremely cold front that we had. Never can you be too cautious for your livestock or other pets.

The trusty bucket measure certainly makes it go more quickly we usually use blue (2 gallon) which weigh 15lbs and black (3 gallon) that weigh 23lbs. Tomorrow I have the lovely squelchy job of finding and replacing a water line which knowing me I will slip over in.

Buckets are a nice way to measure quickly and consistently. That's unfortunate having to.dig up a waterline especially in the cold or frozen ground

At least their wool is keeping the sheep 🐑 warm but their heads and legs are cold 🥶 so maybe they should keep their heads and legs warm by snuggling like penguins 🐧

Interesting video. I do have one question. For times when sheep are penned indoors, what do you do to prevent things like hoof disease or foot rot from spreading in close quarters in the barn?

We have never had a case of any foot issues or other diseases while they are confined, but we also change their bedding bi weekly too which likely prevents those issues by keeping a clean sanitary barn

No problem, search our channel for cost of confinement vs cost of pasturing and sheep 101 lots of good information to help others. That's the reason we made our channel is because this information was nearly impossible to find when we started.

Hey folks. I was wondering if you can help my friend out. She has a small non-comercial farm with chickens and a gorgious 1/2 Anatolian and 1/2 Great Pyreneese male dog about a year old that she can no longer take care of. The dog looks similar to the one in this video but has a mixed grey and white coat. Here is what she posted to her Facebook... "I’m am absolutely gutted writing this. I have cancer that I was born with and it have it again. I have agonized over posting this because all of my dogs mean the world to me. Huck is extremely special. He is deathly afraid of car rides and I have been sick with debilitating migraines and haven’t been able to work with him as much… but I still work with him every day. He knows sit, hold, shake and is very good mannered for his age but he isn’t fond of leash work. He is very good with chickens (as that is all I have) and is still learning as he’s only a year. He has been around other dogs and is very protective of me and the property. He is probably the sweetest dog I’ve ever met. No food aggression and is submissive to my female dogs. He is trained on Premier 1 fencing. He is very loving and I need to find him a home close by. I currently live in south central MO. Please no negative comments as I am completely heart broken." I'm just praying that someone close to her location could help her out. She has a heart of gold and I'd really like to help her find a loving home for her dog preferably on a farm because that's what the dog is use too. She's in Texas County, Missouri I believe. Maybe someone could throw me a link to a group or forum and I could share her post there.

He sounds like a beautiful dog but unfortunately we have 3 LGD currently and don't have a need or the time for another one currently. We pick up two puppies in December to work with George as he is getting older and will retire soon. I would get on Facebook and goto the 417 farm and garden group and ask around in there as there would be someone in there I would think that would be interested. We are in Texas county Missouri ourselves, and that is actually how George found his way to our farm. Good luck and I hope she can find a good home for him. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Your feed trough is too tall.

Not for our setup. They eat their supplements out of it just fine. If it is lower they will poop in the trough, or they will also be tempted to jump over it.

So, you're smarter than everyone else and won't listen. I'll just keep quiet going forward until you say something incorrect.

I've learned from others who have sheep and raised them for over 50 years as well. Before I met them I did learn a lot from the internet too. It can be a good tool if used right. For the sake of curiosity why do you believe that the feed trough is too tall?

@@FreedomFarmsMo most of the crap on the internet is not correct. Then people like you propagate the incorrect information until everyone believes it is accurate. Just watch your sheep, they'll tell you why it's too tall.

I'm asking you, spread the knowledge. I don't see it when they eat, they come up eat their grain and move on with their day. If you are referring to lambs not being able to reach it, this feeder isn't for them, the creep feeder in the barn is. You are the only one that has pointed it out as a matter of fact so share your point of view and enlighten us. People like me aren't doing any propagating. My wife and I built this farm ourselves. In 5 years we have went from 10 acres with 3 ewes to 77 acres and 160 ewes. Look at previous videos that show how we built our fencing, we built our barn, our shop, and repair our own equipment with our own hands too. When I say we built I don't mean we hired either, I mean we built with our own hands. All while working full time jobs, one of us with a job that demands 60+ hrs every week, and at times sends me to other places in this world.
