On paper, every American has the right to vote and - thanks to the Second Amendment - to bear arms. But in reality, says Carol Anderson, both these rights are undermined by the racism which is so deeply rooted in American society. And that, in turn, undermines democracy.
Anderson is a professor of African-American studies at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, and an influential voice on civil and voting rights in the U.S. She will be joining us on Monday May 30th to talk about her two most recent books, 'The Second: Race and Guns in a Fatally Unequal America' and 'One Person, No Vote'. The Second Amendment, she contends, is not about guns, but about anti-Blackness. And the Fifteenth Amendment, which gave every American the right to vote no matter their “race, color or previous condition of servitude”, is under assault.

Carol Anderson, I have always wanted to ask a question, but I didn't know who until I watched your videos. Carol, the white man, has met so many other races in our world. Why is it that for the last 600 or 700 years we have met white people? Why are we such an existential threat to them? What is this fear of the black man, and where is it coming from?

Miss Carol. You spoke on guns and vote. But you never mentioned, no where of this big problem against the black man:. Richardson v Ramirez ,. 418: 24. But started in 1870s.

Felony disenfranchisement this law stops black people from voting for the rest of their life but was change a little so that felonies can't vote after they do about in Texas 5 years but to own a fire arms that law ban one for life and that decision came down from the US supreme Court and mostly all states adopted that law. Example being if you was convicted of a felony for maybe a drug possession 20 years old and now you 45 you never been in trouble after that you still are not entitled to own a firearm so how can a man protect his home against racist racism without being able to what I'm going to run outside with a stick in my hand and title to own a firearm so how can

The US police don’t even know what the first amendment rights are legally we do not have to present an ID we don’t have to let searches happen I don’t consent to searches is one thing you have to say there’s no legal right to demand an identification am I being detained what crime do you suspect that I’m committing or I intend to commit and you must articulate that crime all of these are first amendment rights in the United States it is illegal to photograph anything visible in public from a public location these and other laws are not taught to policeman and too many policeman or cops are young kids they don’t really even know what their law is that’s just some of the problems we have here in America you can see many KZfaq videos that are called auditing the audit another words videotaping police when they stop a car and demand identification in public there’s no guarantee of privacy so you can legally videotape anything that can be observed from a public location cops stop brown and black skinned people and they say it’s not legal to videotape but there’s noExpectation of privacy in public view are cops on the street need to be educated but no the administration doesn’t want that to happen so that’s one example of a non-freedom of freedom in America thank you

I appreciate the history lesson but that one of my favorite race hustlers carefully selects many tragic events from this country‘s past to keep the racial fire burning nice and hot in today’s society it’s not ethical in my opinion. If this were only a history lesson then it would be fine. Have we not experienced progress. do we need continued progress, absolutely. I think the approach by so-called scholars such as Anderson, D’Angelo and Dyson unfortunately Phil‘s too manyWhite mines with anger and hostility. I suppose, what do you expect when you attack whiteness. it’s too bad these so-called scholars had to hijack the empirical process in an attempt to wage their war on straight white men and white people generally.. Great mission but flawed strategy.
