The problem with equal pay sadly is. If I work for a company as a salesman and I bring in 20k but the best salesman brings in 200k. We both are doing the same job but I am bringing in 10% of my co worker. Should we be payed the same salary? I think not.

I consider Carli one of the top 3 best US female players which represented the USA with class and professionalism. It's funny watching this interview with Alexi Lalas who did nothing but advocate for less playing time for Carli for the last 4 or 5 years of her career in favor of younger players. However, Carli's resiliency and ability to come up big in crucial matches proved him wrong over and over again making her the top female CLUTCH player this team has ever seen. Good luck to Carli and I hope she is enjoying her retirement!!

Besides the point, but Mary Wambach is the best Center Forward the US has ever produced. It’s really unfair to target the players when these players don’t select themselves for the team. It’s the Federation that keeps picking the best stories instead the of best players. Blame the Federation for also hiring a gutless gruber to be the head coach. Someone needs to explain why the coach isn’t American when America has had the best women’s soccer for 50+ years? Is Rapinoe still good enough to make the team at 38? If she is then that’s an indictment on the Federation for not grooming her replacement 10 years ago!

They specifically rejected the mens deal in favor of less risk and more guaranteed benefits... Then after winning realized they could make more under the men's contract. Complained they weren't getting pay and tried to void the agreed contract. Now they split money from the men whilst still having the benefits the men don't... If this isn't sexism against men... I don't know what is. Maybe the men's should have same benefits outta their pockets? No no... That's just crazy.

Lalas twice mentioned that the announcement by USNWT team meant that the men’s team acceptance of the agreement was a fait accompli. That the women’s team would not have made the announcement if the men’s team had not already accepted the terms. This is an incorrect assumption. The reality is that the announcement was purposefully meant to apply pressure to the men’s team in the court of public opinion. Now, if the men do not negotiate their CBA with the women’s interest in mind, they will be branded misogynistic, sexist, etc….. BTW, what the women are asking the men to do would be like the NBA players pooling their salaries and splitting it 50/50 with the WNBA players.

Apparently the culture was so toxic and players were so focused on their brand that they went out and won another World Cup in 2019. Lloyd grumbled about her lack of playing time during the 2019 WC, but by the time the tournament started Ellis had already made up her mind that Lavelle was going to get those minutes instead. Whatever issues Lloyd has with Ellis, Morgan and especially Rapinoe, the record shows that, toxic culture or not, Ellis's belief in the squad she chose for the 2019 WC was the correct call.

The women's world cup is a joke with normally everyone knowing whose going to atleast be in the semi-finals every single year... there is zero competition and up until close to the mid 2000s moat countries didn't have pro-women's teams/leagues so the uswnt were basically going against teams that got together once ever 4yrs and never played much after that (basically you had a proffesional uswnt going against a bunch of part time players) also I really wouldn't bring up the womens 2019 world cup because the uswnt became the laughing stock of the world during that world cup blatantly diving for penalties (their last 3 games in the 2019 world cup they did not score a single open play goal and were flopping in the 18yr box like a,fish out of water trying to draw penalties and the world was laughing)

One thing she said which is very interesting (and goes unmentioned a lot) is the team's financial success is contingent on winning. One thing the USWNT (and even the Canadian women's national team) could count on was continued success vis-a-vis their male counterparts to the point where the average person could name more female soccer players in either country than the men. In a bittersweet way, that era is, unfortunately, looking to be coming to a close as both the Canadian and American's men's soccer teams field the best teams they've ever had and are hosting the '26 World Cup. At the same time, the rest of the world is getting better at the women's game and so the dominance the U.S. once had is fading (see their failure to qualify for the gold medal game in Tokyo). Unfortunately, for women's sports, people seem to like dominance; the Williams sisters, the hype around Michelle Wie in women's golf, UConn in women's college basketball and, of course, the USWNT. If they can no longer be that, Carli is right, they're going to be in a tougher situation.

So that’s not my concern, i agree with her you can’t be complacent, and you still have to work hard as a team. Trust me talent for the women won’t be a problem for years. The problem my be the intangibles, miss managing the team and the women takes their position for granted. Sure they won’t win every World Cup or every gold medal , but they will be in contingent.

Carli Lloyd quit soccer at the time when the US was dominant and the rest was playing catch up. The way the game is played now is very different from 3 years ago. Look at this WC: Jamaica sends Brazil home, Japan wins over Spain, Colombia beats Germany, South Africa kicks Italy out. European teams have tons of good competitions: Champions League, European Cup. European Leagues are growing and getting better. Not an excuse, but our young players don't get that type of exposure, while young players like Oberdorf, and Walsh get it constantly. That is an advantage for European teams and it shows. Regarding the toxic culture she is referring to, I believe adult women have the ability to compartmentalize and leave their business off the field. Yes, they make commercials, they get endorsements, they find ways to make more money, it is all part of the game. The fight for equal pay was picking during the 2019 world cup and, still, the US was a solid, almost unbeatable team. It was during that time and the 2020 Olympics that Lloyd started to complain about her playing time and started throwing shades at coaches and players alike. She had some weird actions like running after they lost to Sweden and expecting her teammates to do the same. It seems to me she was the "my way or the highway" type of player/person. That conduct is also detrimental to the rest of the group. Her attitude was part of the toxicity she likes to talk about. Also, as far as I know, she didn't say NO when her paycheck came after the equal-pay agreement. Other player's exposure brought her big benefits, and while those players were in courtrooms and offices she was silent. You don't get to enjoy that win and then trash the people who made it possible.

I don't personally know any of the players but would just say that a) Carli has been a truly great player b) that she is entitled to her views c) that was only a small part of this interview and d) she and Solo are the only members of the team who have expressed that unhappiness as far as I know. So I am left with the impression that if the climate was "toxic" it was for her and Hope, not the rest. The uswnt has been lying about what happened since the original bargaining agreement. They were offered the same deal as the men, they rejected it for a different one. At the time they even claimed they won a huge battle for womens rights. Then a couple years later they sued for discrimination. The judge rejected their case because it’s obviously not discrimination if you’re offered the same deal as the men. Public opinion is absolutely not on their side. Complacency is the killer of champions. The US women's team will make way more than any other team at the past world cup even though they never advanced past their first knockout game. The even split between the men and women's tournament purses is the worst thing that ever happened to them. Carli said that after 2015, the endorsements started coming in. And players started to think about, "how can I get an endorsement, build my brand?" and you know what, I get it. Those endorsements were probably worth as much as their paychecks, maybe more. And these players are not paid 10s of millions of dollars like the men. So for some of them, they started to focus more on that stuff. I think the same thing started happening this past season with FC Barcelona femení. After winning the treble in 2020-21, the amount of attention on them was insane, and the endorsements started flowing in. In 2021-22, you could tell players were trying to stand out individually more, also players were getting some endorsements here and there. For me personally, I thought it was a little sad. Barca's game is based on connection and sharing, and I felt that some of that went out the window with this new culture. In the end, they didn't end up winning the treble in 2021-22, and I don't know, but maybe part of that was because they moved away from what made their game magical.

Well, they went on to go just one game short of being undefeated last season and win the Women's Champions League again for their second title out of three straight appearances in the final. They also had a mind-boggling +108 goal difference in the league, having scored 118 goals while conceding only 10 in a 30-game season. That sort of dominance is to be enjoyed and celebrated, rather than be complained about because of not winning a treble. Same goes with the USWNT. They have been dominant for so long, when most other countries were not investing in women's soccer like the Unites States had been, yet all people can do is cry and complain as it becomes evident that the rest of the world is slowly catching up the USWNT and that they aren't always going to be as dominant as they once were.

It was crazy after that 2019 World Cup win, all the big name players were posting endorsements across the gram. Sadly, money talks. These ladies weren't being paid what they were worth by the league and they saw it as an opportunity to help secure their future. Also leading up to the Olympics last year, you saw the team struggling against some bottom teams. They were NOT as clinical as they use to be, bad passing, timing, etc. I remember having discussions with friends about that and sure enough, first olympic game they drew Sweden and in my heart I knew they weren't playing well enough to beat them. They had only tied with them a few months earlier off a BS penalty call that saved their bacon.

That's because she was no longer the focal point of the team. The 2017 season was the year that Carli went from starting to coming of the bench. After the injury she sustained in august of that year, Jill had to start someone else in her place. From that point on she never regained her starting role. It was very unlikely that She would ever get back into the stating lineup given the success the team was having with her on the bench. From 2018 thru the World Cup in 2019 Carli kept of talking how she should be starting etc. Even post WC 2019 she went on Julie foudy podcast and continued to say she should have been a starter despite the evidence that show otherwise. She was more concerned about being a starter than than the teams success. Had she started in the 2019 World Cup it would have been Carli kicking all those pks and collecting all those awards, pretty much a repeat of the 2015 WC where she kick 2pk and picked up 2 additional gals on free kicks. In the 2015 World Cup it was her teammates that did all the hard work to earn those pks and free kicks only for Carli to get all he recognition just because kicked 2pks and picked up 2 addition goals on free kicks and ended up wit 6 goals. Even know when they talk about the 2015 WC its about about 6 goals, they do not give any credit to her teammates for earning those PKS and free kicks

While their skills at soccer are waning I see their mathematical skills continue to suffer. Right now these "spokespeople" on USWNT must be replaced. I have NO IDEA what Rapinoe was even doing on the 2023 team. She selfishly took a spot that should have gone to a young and upcoming woman. Anyone that watched Rapinoe play (which was few and far between) knows she was god awful. Its time to clean house with the USWNT. They are no longer known for their prowess on the pitch but known for their hysterical drama in the press and frankly it is hurting the next gen. I know I'm not alone is saying I have had my fill of Rapinoe. USWNT = WNBA

I respect her. As a spectator, I could tell the team became toxic. They focused too much on political activism and not playing the game. We watch sports to escape politics, don’t shove it in our faces.

Bullshit. Players from all sports use their status to influence people, whether it's buying a particular shoe, headphones or believe in a specific ideology. Everyone does it. You're just pissed players like Rapinoe are using their platform for their beliefs that run contrary to your own.

I would have preferred Lloyd to exactly describe what she means by toxic culture. What and who is she referring to???? God, just come out and say it. Lalas, as is typical, never asked any follow up questions about that...all the guy does is ask stupid, simple questions. How about digging deeper, Alexi? Good god, she opens up a huge insight and no follow up. I would have liked Mosse to jump in and ask the question...David is the brains of this operation.

she doesn’t want to put any of her teammates on blast and i think many people would respect that. you can probably guess who it is for the most part. she doesn’t want it to cause a bigger problem and i think people should try to respect that

@@rodmansanchezspirit I would say that she failed miserably then. Calling the current USWNT culture toxic WAS putting it on blast, and just gave all of these right-wing dimwits more ammo to bully the current players. Totally uncool and looks like sour grapes to me, and Carli Lloyd lacks self-awareness to detect that it is in fact herself that is the source of toxicity...

If Mosse is the brains of the operation, does that make Lalas the one with the looks?

Carly speaks of the toxic culture after 2015. She points out players fighting for endorsements, ie, she is speaking to Alex Morgan. But this is wholly unfair. This did not begin with Morgan, it began with Mia Hamm. Judy Foudy was instrumental in developing a soccer league and getting proper funding for the national team. (Remember the strike before the 99 World Cup?). So the distractions are not new, they have been with the team from the beginning. After Carly's phenomenal 2015 World Cup, she was over the next few years, slowly relegated to less playing time. By the 2019 World Cup, Jill Ellis did not start her, with, I think one exception. Carly admits to being bitter about it. But where women's soccer is today, financially, in no small way, can be attributed to Hamm and Morgan's marketability.
