Showrunner Sessions is our ongoing event series where we go one-on-one with a showrunner (or showrunning team) to find out, “What exactly does a showrunner do?” Find out what they look for in a writing staff, the lessons they’ve learned on the job, and their approaches to running the writers’ room.
For this session, we learn from Carlton Cuse, the co-creator and showrunner of AppleTV+ limited series Five Days at Memorial. The seasoned showrunner of series such as Locke & Key, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, Bates Motel, and LOST shares his approach to the job, from how he staffs his rooms and what skills he’s had to cultivate to how he adapts real-life events for television. Moderated by fellow showrunner Shawn Ryan (S.W.A.T., The Shield).

This is fantastic! As an aspiring screenwriter, I am a big fan of Carlton Cuse. Martial Law and Nash Bridges were my favs growing up. Just finished revisiting the entire 2 seasons of Jack Ryan and finished the third very quickly - so engaging.

I guess with that Vanity Fair article we all know the secret now. "Sucessful" .Lost turned to trash and most of his tv shows were cancelled.

It's interesting how you can "know" things for certain after reading an article. If these past few years of experience has taught us anything it would surely be that you can't take any allegation at face value. Not saying that bad shit didn't happen but I don't think any of us can state with any sort of authority that we know what happened. As a longtime fan of the show, some of it I find believable, some of it not so much. But I don't know for sure. Also, Lost didn't turn to trash. A whole lot of people loved it all the way until the ending and the show is still finding new fans to this day. And it was a very successful show, whether you like it or not. Otherwise it wouldn't have been extended to 6 seasons instead of the originally proposed 3.
