Carlos Spencer first came to the attention of Auckland boss Graham Henry while playing for Horowhenua in a Ranfurly Shield match against Henry's men in 1991. Spencer was headhunted by Auckland, beginning a long association between the man who would become known as 'King Carlos' and Auckland rugby. He played in the Blues' first-ever Super 12 game in 1996, and would go on to represent the team until 2005.
He made his first Test appearance for the All Blacks against Argentina in 1997, landing 33 points in a 93-8 win. He struggled to fight his way past Andrew Mehrtens into the All Blacks jersey on a regular basis, often finding himself on the bench until 2002.
Having been selected for the All Blacks' 1999 World Cup squad but not playing through injury, Spencer finally made his mark at the 2003 tournament in Australia. He will be remembered however for the loose pass that was intercepted for a try by Australia centre Stirling Mortlock, sending the All Blacks out at the quarter-final stage.
Having won the Super 12 with the Blues in 2003, Spencer moved to Northampton Saints in 2005, ruling himself out of contention to play for the All Blacks against the British and Irish Lions in order to train with his new club.
Spencer enjoyed a successful period with the Saints despite their relegation from the Premiership in 2007, becoming a senior and respected player as they fought their way out of National League One. Spencer left Northampton in January 2009 after failing to break into the first team on a regular basis following their return to the top flight.
He later signed for Premiership rivals Gloucester on a short-term deal, leaving them to return to Super 14 action with the Lions in 2010. He would eventually move into a coaching role with the Johannesburg-based franchise under fellow Kiwi John Mitchell.

I might go to the grave (It'll take a fair bit to convince otherwise) that 2003 Blues backs; 10: Spencer 11. Rokocoko 12. Tuitupou 13. Muliaina 14. Rupeni 15. Howlett was the best back line in non-test history.

that's a big claim, especially when you consider that the 1986/7 Auckland side was widely considered the 2nd best rugby team in the world (behind only the AB's). Off the top of my head, Kirk @9, Fox @10, Terry Wright 11, ??? 12, Joe Stanley at 13, Kirwan 14 and Greg Cooper (I think at fullback). Five of that six were in the All Blacks' WC winning side. Tough to beat. Old timers like my late father would no doubt talk equally glowingly of the great 1960's Ranfurlie Shield side. No question though that the back three of the 03 Auckland side in Joe, Muls and Dougie was of the very highest calibre.

Carlos Spencer, in my opinion, was one of the best attacking first fives in the all black jersey. A great example of running with the ball in two hands, which gives you options on attack, and puts the opposition in to minds. His skills and decision making were on another level. He had charisma, pace, and a pretty handy goal kicker. He was awesome when he played for the Maori team as well. I met him in Gisborne 2004-05, promoting and signing his book. He was very humble and down to earth.

I certainly don't consider myself anything close to aficionado on rugby(I mostly watch&enjoy the Internationals)but Carlos Spencer was a Magician on the field..The way he attacked the space, faked&then releases the ball at just the right time, the accuracy of his kicking, speed&power&so on.. Absolutely unreal! And anyone who has had the opportunity to watch(be entertained, because after all team sports were supposed to entertain the public)this Genius can count themselves most fortunate..A true "All Black" Legend-among many of course..

3:42 this is one of the greatest moments in Super Rugby history. Carlos was hated down in Christchurch. He had mega beef with them and the Crusaders being an Aucklander and what not. The score was 29-31 to the Blues with minutes to go when he decided he would pass and run rather than kick and waste time. And instead of just casually popping the ball down the second he hit the try line he decided he would dart off into the corner and try. To complete it off he then converted the kick and gave the crowd a cheeky middle finger salute.

Definitely. I will never forget it. I remember watching this and going wtf is this guy doing when he didn't dot the ball down. It was already an unnecessary spectacular length of the field try, but that deliberate sideline conversion made it the stuff of legend.

J. Tizzle for sure one of the great moments in super rugby. King Carlos was my favorite player growing up but it was moments like in that Crusadors game that were his downfall too. He wasn't the greatest all-black fly half simply because he took too many unneccesary chances. It's what made us love him too I suppose.

Carlos was a player that I believe was ahead of his time. He played in a time where rugby was more structured and less flamboyant. If he was in his prime and playing right now he would have been much better than people actually thought he was. His amazing passes and kicks and style of play was far beyond the skills of the players around him at that time that people were frustrated with his style of play and made people ask the question what the f*#% was he thinking? Carlos truly was one of the better skilled players I think.

Actually the first years in the super competition wasn't that defensively structured and players like Carlos could have a field day. Carlos. A player in an era where touch rugby was so competitive. His touch rugby skills transfered so easily to 15 aside. If you can't touch him how are you meant to tackle him? It was unfortunately the roles he was told to execute, such as being a pivot or a box kicker. Carlos was exciting to watch when he was unleashed. Christian Cullen also fell into having to play a role and it lead both these great players overseas where they could be themselves on the field. So Carlos had an in measurable impact on rugby in an era of play the role. During that era the All Black's never won a world cup because of the Coaches of that era needing players to stick to fundamentals. That was why Andrew Mertens was picked over Carlos, simply because Andrew could enjoy being a fundamentally driven player. Carlos needed to be free to do what he could do.

He was a gift to the game and BRILLIANT when brimming with confidence! Repeatedly, through the seasons he outshone the AB players in the domestic seasons and often outplayed ALL his competitions. BUT HE DID HAVE FLAWS in his game! He was an X Factor! AN 'unknown' entity in attack and defense that national selectors didn't like or have the brains to understand!! There are only about 3 or 4 players who have EVER understood or able to read what Carlos was doing or about to do when he is on the move! Cashmore, Howlett and Rokocoko are three because of the numerous touch-games they played together!! (You watch these videos or replays of Auckland's reign and you can see how they 'read' and operate on the move!) Most other players just know to be prepared for anything around Carlos....but those three actually READ what's most likely to happen next....and get themselves into position and be prepared to join in!! Carlos SPENCER has earned AND DESERVES his place in the History Books of The Heavenly Game as one of the Greatest No:10s of the game!

+GC KIWI- you thinkso. no doubt he had game but to say he is one of 'the greats' at No: 10, you'll have to put him before a very tall list. as i said, exciting to watch and creative with ball in hand BUT shitass at times on D & not always right decisions at times with ball, just an opinion!!!! before you go off

mrakuma190573 he's not the greatest but he's up there like probably ranked 10th maybe .... definitely not num 1 like carter ... he was an all black fly half for a few yrs yah gotta be pretty good to get there mate .... not many players would make the ABs yah gotta be a pretty good damn fly half

The Auckland Blues have never been the same since he left. Along with Sam Tuitupou, Rupeni Caucau, Joe Rokocoko and Doug Howlett, Auckland were just magic to watch. The King!

Awesome player and one of the best backs ever. I always felt he should have played at 12 with Merthens at 10 or at least he should have beeen tried there for both The Blues and All Blacks. I personally think he would have been an even better as a 12 than he was at 10 and that's saying a lot because he was an incredible 10

So great to see these old faces again. Carlos was a super star and a huge entertainer. Redefined what a good first five could do. Was loved and hated even in nz. This era of super 12 was epic
