There are more than a few KZfaq channels devoted to pet food and canine/feline nutrition. With my 34 years experience in the pet food business, especially veterinary therapeutic diets, it's impossible for me to not respond to some of them. The Dog Nutritionist has a lot to say about fresh food and so called processed food. Most of it I totally disagree with! My hope is pet parents will try and not just believe everything they hear, especially when people are selling a product or service. I am not selling anything and no one is paying me a dime.

It was actually the The Dog Nutritionist that "woke me up" so to speak, in regards to how faddy dogfood had gotten. I downloaded his recipe pdf only to get to the end and realise that a perfect pet food needed a supplement that only he sold. So I started researching more and realised that a lot of what seemed "common sense" as far was pet food is actually not very sound advise and that as far as science is concerned the demonised pet foods are actually the better ones.

I'm not anti kibble. It just makes sense to me that a balanced fresh food diet or some fresh foods would be better than kibble. Everything all the nutritionist say is backed by fact. They break the foods/ingredients down to the nutrients and explain the proven benefits of those nutrients. Two years ago I started adding some fresh foods to my older dogs Farmina. Immediately his coat and skin was soft and silky, his bad breath went away, he was more active. Eventually he wouldn't eat the kibble. I went all fresh. All his allergy symptoms went away. No skin and ear issues. No over production of yeast. He's thriving on fresh verses kibble. I don't know what your credentials are. I think you said you were a sales rep for Hills. I look at Hills ingredient panel and it looks like mostly corn products. It just doesn't make sense to me.

@PetFoodPuzzleGuy Thank you. After my senior dog had a TIA in July last year , she will only eat kibble of the supposed horrible brands. Kibbles and bits and purina dog chow. She won't touch most canned except tiki dog, cesar and some weruva. She does get 1/2 pound raw . If at all possible can u do review on kibbles and bits and purina dog chow. I feel guilty feeding this but she won't eat a lot of stuff including home made. 😕 I saw the review u did on pedigree but she won't touch that either. Lol. So I thought maybe u can review 3 or 4 low cost kibbles and to include kibbles and bits and purina dog chow. I also supplement with omegas. So overall she seems well. For all of you kibble lovers, this is from the Small Animal Clinical Nutrition guide Page 376 (the Hill's Bible): "cats conserve total body water by forming highly concentrated urine, such concentrated urine is undesirable in the prevention and treatment of feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD). Increased water intake is useful for managing urolithiasis by reducing the urinary concentration of urolithforming minerals. To date, of all treatments evaluated, feeding MOIST food (>60% of calories) was the only one associated with a statistically significant decrease in recurrence of clinical signs in cats with feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC)"
@PetFoodPuzzleGuy
@PetFoodPuzzleGuy 9 ай бұрын
Ed, you need to read that whole book! I have an older edition signed by the three main contributors, including Dr Mark Morris Jr! That’s how nerdy I am! But in 2013 Michigan State and MN Utility Center did a one year study on FIC with client owned cats. The owners could pick dry or canned. They measured each clinical sign and how long each episode lasted. Amazingly, there was an 89% reduction in clinical signs. And that diet was Feline CD. What’s amazing is Hills then added L Tryptophan and Casein to reduce stress, which most vets feel is responsible for Idiopathic Cystitis. Canned CD Stress is perhaps the very best overall cat food a person could feed. I’m all ready to drop dry fir cats and go with canned, but not homemade raw! So no T shirt for you?
@edschulhof6303
@edschulhof6303 9 ай бұрын
@@PetFoodPuzzleGuy That you have Dr. Morris' autograph is great. He did a lot for pet health. I only need to read the chapters on feeding cats, 19-24 and Chapter 46, Feline Lower Urinary Tract Diseases. The main point of all your videos is that the levels of protein, calcium, phosphorus, sodium and urine pH are all that matter regarding protecting the kidneys of dogs and cats. Dogs will drink enough water to be healthy. A cat won't. If all a cat gets is dry food, where does it get the water it needs? That cats hold concentrated urine doesn't help the kidneys. The paragraph after my original quote states that increasing a cat's moisture intake will cause it to urinate more. I have told you that I feed my cats some canned cat food. Mostly they get boiled chicken thighs and raw ground beef. Bone broth with all of it. I figure I am covering all the bases, in case one of them turns out to be wrong.
@PetFoodPuzzleGuy
@PetFoodPuzzleGuy 9 ай бұрын
@@edschulhof6303 as I’ve said before, I can’t argue with you. Makes total sense. If I had a cat I’d feed canned CD Stress and feel confident I am covering the bases. But for those too cheap or lazy to feed canned, let’s make sure their cats get the best they can. It’s been years now but I remember hills stating that even our urinary dry diets outsold the canned by quite a bit. I’m sure even then the nutritionist was saying canned was better. The shift ti cabs and the invention of Stews has changed that. You and I just disagree on certain ingredients you feel are inappropriate, that’s all. What size shirt do you want? Lol!

The days dog has no baths I use baby wipes & wipe my girl down after she been outside & has rolled on grass, grass is one of her allergens the nut, she is allergic too grass, also at night bed time, get a few baby wipes wipe dog down. People always blame the food making the dog itch & scratch & alot of times itchy skin, paws is environment allergies, also vet has your vet done a skin scrap?? for Skin Infections?? I can see how you think the pet food companies try to meet the needs of pets. That is where your heart is. But they also need to make profits, and corners get cut. So which companies have the most integrity? I feel like it’s not the mainstream ones like Purina, but as a consumer I don’t really know. From my perspective, at least with a fresh food I can SEE the ingredients and even if I read what’s in them, it looks good to me. Kibble MEETS the needs, but so does McDonalds. How are we to not get duped by either type? I love your videos but I always end up with more questions. 😊
@PetFoodPuzzleGuy
@PetFoodPuzzleGuy 9 ай бұрын
I really appreciate your comments. If you’ve watched my videos you already know the answer to the question Dies the company have integrity. It’s as simple as look at the minerals. It’s too easy for companies to use low quality meat sources while looking good. The excessive minerals don’t lie. You can look at fresh j gradients and feel confident but you have to feed all those ingredients without any idea if the nutrients provided are optimal. I’ve been surprised making these videos, discovering Ian’s dog food and their cat food was much healthier than I thought. Purina makes some pretty low quality food and then I discover a really good one. It’s just the nutrients that matter. It’s hard these days to trust any company’s integrity anymore. I don’t trust much if anything anymore. Just relax and ask any questions and I’ll do my best!

There’s a European version of ACVN which is the ECVCN European College of Veterinary Comparative Nutrition. I’m actually surprised they’re now calling meat meals “fillers” I previously thought they only consider corn wheat and soy fillers. It really infuriates me how he asserts that dogs will live longer on fresh diet when he provides zero evidence for that. Also, you could see how he’s not a real nutritionist the way he says processed meats lose their effectiveness instead of saying words like bioavailable etc… You know what makes me laugh the most? It’s that these people who bash the big brands don’t know that they’re actually using their science! All those who say antioxidants, prebiotics, fibers, omegas are important and want to add them to their fresh diets are using knowledge produced by the big brands but somehow these brands are “bad”.
