Wow, I was fortunate to hang with Carl in his shop in the basement in Brooklyn when I bought my doozie No Frills Scroll 4-String Bass, he's a hoot, what a great afternoon that was. Man, the conversations, wow ! with Les Claypool's walnut four string just sitting there being worked on. Surreal. Carl said he'd build me a bass if I could find him a solid Buick, no joke ! We discussed 'life' more than anything, which later I realized all plays a part in musical style. To this day, I just have to mention this part, sorry for being long winded, I had played that CT bass through a pre-Fender SWR amp, with a Telefunken tube (sometimes with an RCA black plate tube), and hands down to date there is no other bass that compares to it; just as true natural organic acoustic woody sounding like a real '50s upright bass this sounded like, locking in with my drummer on his true acoustic instrument (the wooden drum set), we both yelled, "Whoa..." when we heard the marriage of wooden acoustic instruments mend together.. Good times... :D

Primus is the reason I became a musician, first time I heard my name is mud my mind was blown! I owe everything to them, so of course I have heard of the Carl Thompson bass but really didn't know much about it until this video, thank you so much for sharing, such an amazing thing to document!

This is wonderful! After I heard there was Jason Momoa show where he interviewed Carl, I had to seek it out. There was a time in my life, a little over 20 years ago, where he gave me bass lessons in return for helping around the shop. They were a lot more than bass lessons, for sure, and it was a very special privilege to have had that experience. This really captures the feeling of being around Carl!

I've always loved Carl Thompson's basses.

So awesome. Great clip. Some years back, I was extremely fortunate and picked up a 4 string semi frills ct second hand. Such an incredible bass. Jason was wise to go fretless with the 4 string. I kind of would like mine to be. Ct Basses just feel like they’re meant to be fretless. Wish I could actually meet Carl and talk to him about it. He seems like such an incredible person. I’d love to see his shop and listen to any wisdom he has for building.

I have two CT guitars, and love them dearly. Great stuff!

This young man inspired me to become a luthier! Every time I make a bass, I ask myself , how would Carl build this or how he would set the heel block. I humbly make a CT tribute bass that is not for sale, those are only samples for me and my son. Thanks to everyone helping spread the CT story.

I saw James Taylor in concert at the Pantages theatre in Hollywood, and his entire back up band, the section, appeared to have stringed instruments all from this guy. they are distinctive. the section was supposed to be the best instrumental rock band in L.A.at the time, according to a hipster friend, and did play flawlessly well. A very long time ago. From what little I know of island culture, Momoa seems to represent it honorably.

I got to check out 2 Carl Thompson basses at Roman Guitars in Vegas. One of them was a 6 string with a tremolo. Beautiful instruments.

5:50 a few kids in my high school started playing bass (and listening to rush) after frizzle fry and suck on this came out, then when les started playing his fretless 6 string, they all pulled their frets out too. Gotta be careful about "sharing your gift" lol.

I was always surprised that Les Claypool was the only famous player I ever really saw playing a Carl Thompson.
