Just saw Jamal Mashburn on JJ Redick. He said MJ gave him a tip. Next week he had 50. MJ saw him and said “I see you implemented what I suggested”. MJ pointed out each All Star, then told Mash a complete break down of their game and weaknesses. MJ’s and Kobe’s attention to detail and competitiveness were on another level. When I was a kid, always pissed me off when Larry Bird was the high IQ guy and MJ was relegated to just some athletic marvel. The fact he averaged 22 at 40 years old with bad knees, showed his skill and IQ was enough to destroy dudes.

Yea that goes with the classic ‘just a scorer’ vs ‘all-around/complete player’ garbage… typical garbage. That is when the guy who everyone can see is more capable is given game diminishing terms… while a player who everyone can clearly see is less capable is given game flattering terms. In both cases multiple parts of the players game is ignored, for the more capable player it’s his other pros, and for the less capable player it’s his cons.

If Melo only had 80% on MJ’s tenaciousness and focus on defense. Offensively, Melo was unstoppable, but his defense was sus. Being an elite 2-way player takes A LOT of focus, energy and peak conditioning.

Most underrated aspect of Melos game is his strength, I feel like MJ got Melo to really see that within his own game… The reason melo would get to his spots is the combo of both his quick first step and his strength to create space and get a clean shot off. Staymelo ! 👌🏽

Melo had a deeper offensive bag than Lebron, but he didn’t have that insane athleticism of Bron or defensive intensity. Only player who had Bron’s athleticism in that era was Vince and D Rose. Blake and Dwight had the hops, but not the speed and lateral quickness. If you give Melo Bron’s athleticism and Bron Melo’s, we’re seeing a much different story.
