Thank you very much, Martin. It was a pleasure to watch as well as your comments and the photos are very inspiring. Just wanted to remind you of ND filters or Vari-ND or Variable density ND, whatever they call it, that could help you when you're short with exposures in bright daylight. Oops, just saw in your latest video you've already got the solution.

@martinhensonphotography 2 жыл бұрын
@@GeorgiosKalaydjian the sekonic meter in the video is a modern one, the auto leader is a vintage meter as you know, as long as the selenium cells are in good shape it should work fine, it’s measures reflected light so you will have to know we’re to point it for a good average exposure, maybe measured light from a 18% gray card, what I like about both meters is the analog scale were you can read of exposure times easily, in my opinion better than the digital readout

Very nice and educating movie 😊 Just started my journey with Pentacon Six and this lens will be my next purchase. To fix your problem you can buy 2-3 round ND filters to mount it on the from of the lens to extend the exposition time.

Great video Martin and the photo's were also a success. I also have a Pentacon 6 and a Carl Zeiss Biometar F2.8 80mm with the serial number 38716, a Carl Zeiss Sonnar 180mm 2.8 with the serial number 7261930 was added a few years later and guess what? it has the same problem. I've heard a few times now that the cause is the grease that was used to lube the internals has gone hard over the years, but can be released by slowly heating the lens body with a hairdryer. If this really works it would save having to open the lens. A second possibile cause is a small rod connected to the aperture blades is not connected any more, this is the small pin that can be depressed from the rear of the lens. I enjoy using the lens on my Canon EOS 7D and it helps to keep the muscles in trim. Greetings from Germany.

Hello David, tranquility describes it perfectly, as well as these pictures you've taken there. I know a few, rare spots around here which can transfer visitors in a similar mood. Whenever I spend time there, I feel like my mind comes to some rest. Most modern tombstones are like data sheets: name, married or not, dates of birth and passing away. The ones with a description of the lives, the people, I prefer much more. A beautiful place, thanks for doing this. The Sonar used to be my favorite lens to work with the Pentacon Six TL I used to own many years back. I even had colour and grey filters for it, and if I remember correctly they had the same diameter as the 50mm Flektogon (or maybe I had a dedicated stepping ring on one of them). When the film advance of the camera got out of control (a common issue) I decided to sell the entire set. Nowadays I regret having done so. If you are willing to fix the diaphragm once again I'd like to recommend some ultrasonic cleaning of the blades in a fat dissolving solution. Partial disassembly won't do in the long run, the blades would always keep some grease. Maybe your local optics specialist can support you, the usually have ultrasonic cleaning machines for their customers' glasses and shades. Best wishes, O.

But I found a lifehack, if you stop down the aperture on lens before mounting it camera on body, this will stay stoped down for a while, I have found that this is because of little thing that you can push on the bottom of the lens, I am planning to remove it (it opens the aperture while you press it

Thank you Martin! I am interested how you meter incident light. Are you pointing lumisphere to the camera direction ? Also you mention that Pentacon six is not a Hasselblad. I have two of these as well, and one of them is stuck wide open like yours! Does anyone know if it is possible to DIY fix it with machine oil or drops of alcohol on the iris blades? This lens has such luscious bokeh at f/2.8 though, so it's not too bad stuck at f/2.8. But it would be great to get it back in full working order.
@S51E
@S51E 10 ай бұрын
Please do never apply oil to the aperture blades. Usually a thorough cleaning process of the disassembled aperture blades with isopropyl alcohol should be enough for it to work again. Otherwise there are specialists in Germany that can repair your lens for a fair price.

The Carl Zeiss 180mm f2.8 Sonnar lens was originally develope as the Olympic Sonnar by the company for the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games.
@randallstewart175
@randallstewart175 2 жыл бұрын
Right, the lens has an unusual history. Shortly before the Olympic games in Berlin, Hitler's favorite lady photographer decided she needed a fast telephoto lens for her Contax II. Her desire filtered up to Hitler, who told Zeiss to make her a lens for the Olympics. With the Fuehrer watching over their shoulders, Zeiss found an ability to design and produce the so-called Olympic Sonnar in record time. So one of the most versatile telephoto lenses, with outstanding performance for its day, was born. It was shortly followed by a 300mm 4.0 version, which is also very good. when I started in photography in the late 1950s, these lenses were fairly available in a number of mounts, but today both are hard to find in mounts which can fit a modern camera.
