Many folks looking into dog food options have asked me to review Carna4. So finally here it is. Canine nutrition is what we are after, not pet food marketing. How does Carna4 measure up?

Thank you, Glenn, for all you are doing to help get the truth out to everyone! And same to DocRea! The majority of my 4 little dogs’ diets is hills. Bloodwork looks great, all looks super! They do get bites of fresh food here and there, but more like as treats. Happy that everyone’s health is perfectly on track here, it’s a relief not having any more urinary or digestive issues! Looking forward to your next video!

I find this so interesting. I don’t have a doggie but it’s very important to learn what excess nutrients do to the kidneys. Dr. Rea used the analogy of hard water. And she’s right. Excess minerals is very hard on the kidneys.

Thank you for continuing to teach us! I have just learned about sodium metahexaphosphate in foods like Eukanuba for good dental health .I like what I’m hearing from others about how the teeth stay much cleaner as I do struggle with dental health my little dogs despite a water additive and brushing several times a week. Also how does Eukanuba stack up, let’s say the small breed adult, to Hills Small/Mini adult?

Hey there! I was wondering if it is a good idea to do mixed feeding. It’s the same product essentially, pro plan puppy small breed dry and pro plan puppy canned split evenly. Is there any harm in mixing forms?
@StephanieStoudt-uv8nv
@StephanieStoudt-uv8nv Ай бұрын
From what I understand reading and listening to board certified veterinary nutritionists, you should not mix different brands. Each brand is formulated with amount of nutrients to meet optimal standards. But each brand is formulated differently. If you want to mix, mix same formula, same brand wet and dry

See, this is why I am frustrated when she told me to convert dry to wet when I asked for either of you to please give me the nutritional values of the Nutrisource canned wet Beef & Rice dog food. I am not trained in anything pet food (except the ones I know are bad), and that includes knowing how to convert dry to wet. You, Glenn, told me just to watch her video as she did a review on Nutrisource, but again, it was their dry dog food. Okay, I am not asking again, just stating exactly what you are doing that I am not trained or capable of doing so. So there, lol. I do appreciate what you do for us all though, so thank you for your expertise and honesty.

@@sarahwheeler52 True, but I won't understand what are good numbers and what isn't. Again, I am not trained in dog/cat nutrition and the numbers and values would mean nothing to me. He loves the food, so I just hope the food is as good as he loves it. I'll just keep on giving him this food. It's just that he was so sick when we got him at one year of age, and after two years, I want to make sure he's getting what his health needs.

Also if you ask the pet food companies can you please convert their wet cat foods youre feeding write teh name etc then ask Convert to Dry Matter (DM) then you can use this chart aswell. Get a pen write this down this is the percentages for dry kibble. Per 100g Kibble around 1 cup. Protein- 15-30% Fat - 10-20% Fiber - < 5% Calcium - 50 - 100% Phosphorus - 40 - 80% Sodium - 20 - 40% Chloride - 30 - 60% Vitamin - E - > 400 Vitamin - C - > 100 The % shouldnt go over these amounts especially if you have a senior dog for Calcium & Phosphorus, stay under these % if you have an aging senior dog, you'd be surprise how high some kibbles Calcium & Phosphorus % is 😫.

@@Sue-Roxy Thank you, Sue-Roxy. Since it is wet matter he's getting, I'll ask them for numbers for wet and go from there. Our Vet was of no help; another reason I'm frustrated because those that know how (although I know the Vet didn't know), said they would help and both are too busy, so I'll get it figured out. You're a peach for reaching out and helping, Sue. Thank you, again!

this food was ridiculously hard! Like rocks!! I had to get a refund because I was worried my pets would literally crack a tooth on it. The pieces did not absorb water easily either. Apparently they sell a "soft" version but I didn't know I needed to order that to not receive rocks.... In my opinion, a pet food hard enough to hurt someone as a projectile should not be sold to anyone. It was so weird.

Glenn, I was advised 30 years ago that you should feed your dog all they can consume in 20 minutes (adding or taking away) once a day. With the exception of one GSD that fell to a hemangio sarcoma at the age of 9, my other 4 GSDs lived past the age of 12. Your thoughts on this feeding schedule?
@PetFoodPuzzleGuy
@PetFoodPuzzleGuy Ай бұрын
Just_Klaatu, I’m really no expert on feeding practices. Each animal is a bit different. The important thing is that you are feeding in a way that maintains a lean body condition. My two small dogs are finicky while all the big dogs I had ate anything gratefully. Some self monitor while others would eat the whole bag!

Studies show 2/3 of apparently "complete" dry dog food (and 94% of complete canned food) sold in the UK today fail to meet the MINIMUM standards set out by the industry (the measure being a dog will get to the end of a 6mth food trial and have normal blood values).
@PetFoodPuzzleGuy

well that's horrible stats! it would take a really bad food to affect blood values within 6 months. I thought Europe had stricter rules than the US.

@@PetFoodPuzzleGuyMy dog experienced nutritional deficiencies whilst being fed a dry food claiming to be complete and balanced with no added synthetics. Her nails were so brittle, they were like confetti. Her dementia got worse as her balance went completely off and she was urinating in the house more. I contacted the company asking for a detailed nutritional breakdown, and it turns out, the food was low in vitamin b12 and threonine according to FEDIAF guidelines. They still stand by the fact that their food is complete and balanced, though. Funny how her symptoms resolved themselves when I switched her food to something *actually* balanced. 🙄

I found your channel the other day. I have been one of those that believe Hills, RC, Purina, etc, are like feeding your pets food equivalent to junk food. I'm starting to rethink is. Im going to overlook the ingredients and rather review the nutrient analysis and will be testing Hills Perfect Weight for small breeds on my Chi for starters. He needs to lose probaly 2lbs. What's interesting is that Hills provides all the nutrient right on the bag, but all these other brands it really takes digging to find all the information, which is suspect. Plus, you are right there is so many marketing gimmicks to get people to buy the product. I also have a GSD who has struggled with food allergies for years. He was on RC HP for several years and thrived on that. I now have him on Merrick Raw Coated Chicken and he does great on that but I dont know the entire nutrient profile and now trying to find out. I am probably going to change him over to a Hills Senior formula, or if necessary, their prescription HP if necessary. The Merrick one is the only non-RX food I've been able to feed him. He reacts to almost everything else if fed more than a couple weeks. This is all very interesting...Everyone IS so focused on ingredients and not the nutrients provided and i just assumed if the ingredients were good so wete the nutrients. I think ultimately the proof is in the results, both healthy weight, muscle mass, and bloodwork. I'm so curious how my Chi will do and then next my GSD. Thank you for your content!

Sarah, thanks for the comments! Welcome to the Nutrition Mission! My ZuZu has done really well on the Perfect Weight and Joint. So why did you come off the RC HP if it worked so well? Hills ZD is very similar. Hills has a diet for environmental allergies called Derm Complete. I’ve seen all of them work well, though none 100%

@@PetFoodPuzzleGuy To be honest, it was because I felt RC had terrible ingredients and felt it wouldn't be good for him long term. Just swept up in the "good ingredients" , natural and fresh food craze. I recently tried some of the dehydrated food from Honest Kitchen thinking it would work and was really healthy. I was determined to get him off kibble, even looking at Farmer's Dog, Just Food for Dogs, etc. Unfortunately, the HK set off a terrible bout of itching and hotspots after a couple of weeks of feedings, plus yeasty and inflamed ears. 😔. He's finally on the mend getting rid of everything and back on Merricks for now. I probably should just leave him on what works, but I still may consider trying Hills 7+ in the near future. Glad to hear ZuZu is doing well on Perfect Weight plus Joint! Hopefully my Benny does too!! 🙂

would you consider covering some cheap brands that are popular but also not WSAVA compliant? Mainly brands owned by J M Smuckers and Post, like Meow Mix and 9Lives for cats, or Ol' Roy, Kibble n Bits, Gravy Train etc for dogs. I think we probably already expect those brands aren't the best, but if they can give you the numbers it would still be interesting to see how they compare.

I'm curious, as to why there is a rise in all these kindney, diabetes, cancer, diseases etc... in our pets aren't due to years of consuming all pet foods that have the "accepted nutritional values", most of which would take years to manefest & diagnose. I understand that there are no clinical trials on these new trends of "no grains, air dried, freeze dried raw, and raw feeding" most of which focuses on higher protein, minimally processed products but my point is are our pets are getting sick from years of consuming traditional name brand dog foods which have been on the market way prior to the new trends I mentioned above. Many of which have only hit the market for a few years. Also, does anyone have current scientific data of pets health consuming these new trend dog foods?

Dogs are living longer due to better access to veterinary care, better nutrition and leash laws. The average lifespan of a dog in the 1960s and 1970s was 8 years before leash laws were introduced.

Pedigreed dogs are seeing a rise in cancers and autoimmune diseases because of closed studbooks. Cause of this is lack of genetic diversity in the MHC complex and the dog leukocyte antigen (DLA). Average inbreeding co-efficient inn a breed is 25%. Most livestock are bred with an open studbook.

@@ZaryaTheLaika I don’t know what kind of breeders you know, but that is also not true, we have extended lives of many breeds due to selective breeding. We don’t like to see a breeding done with a co efficiency of over 19% typically, but in my breed we average anywhere from 2%-15% which is very acceptable and our dogs don’t come down with cancer or kidney issue. A friend of mine who is also a reputable breeder has a dog that just came down with some liver issues at 18 years old, which is to be expected at such an old age. I have a 20 year old in my house with no cancer and no kidney issue….. a 15 year old with no cancer or kidney issue.
