Last year I bought a car from Carmax. I researched vehicles and knew exactly what I wanted and could afford, and usual prices. I did most of the paperwork over the phone from home. The car was shipped in 2 days. I drove it, inspected it and bought it. Paperwork took 10 minutes. Car was sparkling clean and had a full gas tank. I'm very happy.

You had to do more paperwork at CarMax because you were signing all of the paperwork required by the state to register your vehicle. CarMax went to the DMV to register on your behalf, which is why the license plates were sent to you directly. Carvana did not have you sign paperwork, which is why you had to go to the DMV yourself, and why there was less to sign at Carvana. It doesn’t really have anything to do with CarMax being an older company, they just make the overall process of buying a car easier in the long run.

I can't believe the number of people trashing his decision to buy Fiats? Good grief people, if you don't like Fiats, DON'T buy one. He obviously likes Fiats. I've been shopping Carvana, Car Max and Vroom for the past few weeks looking for a Grand Cherokee Overland and I'm hearing the same stuff. "I can't believe you want a Jeep, they're a POS, get a Four Runner". Anyway, good run down on the two companies.

I’ve purchased my last car through Carmax but i decided to purchase a car with Carvana because of there 7 day return and money back guaranteed. That said, in my opinion it was the best experience I ever had! the fastest purchase I ever made on a car! Trick is go to a dealership and try a car you like and then purchaser it through Carvana.

I bought from Carvana. Not sure why you had to go get your tags. My tags were mailed to my house. Great overall experience, and super easy paperwork. I was in the process of rebuilding my credit, so I started with in-house financing at. 10.25%. Just refinanced with Capital One for 6.4%. No, it's not the super low rates, but it's better after barely 6 months of owning the vehicle. Damn Timeshare. (Update) With 39 months remaining on my 72 month auto loan I refinanced again with AAA and gotna rate of 2.99% AND shaved 3 months off of my loan. With a little bit of discipline and dedication to cleaning up my credit it is absolutely possible to change your situation.

Thanks for this. Definitely leaning towards using one of these services. I've had terrible experiences with multiple dealerships and just don't even want to do that again. Carvana more than carmax makes their real profits from the high interest rate. Car loans up to 72 mos with good credit are at 3-5%. 10% is what my credit card charges. 10% for car payment is a rip-off or financial slavery or shareholder profit. I bought a car from carmax with a loan from my bank at 3.3, carmax offered 6% and they hated that I brought my own finance. All the dealer profits are made on finance and insurance. The payment for a $30k car at 10% vs 3 is $130-150 more. Insane!!!!

We bought a 2018 GMC Terrain from Carmax, and the whole process couldn't have been easier. I still can't believe the amount they gave on our 2013 Ford Edge when we traded it in. It only took about 30 minutes and we were done signing papers. I've heard good and bad things about Carmax and Carvana, just like anything else in life

CarMax lots are loaded with lemons with accident history on many of them. Bought a CarMax car 3 years ago with 2 reported accidents (my credit wasnt great at the time and they would only offer me accident reported vehicles to choose from), complained about a vibration after my test drive, even the Toyota dealership couldn’t fix it and gave it back to me. So I was stuck in a 2012 Camry that vibrated heavily at idle for 3 years, and had to shift the automatic transmission into neutral at every red light to make the vibration stop. Ask for the CarFax on every CarMax car before you start financing talk. Also, CarFaxes are only as accurate as what the owner reports. Carvana discovered the CarFax lied on a car they were going to sell and found bent frame damage on it that was not reported and rejected it from their retail inventory. Carvana doesn’t deliberately offer cars with accident history like CarMax does.

Carmax is a fairly easy process to purchase a vehicle. In my experience it was no stress & no pressure at all. The sales representative is very mindful in conducting business with thier clients. I believe thats makes them so unique. Really wish that purchasing brand new vehicles was like this from major car dealerships. Challenging part of carmax is finding a vehicle that has your desired mileage.

When I picked up my car from Carvana in Florida they asked me to take the car for a drive for as long as I wanted, to make sure I was happy before I signed my paper work.

I just sold my car to carvana 13500 and carmax wanted to get me 11000 . I got the whole quote I was very happy

Because of medical problems I had to quit work and my credit took a nose dive, but within 30 minutes I had applied for credit, chose my car and bought it, with no down payment, then they delivered it but we didn't like the way it drove so they took it back. Will I buy from Carvana again...........YOU BET.

Thanks for doing this video. I see a lot of comments about high APR which is kind of annoying. If you are building/repairing credit it's good to know what to expect. You can always refinance later.

Good job! I also bought a car from CarMax, no problems with show and tell, test driving, financing. Very easy, no hassles, a little long in the financing room, but explanations were complete and thorough, that was impressive.

Bought with Carvana. They gave me an insane trade in price for my old car...like 2500 more than ANY other dealer would do and have had no issues with the process

Son, great video. You are a great presenter!! I purchased a 2012 Mini Cooper Countryman S from Carmax in Fairfield, CA. I paid cash so your financing situation was different. I purchased the car for $15,000. It seems theft is a big issue here. After completing all paperwork, I left to go to BOA and get a check certified for the full amt and brought it back to Carmax. I still cannot believe I had to go back on line to BOA, with the salesman standing behind me watching. I had to prove the money was just taken out and legitimate! Never ever in my 66 yrs on earth was I ever subjected to that! Good for Carmax I really liked the car.

This was a great video and has good to know information in it. To me though I would go with Carmax because of their more traditional feel and methods vs. the seemingly gimmicky Carvana.

Regardless of who you buy from, have your car inspected unless you know how to do it yourself - just because they do a 150 point inspection doesn't mean anything. 2 CarMax BMW's have been a flop for me. First one with 25k miles had no accident reported. Upon my final inspection before signing, I noticed the car had paint work. Did not buy. Second one was 3 years old with only 7k miles and damage reported to rear only on the carfax I ran. Decided to look at the vehicle anyway. Paintwork in the front, paintwork in the rear, side, misaligned trunk/headlight gap, all the wheels curbed (touched up), rocker panels scratched as if the car ran something over and more. Moral of the story, if you are picky LOOK at your car fully or pay to have it inspected properly.

Based on my experience, Carvana has quite a few things to iron out still. It was my first time using their services. Unfortunately, we ended the transaction with them. And we do not plan on using Carvana again any time soon.

Thank you for sharing. I am leaning towards Carvana as opposed to the traditional brick and mortar dealership. I hope the Carvana business model takes off and that there are similar startup companies that emulate that business models. I would be happy to see many of the traditional dealerships go out of business. Also, as of March 2022 and of writing this comment, I can see companies like Carvana really taking off as it ameliorates consumers like me having to go to a number of dealerships and have consumers compete against one another (& and not compete against the dealership) for a vehicle. This is truly the perfect storm of ingredients to see Carvana overtake CarMax as the preferred way of shopping in the next few years. Ravi Peiris M.D.

CarMax also offers a 90 day bumper to bumper warranty and also a protection plan of 5 years and up to 150k miles on every car they sell.

The only valid comparison for interest rate comparison, is if YOU had applied for financing from both places.

Bought a 2005 Grand Jeep Cherokee several years ago from CarMax. Had 5 days to return for any reason and financed through them and had 3 days to get alternative financing which we did through credit union and even got lower rate on our other vehicle. Jeep was great vehicle and after owning the Jeep for 5 years gave it to my oldest daughter and three years ago and it is still going. I also sold a vehicle to CarMax and that was a seamless process. Never had dealings with Carvana and probably won’t as I like to touch and drive cars I buy.

would have been nice if you had posted a bullet list of your points for each company...sometimes it was hard to figure out which company you were talking about, because at times you seemed to be jumping back and forth, and at other times I was not sure AT ALL which company you were talking about.

I’ve been trying to give Carvana credit but they’ve rescheduled my delivery 4 times and overlooked things like broken ac and radio not working in their bs “150 point check” and their customer service has been the most useless help I’ve ever seen from a 100% online process.

Bought a 2029 Honda Civic Si Coupe in 2020 from Carmax. It only had 3000 miles when I bought it. I had already driven a couple locally so I knew what to expect and with only 3000 miles I wasnt too worried. $900 to ship from Denton, TX to New Orleans area. Took 5 days. I was already already pre-approved through USAA for financing so that part was smooth. My Carmax rep was also a vet and had plenty of experience dealing with USAA. Pick-up day only took maybe 30 minutes. 42,000 miles now and so far so good.

Carvana will sell you a car with a salvage or rebuilt title so it makes sense that Carmax would take longer. If you are reading this and don't believe me try doing some research, they don't deny it.

I’ve bought 2 cars with Carvana. 1. I financed via my CU 2nd one I financed via Carvana. It wasn’t the worst experience and it’s definitely easier than CarMax. CarMax has a better extended warranty and financing options. I bought my current car via CarMax and financed through CarMax. CarMax didn’t have as great of an inventory selection and shipping was so slow. So I ended up flying to pick up my car and drive it home. The CarMax car was in better condition than my Carvana ones. CarMax also has lower prices than Carvana for the car I was shopping for. I’ll never buy a car again from a regular dealership 😂. Both of these companies are solid options.

I bought my Honda civic five years ago from carmax. It's great, just wish I didn't get the extended warranty. I barley used it.

Sold a car to Carvana. It too wsd very simple without haggling. Simply took some photos they came two days later put dow the check looked at it for 5 minutes signed some papers and away they went. Yes, I might've gotten a better deal selling on my own but I didn't have the patience to go through that experience. But got a good deal all in all.

the apr isnt really on the dealership though is it? I mean you can shop for your own financing pretty easily at your bank or credit union. My CU was actually easier to process the loan than it would have been at the dealership. copy of the purchase contract and copy of my insurance.... they emailed me forms the next day to sign and I picked up the check the next afternoon to take to the dealer. I think it could get kind of weird if they put a lien on it and send you to the dmv though- because you gotta put the lender on the registration

I just bought a truck on Carvana, it was so much easier than buying at a dealer. There's no sales people what so ever, only customer service reps. Really have no complaints, the truck is in great shape and they delivered it with my plates, state inspection, and a full tank of gas. Also you can easily cancel an order if you reserve a vehicle and see something else a couple days later that you like more. 7 day returns, 100 day bumper to bumper and they offer pretty cheap extended warranties (service contracts). About 8 years ago, I bough a vehicle from Carmax and it was a completely different story. Car was a lemon, terrible rate, sales people like any other dealer, bad experience.

We got a loan from our credit union for CarMax. A lot fewer add-ons after the sale compared to the usual car dealerships. No pressure from sales staff, they are not paid on commission, making more if they cheat you more.

Good video. I got my car through Carvana and they delivered it to me for free plus I do not have to go get my tags they mailed them to me. In my state you are required to have emissions done and they even took care of that for me.

You have to get your own tags, because they don't have a full local operation. Carmax has people to go to the registry, Carvana does not.

I just traded my car with Carvana. I got a loan though my credit union so my interest rate was only 3.25% for 72 months. I do like that Carvana didn’t pressure me into running my credit with them after I told them I already had financing. I experienced that with other places. I looked at several online lots Vroom, Carmax and Carvana as well as some traditional lots. Out of all the online lots Carvana offered me more for my trade in and I will say online lots appear to have better prices on vehicles which was helpful considering I was upside down a couple thousand on the trade in. It kind of balanced everything out. I did have the car checked out during my 7 days and it was fine. The cons with Carvana in my experience were, they rescheduled the delivery of my vehicle twice. They are sending me $250 for my inconvenience for that. They also incorrectly labeled the car as having navigation which it didn’t have exactly. I ended up keeping the car because I didn’t want to go through getting another loan from the bank and waiting for them to deliver again. I think Carmax would have been easier considering I can physically see the car and pick it up unlike Carvana. Idk if I would do it again. I guess if I saw a good enough deal sure.

I've sold to both Caravana and Vroom, but not bought from, almost, but it was a pending sale which means it's basically sold unless during delivery it's declined. Curious, did the codes work? More than once? BTW "your auto advocate" reviews both and VROOM, they make from $1800 to $2800 per car. My question did either one push "extended warranties" like the dealers do?

Currently buying from Carvana and have had 2 delivery delays thus far. Was supposed to get the car today but they said registration and plates were delayed by the DMV. Read a lot of horror stories on Reddit about this, especially in NY where I am. So really crossing my fingers that the car is delivered as of next Saturday's date, or even moved up if possible. The closest Carmax to me is an hour and a half from me. And I don't have a car to just pick up and go to it. Or else I would have checked them out. I do see however Carmax seems to offer home delivery as well so I probably will browse their selections if Carvana keeps the delays going strong.

Am currently in process of buying my fifth purchase at CarMax. By luck, I ran across a Carvana ad this morning and submitted my information on my trade-in. CarMax offered me $27K and Carvana offered me $28,700. Yep, I will now be purchasing from Carvana.

A month ago they told me that they only allow discount codes only to certain states. For that reason I choose not to buy from them and went with Vroom instead.

As far as car loans always go with a credit union and use that. Actually had a good rate with capital one since ive used them for business credit card

You mentioned that both cars had received a vehicle inspection. Did either company allow you to actually see that inspection? Were you given a copy, if it was actually done, of the inspection report? If your car received a check, was it performed by a certified mechanic who signed off on the report showing his certification number. Did you mention any warranty on the car? If so, was the warranty handled by a national company such as Car Shield? What about a CarFax report? It's not what these companies tell you or infer about the cars; if it isn't written, then it's only dealer talk.

Question: Did Carvana have any way to test drive, or is it basically a system where you better know what you want? I know they have a 7 day return policy. Did any sale reps ride with you from CarMax? When I shopped there the guy rode with me which is what typical dealerships do too.

So what price was car. Loan rate and length. Down payment?

I must say the only two bad things I heard about carvana was the delivery service and time . Also when it came to the tags and registration to get the tags.

Carvava offered me 9,990 for my 2016 Volkswagen Jetta. I went to Carmax and they offered me $13,600. It really depends. Try both 🤷🏽‍♀️

Might as well tell my story, I was looking for a specific BMW and every one I wanted got sold right before I could go see the vehicle to purchase it. This happened with about 5 or 6 vehicles. My wife looked on Carvana and found a similar spec to what I was looking for so against my better judgment I said “just buy it, I’m tired of looking”. I live in Florida and the car came from Arizona in about 5 days. Truck pulls up, pulls the car into my driveway, the wife and I drove it around for about 20 mins and we signed the papers. I think we had a week or 500 miles (whichever came first) and if we wanted to return the car we could. To be completely honest, everything was in the condition they said it was and there were no surprises. The only regret I have from buying with Carvana is that I didn’t pick up my car from the vending machine. I do not regret buying from Carvana not one bit. Though to save time, I’d recommend doing a test drive at the dealership to make sure that’s the car you want and then buying from Carvana if they don’t give you a better price.
