The reason he sounds different in the verses is because he was singing through a megaphone, which kind of with other effects, muted and somewhat distorted his voice so to the natural ear. It just sounds weird not having that live.

You talked about this bringing you back to your childhood. Hearing Santana's guitar again brought me back to first hearing the Abraxas album in the fall of 1970. I was long out of childhood by then but still a kid at heart. Good to feel that way again! And happy to see that this kind of music can still excite young people half a century down the line. 🌛

@@rat4spd According to Wikipedia, the song was started by Itaal Shur and then, without the original lyrics, given to Rob Thomas for completion. I understand that he not only wrote new lyrics, but also changed the melody. Originally, he suggested George Michael as singer. But after hearing the demo, Carlos Santana wanted him to sing the song himself.

I was driving my kids to school the first time I heard this and I looked at my daughter and said, "That's Santana!" It had beed over decades since I had heard one of his songs. It was the guitar! No one had that signature and it was unmistakable. I loved him when I was in High School, but here I was probably 20 years later and I was transported back. You are right, This is one of the happiest songs ever written. Can't sit still.

There's a story out there that when Rob was pitching this song to Santana that Carlos stopped him at the line "change my life to better suit your mood." He asked Rob if he was married to an Hispanic woman and Rob responded that he was. Carlos answered that he could tell by that line. Can't vouch that it's a true story but it sounds like it might be.

This is the original key. I always thought the verses were too low for Rob, which made it hard for him to give it vocal character. But the song requires a bit more vocal range than Rob can do well, so he made it work for him.

Carlos Santana has said in previous interviews that, when Rob Thomas shared the lyrics with him, he wondered how it was that Rob knew about Hispanic culture - specifically, what a "Muñequita" was. Then he met Rob's wife, and it all made sense.

It was so original in the late 60s early 70s and it still is. Cover some more of his stuff such as "Soul Sacrifice" or "Black Magic Woman" . They are truly remarkable.

So glad you played this live version. Have seen Santana live numerous times and it's always AWESOME. Check out the beautiful stage and backdrop, the group of very talented musicians and array of numerous instruments. AND THE CROWD! Always a very diverse crowd with everyone dancing together in camaraderie and friendship! I always leave with such a wonderful feeling! I know you were a little disappointed with Mr. Thomas's singing, but I have seen this song performed many times, sometimes with other singers, and Rob Thomas adds an electricity to it that is unmatched. Maybe because he wrote it. Loved your reaction to this living legend that is SANTANA! He has enlightened my life with wonderful music for over 50 years now. All the way back to the first Woodstock! Check out his Supernatural release. Packed with great artists and great music!

You're missing something important about Rob Thomas's approach to singing this song: He's creeping. The song is about an overwhelming obsession with a woman that he doesn't think returns his passion equally. OMG, Carlos threw in a Santana jam at the end. Magnifico!
@xheralt
@xheralt 2 жыл бұрын
No. Creeping is about imposing one's affections on a woman irrespective of her feelings; creepers don't change themselves, they expect (demand!) to be accepted by their love interest as-is. The modern take on this song would be its an anthem about simping ("change my life to better suit your moods"); but it is also about expecting a fair return on the (considerable) effort being put forth. A one-sided relationship is never fun, there is a point to the demand that you picked up on. As opposed to just being demanding.

I agree with your assessment with Rob Thomas' vocals on this live version. In his defense the band is overpowering his vocals. In the "studio" version the sound engineer can bring up the vocals so it is not drowned out by the band. Santana's band is spot on. In a track with so much energy most singers would get overpowered.

Love your reactions as always. Smooth was a great song though it was later in his career. Carlos was known for his guitar work and his fusion of Latin sounds with electric rock, rather than for his vocals. Would love to see you react to something earlier, like Evil Ways from 69 or 70. I graduated high school in 1970 so I grew up in the Woodstock era, with Santana, Hendix, the Alman Brothers, and Janis Joplin. Soul Sacrifice is an instrumental that everyone loves in part due to the long drum battle that goes on in the middle.

@@maggiereneemusic Sorry but i didn't watched it since i'm no big fan of growling and screaming. Its ok if used in small doses but not if its more than maybe 10-15% of the song. Btw. Alissa has really nice clean voice, she made that duo with Charlotte Wessels from ex Dealain, whished she would do more like that. I'm for example really happy about what Melissa Bonny now does with Ad Infinitum while Rage of Light was also something i didn't really like because too much growling. Oh, but i watched your Scorpions video, its funny to see somebody who didn't know them since i know tham already since 1986 maybe and really loved their album "Fly to the rainbow" that i first heared at my older brother 😄🤘🏼 Also i'm german, so of course i know them and "Winds of Change" was a big thing here just like Roger Waters "The Wall" show he did in Berlin.

Maggie watch the clip shot out in the street (which also features Rob Thomas' wife) as the official video, it is even better with a cast of people dancing.

I think on the verse rob sounds like himself they just really edited his voice for the recorded version to have this effect on it. cause i agree i was taken aback by his natural voice too never hearing this live, but once i got used to his real voice its pretty good

Lol, don’t worry about Robs voice, did you even hear the bass, bottom of the grooving that song? And that crowd bouncing off the ceiling? That’s all you need to know ! Oh, and Santana can play too !
