Carlingford Omeath Greenway along the shore of Carlingford Lough
The Carlingford Omeath Greenway is the latest addition to Carlingford's and Omeath's walks and cycle trails Carlingford Loop Walks . The purpose built greenway between Carlingford and Omeath is a section of "The Great Eastern Greenway" currently being developed along the east of Ireland coastline. Built on the old Dundalk Newry & Greenore Railway (D.N. & G.r.) alignment the greenway along the shoreline of Carlingford Lough is the perfect place for a walk or bicycle ride and suitable for all fitness levels.
With five different access points along the Greenway's route between Omeath and Carlingford it is possible to choose both the distance and time that you wish to spend walking or cycling.
The Carlingford Omeath Greenway is very well signposted at the trailheads and access points along it's route.
The Greenway provides great views along Carlingford Lough from Omeath and Carlingford directions whether towards the Irish Sea or inland towards Omeath the views are breath taking! Warrentpoint & Rostrevor across on the northern shoreline, the mountains of Mourne in County Down, while Slieve Foy in the Cooley Mountains on the southern shore provides a mountainous backdrop as you go.
The Greenway will take you alongside fields full of grazing sheep, cattle and horses, through old railway level crossings and even a few bridges with plenty of old railway era gateposts and gates still in situ.
Nature abounds all around as the flora changing with the seasons provides great colour, resident and migratory birds will keep you company (BIRD WATCHING PAGE) as will the occasional Seal while the gentle trickle of the many small waterfalls, brooks and rivers that you will encounter provide a soothing sound track.
The Greenway is the perfect place for runners, joggers, cyclists and walkers!
As the Carlingford Omeath Greenway is away from the main road for most of its distance the Greenway is ideal for parents with small children in buggies, walkers, joggers and cyclists (with or without the stabilisers!).
Walkers with pets are welcome but they must be on a leash at all times.
A small section of the Greenway close to Omeath (approxiametly 300 metres) is on road i.e. cyclists must use the roadway while walkers use the foot path.

Access point is in the centre of Omeath next to the pier.
Carlingford Trailhead:
Access point is located at Carlingford Marina, a 10 minute walk from Carlingford Tourist Office, just beyond the Harbour and King John's Castle on the righthandside travelling towards Omeath on the R173. Please note that there is a parking fee of €2 at the Carlingford Marina (free for patrons of the Marina and Restaurant).

Built mostly along the old Dundalk Newry & Greenore Railway (D.N.& G.r.) railway line, the Greenway which opened in 2014 connects Carlingford and Omeath and in the very near future Omeath to Newry (work is currently underway on the Newry Canal Tow Path from Albert Basin to Victoria Lough while funds have been allocated to build the connecting phase between Omeath and Victoria Lock.).
