Doug, we have the athleticism and plenty of it. Sophia Smith, Alyssa Thomson, etc. The problem is our technical quality and coaching. I think Carli WAS talking about everyone, everyone that came before her time and After her time. Meaning not just everyone that is looking at them now but the future as well. The problem is these players (Megan Rapinoe and all those that disrespect the National Anthem) KNOW and SEE what this country has done for them but still want to whine and disrespect everyone. These players are ungreatful and a big part of why they are not playing as a team and why they don't have the support of the nation like the previous teams did. As long as Vlatko is the coach, we will NOT win anything. As long as they have players like M.R. disrespect half the country, they will not play as a united American team.

The ceiling is and always was… sandwich making and mouth shutting. None of these ladies is living up to that potential.

The difference maker is the lack of tactical skills and not being able to put together passes to break lines and open the 18yd box to exploit opposing teams defense. You can’t out “Athletic” a team that is technically and tactically superior no matter how much you try to out “Athletic” them.

The big name players starting are doing it because of their name and not based on form or productivity.

That’s not why the level has gone down. US Soccer tried to take over the youth game from USYS (US youth soccer) 10-15 yrs ago and they decimated the wonderfully run youth soccer programs in America. They’re poor youth programs are resulting in lesser talented players simple as that. I was a product of the old system who played 7 years on the youth US National teams from the time i was u14 to u21 and professional soccer after that. I’ve been coaching now for 20 years and have watched them destroy the youth soccer system right in front of my eyes. Don’t get me started on their coach education system which is terrible.

MY OPINION IS CLEAN HOUSE CHANGE THE CULTURE BUILD A TEAM PAY THEM AND PAY THEM WELL SO THEY CAN TRAIN YEAR ROUND AND FROM THE START THEY TRAIN AGAINST YOUNG MEN. BUT THE FIRST THING IS REMOVE THEIR NAMES OFF THEIR JERSEYS.

Vlatco is a horrid coach. If you actually watched the game, he is literally being outcoached in every major tourney game. He doesn't play to win. Terrible strategist, and horrible motivator. He had killed the form of our best players at this world cup and it is showing. The criticism of the Women's team is warranted, but not letting Vlatco side to go with an old talking point is really lame.

This narrative has gotten way to out of hand- good gracious this is not the first time this has happened to the US team. It’s been a time when the didn’t make the the finals and came in third place- Japan has beaten them . They went twelve years not winning a World Cup and when they did when the World Cup it wasn’t easy, winning by one point and even going to PK’s , these are great players but they are human as well , a lot of these conversations are taken out of context.
