It's a pity James Taylor has trashed her repeatedly publicly and privately and cut off contact. Perhaps for all his beautiful music and words, he is not quite as evolved emotionally as we would expect. Carly as always, in this interview shows us her grace, maturity, class, and soul.

It's just a shame he doesn't know how to be more human and forgive - especially for the sake of the 2 children they had, and her feelings toward him (recent bio she says he is the great love of her life.) Sometimes divorce can be just as much work as marriage. I've been divorced for 8 years and every single weekend for the last 8 years I have taken her out to eat at least two times a week, along with my younger son. I'm always over there helping her with her house, doing things in her yard, and take her places that she needs to go. My younger son lives with her and my older son lives with me. I also encourage my older son to see his mother. I actually get along with her better now than I ever did when we were married. You do whatever you can, especially when there are children involved. That way they know that you love them.

It's unfortunate that you'll never truly get to know how many people you impact with your decision to do divorce the right (& hard!) way. Certainly your kids' lives are better for it, & their futures will be better. And their children, if they have them, will know that love & respect don't end because the relationship has. And their children, too, perhaps, & on & on thru the generations of children who won't have to bear the weight of that mistake adults can make. But also who knows how many of those generations will advise their friends on long dark nights of the soul. How many of those generations will help their friends & exes & brothers & sisters find a better path thru love & endings. Anyway, my way of saying congratulations on your wisdom & effort to do right by your family. You've changed the present & the future for all of them for the better, which is all a parent can ever really hope to do. Well done!

I think that James has problems internally that frankly are beyond his control that led to his ostracizing people in his life including Carly, but I think it's shame, I think it's coming from a place of shame that he wasn't able to really talk or be around her again, I think it's a shame on his part, he admitted that he really didn't understand what it meant to be in a committed relationship, he took responsibility for it..

And it seems like he doesn't want to discuss her much. I've always loved Carly since her first album. And I always thought she was extremely beautiful. She also did her genealogy on Finding Your Roots PBS her background is extremely interesting.

He chose his drug addiction over her, and while he did sober up, I am sure there were things said we cannot hear, but feelings still felt that weren't acknowledged. It's hard to love someone when they are struggling, but its harder to love them continuously and the person supposed to receive love back doesn't give it in return.

@@outinsider So very true a heroin addict will love his drug like a lover more than he would any person in front of him. He was also jealous of her astonishing success and rise in music industry and her brilliant albums were selling... In the past, he really regretted being a drug addict. he said he was never there for his two oldest children. I've often wonder and noticed in the movie industry and music industry the first spouse/partner is with them in the beginning through the hardships and sacrifice, but when they make it big... Why is it they throw away their first partner?
@outinsider
@outinsider 4 жыл бұрын
@@Sentimentalgal05 I think you gave the answer in your comment about jealousy. His use of heroin probably was used as a way to cope with his feelings. I can only speculate, because its not like Carly didn't try and he wouldn't use his feelings in a good way from time to time. It is just there. Maybe he is ashamed of himself from that time and puts the blame on her, and that's on him to figure out, but I would think having two children they would at least talk to each other better. I can't imagine having to attend their children's life events and the children having to worry about where Dad is going to sit and where Mom is going to sit.

@@outinsider I agree with what you wrote Outsider.. my husband can't stand his ex (she's a whole mess unto herself) And we had to go to family functions, it was difficult and awkward. So I can imagine James Taylor's kids getting married, where is Dad going to sit... how far away from Mom on the opposite side of the room? lol I grew up having my dad, mom and stepdad all get along and be best friends. Which is extremely unusual. 24 yrs ago my dad was getting worse in the hospital, there is nothing more they could do for him. Dr.s told me to get all family thete. My dad asked to see my mom and my stepdad. I quietly step from the room, leaning out in the hallway and I just heard all three of them say how much they loved each other and they were so grateful they were in each other's lives.. My mom passed away 20 months later. I realized in that moment what a lucky girl I was. I just lost my last parent my stepdad on March 23rd, 20. It was hard, because they said me being his stepdaughter. I wasn't legally his family, so I couldn't make any arrangements for funeral. We had to try to locate my step-brother who none of us has seen in 30 yrs, my husband found him. Now we're just waiting for covid-19 to be gone, so we can take his Ashes to the military cemetery to have him buried with his brothers in arms from Vietnam. Its really different time for everybody in this country and around the world.

When you are married your partner is like a mirror. For some it is a reflection they can't stand to see. Obsessive artists often can't put family ahead of their art. They think they can do family like a hobby when they take a break. Family feels neglected. Getting high hides the mirror.

@@susanthames8200 he admitted the same himself years later. I'm a JT fan moreso than Carly Simon but that's just happenstance that I discovered his music and never took much interest in her either way. James has been able to reconcile a lot of things since he got sober. His older children adore him and that certainly would not have to be the case with all the things he put them through...being an addict and being on the road, not to mention anything he may or may not have done to their mother. Maybe Carly just raised them right, with the kind of love they needed, and taught them how to forgive and see the best in people, and to respect their dad. But I also think James did the work needed to enter recovery and mend those relationships. He is in a pretty solid second marriage with twin teenagers and it seems a pretty good second time around. Maybe this is the way JT always wanted to be and the drugs kept him from it. I have grown to like Carly over the past few years too. Recently as the world gets more stressful I find myself really fond of children's programming. On election night 2016 I cooped up to myself and watched a string of Winnie the Pooh movies of all things. I really love her contribution to them. Piglet's Big Movie has a lot of heart and would not have been the same without her music. It's not just the craftsmanship, which is surely there but it's the soul of a mother and a reassurer and someone who understands the complicated questions of young people and how to answer them. So it kind of makes me think about her as quite a figure in the life of her family.

The way I saw it, tragically, was this: Early on, James' had a tremendous musical power that captivated her. He was so unique. A beautiful man. Potentially the epitome of his generation. Time passes quickly. As the 70's ended a change was happening culturally. Through drug abuse he became a wet blanket on a beautiful swan. I'm no advocate for divorce, but I'm no advocate for abuse either.

Neither Carly Simon nor James Taylor talked badly about each other before, during or after the divorce. She once said it’s not that the marriage failed. It simply ran its course. He once said he felt he was too young and not ready to be married but Carly wanted to and he felt it was the noble thing to do when a woman suggests they marry.
