A new chief of a "Culture House" is planning to hold a terribly boring New Year concert. A group of young amateur actors are doing their best to liven up the concert.
Obviously, no one wants to change the program with only a few hours before the show, much less to replace it with something so boring. So everyone teams up in order to prevent Ogurtsov from getting to the stage. They manage to trap Ogurtsov by any means necessary so that the acts can perform their scheduled pieces, and celebrate New Year's Eve as originally planned.

It should be. Mosfilm was a state funded enterprise. They had considerable resources.

What a wonderful film! Great satire, great musical numbers, and what color! The film was also released until the title CARNIVAL IN MOSCOW.

This is an excellent movie and I grew up with it since I was a child, I wish the English subtitle translation was a bit more literal to the Russian text. It is sad «я и сам шутить не люблю и людям не дам» was translated to “I don’t joke at all” when “I don’t like to joke at all and I won’t let people do it either” would be much more conducive of the humour in that line.

Translation indeed is very awkward and incorrect, for instance at 55:33: '"..Fanfan la Tulipe with Onegin, Romeo with a musketeer" was translated as "Flowers from Onegin and from a musketeer". Seems like a translator had no clue about cultural icons of 1950s, such as 'Fanfan la Tulipe' which was quite famous character of the eponymous film from 1952.

@@perevalex I’m not aware of cultural icons in the 50s at the time either (but I’m impressed that others are still interested) however I’m not even complaining about that, literally most if not all the meanings are changed

I've just read in VK that there was a sequel "Карнавальная ночь 2, или 50 лет спустя" ('Carnival Night 2 or Fifty Years Later'). It would be great to see that film.
