Carnival's newest upcharge restaurant, Il Viaggio is put to the test on the inaugural sailing of the Carnival Venezia. Follow along on a tour of the menu, diving into multiple dishes during the first night of service.
The restaurant removes line favorite, Cucina del Capitano and replaces it with a fancier version of an Italian Restaurant. Il Viaggio occupies the familiar space where Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse | Brewhouse sits on the other Vista-class ships. The decor was well thought out and the space is intimate.
The food was a tour of Italy. Starting off with drinks and breads (both of which were delicious). After completing those courses, it was on to the Antipasti, or was it the Zuppa/Insulate? The kitchen staff sent out dishes out of order accidentally, but it wasn't a big issue for us. We just had to remind ourselves that this was their first night of service!
The Antipasti had some hits and some misses whereas the Zuppa/Insulate was good all around. By the time we got to the Secondi, we were ready to see what this restaurant could do! Both meals were good, but one of them definitely won us over!
The final course, the Dolce, was the icing on the cake (ironic, isn't it?)! We tried several different options and were not disappointed!

We’re sure they’ve been working through the initial jitters across this entire 15-day cruise. Either way, it’ll be a unique experience for you compared to the dining venues on all the other Carnival ships!

Great minds think alike! It was definitely a very different experience than what we were expecting. Overall, not mad for having tried it and hopefully the food/service has been improving since the inaugural cruise.

Surely you'll be fine! The experience is still brand new, so there are definitely kinks to work out. By September, it should be a well-oiled machine with minimal issues!

Thank you for your honest opinion. I am weighing the option of picking this restaurant. We already booked the Steakhouse and was considering adding this one too. Did you try the steakhouse?

We have not had the steakhouse on the Venezia and currently don't have plans to. One upcharge restaurant is enough for us for one cruise! Hopefully when you set sail, the crew will be in a better routine and the service and food will be more consistent and aligned with expectations for the cost.

Prices have doubled going from Costa to Carnival, for $50 on Costa you eat a 22oz rib-eye at the steakhouse or for 25$ you can get the all you can eat sushi. I'm always shocked to see how willing Americans are to pay such high prices compared to Europeans.

We do agree that it's quite expensive. It's not often that we participate in the upcharge dining options since there's so many dining establishments included in the cruise fare. We HAD to check out this venue since it is brand new and to share our honest thoughts on the space and menu.

I'm stingy when it comes to trying specialty restaurants so I was instantly turned off when I saw the price tag. I didn't see enough for me to consider this one. Some of that also could just be me and not really knowing what a lot of this stuff is and being a picky eater. Thanks for the honest review.

Haha. We had trouble pronouncing the names of the dishes as well, as you could see throughout the video. We did do a little research (as much as we were able to) ahead of the cruise to figure out what some of the dishes were, and thankfully the menu lists all ingredients in English so it removes the guessing game.

We thought it was one of our top 3 meals on board, even liked it better than the CHEFS TABLE. (which we did not like that much).

While we weren't able to track down an official answer for the two venues (and haven't had much luck getting a response post cruise), here's what we were told on board: It's best to let Carnival know ahead of time of any allergies or intolerances so that they can prepare for the sailing. Once on board, the crew member we spoke to recommended talking to the maître d as well. The chefs in each of the venues are specifically trained to support allergen requests, gluten-free options, and other special dietary needs. With that said, we could not get a specific answer to individual dishes or items that would be gluten-free. If we do end up getting better guidance, I'll come back here and update the reply. -Mark
