I like the way Max adjusts to Albrecht's suggestions. Not too quick, not too slow. That's learning.

How can you not like Albrecht Mayer and his ability to teach? Young Mr. Blair is also an excellent student, has a wonderful tone and enormous potential. These videos are worth their weight in gold!

I love how nice Albrecht Mayer is! I'm a clarinetist and the thought of taking masterclasses with Stanley Drucker truly frightens me.

What I love about these videos is how they show what is necessary to be a world-class musician. I would classify myself as an above-average musician (majored in music in college). Basically, I'm good enough that people that are not musicians think I'm much better than I am. And they sometimes ask if I ever did or would audition for a professional orchestra and I have to explain to them how I'm not close to good enough for that. I look at these types of players the same way I do professional athletes. 1) There are some people that are just physically able to do things that I could never do. They just have innate abilities far beyond the average person. But also, 2) They have an obsessive understanding of their "sport" and work extremely hard. Both of those things have to be present. Because some people are extremely gifted but waste their abilities because they don't do the work. And some people work extremely hard, but ultimately just don't have the ability. These videos are great to show young players that seem to have the physical abilities and then the masters help them see just how obsessive they need to be in order to be great. And it's helpful for those of us average and slightly above average musicians because it hopefully pushes us to get the most out of our own abilities, whatever they may be. That's why even as I trombone player and composer, I have watched every oboe, violin, cello, and whatever other masterclasses are posted. They all make me better.

Max's tone is really excellent - on par with the world's great oboists. The highest notes in particular have a brilliant core, or bite, to them.

I know nothing about the oboe, or music for that matter. But he is a wonderful master.😁

The student is technically very strong... but its clear what Albrecht is trying to do here and thats get some emotion and dynamism out of him. He just seems very stiff and robotic (both in his colour and his physical posture). Of course its not easy playing in front of a master... but you have to put more passion into your playing to get to higher levels.

Beautiful! What does Mr. Mayer mean at 3:30 when he talks about reading in 440? I immediately think 440 Hz (middle C), but don't understand how that would make sense.
