Travelling champion defending his belt in Italy, France, Monaco and Denmark. He cleaned the division out of every worthy opponent. Defeated 4 hall of fame fighters, to put this into perspective Mike Tyson fought the same number of inductees and only beat 2 out of 4. 100 fights and never got knockout out with 80 consecutive victories and only 3 losses. Held the belt 7 years with 14 successful defences.

Hands down one of my favorite fighters ever! If you wanna learn about ring generalship, watch Carlos Monzon. Despite his appearance and his background he was a master boxer. His left lead was constant, his right hand had murder in it, he was a sound defensive fighter, and he had a high ring iq. You would barely catch him making any amateur mistakes. I love how he would switch gears, in the beginning he would start slow and then towards the end of the fight when your exhausted he would turn it up and simply just grind you down with his work rate.

A great champion for sure. I still think Hagler beats him. Hagler was shorter but had a 75 inch reach vs. Monzon who had a 76 inch reach. Hagler was too skilled, too athletic, too well conditioned and had a granite chin. The fact he was a switch hitter would also have created issues for Monzon. 1. Hagler 2. Robinson and 3. Monzon.

Could I say something about draw decisions in Argentina? I am not completely sure about the weird scoring system the country had, but as I remember it a boxer had to have a clear points advantage to win a bout, if close then a draw decision was the result. This is the reason that Monzon had multiple draws on his record: even more so was that of Nicolino Locche, the defensive master with little stopping power; as a result he had as many stoppage wins as draws, 13 of each, but one wonders how many of his draws would have been wins elsewhere, the same going for Monzon.
@kenehlears7716

He fought Hagler when he fought Briscoe. He fought Sugar Ray when he fought Emile Griffith. In fact, Monzon destroyed every welterweight that tried to make the move up so that helps with Hearns and Duran. I would not want to take anything away from the incredibly talented and capable Sugar Ray Robinson, the one man that I think would have brought more skill and discernment as a fighter to the ring. Triple G was Nino and the only other one besides Robinson had to be Mayweather. So somewhere between Robinson, Monzon, and Mayweather, the greatest of all time lies.

@@fsrsaa Valdez became middleweight champion when Monzon retired, undisputed no less. He fought some of best fighters of 70s! Look Valdez is ranked as 27 greatest middleweight RJjr is ranked 17. Jyst to give you froth, perception to quality. Valdez was welterweight champion when he moved up to middleweight. Monzon beat him twice. Monzon ended his career on a 11 year undefeated streak 81-0 over that time period and retired as champion. Funny thing about fighting Monzon you were never same fighter afterwards. He literally drain you with his work rate. My two favorite fighters of 80s were Monzon and Salvatore Sanchez who despite his brief career had a more filled resume than any featherweight not named sandy saddler who is greatest feather of all time. Simply by dominating the willow 3/4 fights. I have Sanchez in second spot. He defeated by ko Wilfredo Gomez Azumah Nelson and lil red 2x that Nelson fight would be Nelson’s only loss in next decade. His resume may be brief but filled with so much quality. Duran ein fighter of 70scedging Monzon only Duran lost in 70s Monzon never tasted defeat in 70s like Sanchez Monzon early losses were when he was learning to fight after he became skilled he avenged those three losses. Two of them came when he was recovering from mono which was just a shell of himself in those fights who ever gave him permission to step in ring should have been barred from sport. For those of us who actually seen these fighters fight in Monzon final year he had a open contract only liccata and Valdez were willing to get in ring. Tony liccatta was sn upcoming fighter who really was a good fighter he never recovered after fighting Carlos. He literally was a soul stealer inside the ropes. He simply wear you down. And hammer you in the deep waters of rounds 13-15 just like another brilliant range fighter Salvatore sanchez. These were two of greatest fifteen round technicians sport ever seen. My all time midglecwright rankings 1. Harry greb 2. Carlos Monzon 3. Ray Robinson 4. Dick tiger 5. Marvin hagler 6. Gene Tunney if you have to ask who Tunney is don’t comment on boxing he was man who defeated Jack Dempsey was a great middleweight lt heavy weight and heavy wright who only suffered one loss in his long and distinguished career he should ranked much higher but this is for middleweight rankings only. Ifcyoure wondering why kreb this was Nan Robinson beat gor greatest boxer in history only kreb was was better middleweight. Snd st 163 lbs kreb fought a lot bigger guys once even had a heavywright fight he was out weighed in a lot of fights by 30lbs. The Pittsburgh windmill was the standard every fighter was measured including Robinson. If this was welterweight it be Robinson in a runway Robinson went 99-1 at welterweight. But middleweight rankings are a different animal only Monzon retired as champion in boxings long history of middleweights Monzon never lost title and was undefeated as champion. He was simply the best middleweight. Although I have kreb ranked 1 kreb fought more and defeated hall of famers than any boxer in history of the sport. But I’d take Carlos style Bivol reminds me how how he fight at range but Carlos was sneaky shifty with boxing iq actuslly using the ropes as a weapon to pivot in one direction at last moment as he clock you with the hammer (his straight right) repeatedly always set up by the left jab he had a subtle way of resting the jab on your person Turing you in a particular direction just to meet that fight. He was just a brilliant tactician in the ring. No one could win a decision off him because he plasters that left jab at you all fight long. He famously once said effectiveness with less volumn today it’s called efficiency in accurate punches. Pretty sure his words were lost in translation. another famous quote other great champions lost thier title in ring I never lost as champion going into retirement in 1977 as champion. Even as he was becoming more mortal in 1977 Carlos was still handful for anyone else. He beat a prime venue Brisco as did Valdez Hagler struggled against a faded Brisco a fading Duran and actually lost to Leonard who doesn’t even appear in middleweight rankings. Simply put you need fight at middleweight to earn ranking points at weight class. A great fight would have been between Valdez and Leonard two outstanding welterweight champions! Only Valdez was undisputed in both weight classes.

Exactly who did Monzon avoid? Nobody. He fought all the top comp. Talking fantasy fights, Monzon only loses to Ray Robinson for sure. He gives everybody else serious trouble imo and beats GGG/Canelo/Charlo handily. As far as power, 65% ko rate isn't too shaby. About the same as Ali. Just my thoughts on it.

Monzon takes decision with that jab in your face entire fight. But top middleweight was krebs 2 Monzon 3 Robinson 4 Hagler/ Tunney/, tiger it’s so close. Middleweight deepest divison and tiger has wins over some all time greats. An oft forgotten nsme who one of all time middleweights. My top two are krebs and Monzon. Krebs was first fighter to fight anyone anywhere regardless of color. No champion previously did this . Cost him against tiger he would avenge thatvin another fight he fought all his fights at middleweight whether it fighting for light heavyweights or heavy weights being out twigged by more than sixty pounds on many occasions what makes him special is his mantra anyone anywhere anytime. The Pittsburgh windmill as my uncles said other than Robinson at welterweight finiest fighter he ever seen. I felt that way about Monzon. Simply a larger version of alexis arguello but with more stamina like a Sanchez. He was middleweight champion when I was a teenager Hagler could have had a fight but he kept stumbling with a kiss and draw just as Monzon announced his retirement in 1977. He wasn’t the hagler of the 80s we knew he was still an impatient fighter than and a technical boxer would give him fits even if they were inferior fighters. He really upped his game after that antefermo draw he became much more focused. As Monzon said his favorite fighter to watch. We all progress at our own pace . What was amazing about Monzon he finished on a 11 year undefeated streak 1966-77. 81 fights. To close his career. Never forget his words we all find our pace. You know when to walk away agsinst Valdez he knew it was time. Wasn’t as quick as he normally was he knew it at end of fight announced it was his last. Wish more would walk away like this. His favorite line I’m not a muiltiple chsmpion to be a muiltple champion you have to lose your title. He is only middleweight to retire as champion. And his 7 year consecutive non interrupted reign is longest.

Too slow for Hagler. He would get coutered too often to win the fight. Hagler defense and footwork are marvelous in many ways, without mensioning the inside fighting skill. Hagler would no doubt be able to attack whenever he so desired without taking punishent most of the time. Haglers stamina and work rate is much more elevated. All in all hagler would take the win. Without mensioning he can fight from southpaw and orthodox almost equally has good. In my opinion hagler is too much to handle for 15 rounds.

Appreciate your breakdown on Carlos "Escopeta" ("Shotgun") Monzon 🥊🔥 Monzon baffled me for years due to his nondescript, unspectacular boxing style. I come to appreciate what Monzon did in the ring (like you said, separate the man and the Boxer) and your video shed more light on his simple yet effective style. In regards to Fantasy Matchups, here are my immediate thoughts on how it could go down without deep dive analysis: Monzon vs Hagler: UD 12 or 15 for Hagler (The best matchup of the three. Hagler and Monzon would go at it but I think Hagler will ultimately outlast and outsmart Monzon to cruise to a decision). Monzon vs GGG: MD 12 or 15 for Monzon (This will be two mostly flat-footed fighters in the middle of the ring trying to win the battle of the jab. GGG will put down Monzon with a flash knockdown but I see Monzon taking this with his workrate). Monzon vs Hopkins: SD 12 or 15 for Hopkins (but there might be dubious officiating here and a robbery for either man; toughest (and ugliest) fight of the three to score)
@e.a.poecrnimacak354

Monzon would destroy GGG and Hopkins and I think he beats Hagler by decision in very close fight (Hagler had granite chin, no way that Monzon would knock him out). He could be the greatest of all time at middleweight, but Sugar Ray Robinson and Harry Greb had greater careers overall in my opinion (longevity + both fought in more weight classes against tougher opposition). P.S. He was the favorite boxer of both my father and grandfather.

Disagree with James Toney and Mcclellan. I can see James Toney beating Carlos Monzon if they fight at Light Heavyweight but Monzon beats Toney at Middleweight. Mcclellan's opposition is worse than even Monzon's. Monzon has never faced anyone bigger than himself like Mcclellan plus Mcclellan is incredibly powerful but there's a huge gap in overall skill and IQ in Monzon's favor here.
