There’s a brand-new, George Carlin comedy special, which is mystifying and disturbing since he died in 2008!
Legendary comedian George Carlin was unceremoniously resurrected from the grave by a comedy podcast claiming to have created an AI-generated Carlin, based upon decades worth of his existing material. The special they created - “I’m Glad I’m Dead”- had the AI created legend commenting on current issues such as mass shootings, America’s class system, streaming services, social media…even Taylor Swift’s sex life…Really, no Really!
But the computer-generated version lacks Carlin’s brilliance and has created a brouhaha that leads us to an unsettled legal question…whether training A.I. language learning models on publicly available written, visual and audio content infringes on the copyrights of artists and authors. Is it ethical or legal for someone to create a new George Carlin, without his or his estate’s permission?
Jason and Peter needed to find out, so they went to the source, Carlin’s daughter, Kelly Carlin to discuss the controversy, her lawsuit, her dad’s legacy, and what she feels her father would have to say about the current controversy?
Kelly Carlin is a storyteller, writer, performer, photographer, a practitioner of Zen Buddhism and the daughter of the legendary comedian George Carlin who died in 2008. Imagine Dudesy doing an interview with AI Kelly Carlin. The Dudesy pod is foreshadowing the basically present future of show biz. In the future lawyers will reference Carlin v. Dudesy in court precedings.

I don't think is watering down, on the contrary, people introduced to George , seeing for the first time the AI material and after that seeing the original will think 'Man, The real guy was way better, a genius. The family should actually push and encourage more AI material, free publicity but should have a say in what is coming out and what not. After all, those that created the material might LOVE George Carlin.

April 3 (Reuters) - The estate of George Carlin has settled a legal dispute with two podcasters over their unauthorized, artificial-intelligence generated comedy routine imitating the legendary comedian, according to filings in California federal court. Carlin's estate and the makers of the podcast Dudesy told U.S. District Judge Maame Ewusi-Mensah Frimpong, on Tuesday that the podcasters had agreed to permanently remove "George Carlin: I'm Glad I'm Dead" from the internet and stop using Carlin's image, voice or likeness without its permission. No other terms of the settlement were disclosed.

It really is a weird out-of-touch moment instead of this purposeful thing against George Carlin. The best take on this AI trend imo is unsurprisingly from Hayao Miyazaki who is shown AI by a bunch of animation students who want to prove a machine can draw as good as a human can. Miyazaki has two things to say about that and they've stuck with me ever since - it's insulting and the end of times is when we humans stop believing in ourselves.

ai is guesses, it could be good guesses or spot on guesses but it's still guesses and it can't possibly guess what things the person could had learned or the changes of opinion since the snapshot of time that was utitlized with creation of the ai

The "New Special" is awful. It doesn't sound like George Carlin's work, in the least. I doubt the people that created it, have the slightest clue what's the meaning behind Carlin's work. He was one of the greatest intellectuals of the 20th Century. This Dudesy crap, seems like an excuse for an uneducated rant and a proliferation of swear words. George Carlin liked to cuss, but he did it with a high level of intelligence. Dudesy wasn't able to deliver jokes on the level of Beavis and Butthead, let alone George Carlin.

Carlin was hilarious, but he was not 'one of the greatest intellectuals of the 20th Century' that's just silly. Dudesy is a very funny podcast and the Carlin special, while not at all created by AI (it's called Kayfabe, give it a google) it was very well done. Chad K is a very talented comedy writer. He pulled off two comedy specials in a sixth month period. The first special was two hours long if laughter were included.
