Though we really did try to make it
Something inside has died
And I can't hide and I just can't fake it

I'm a 47 year old construction worker and I heard this song for the first time two years ago and I cried. I was alone in my truck, driving to work, so I had time to dry my eyes by the time I got there and told everyone that I was doing great, even though this song tore into my emotions!

Beautiful, love what you wrote , & publicizing it - takes some guts. ❤️ I haven't been able to get this song out of my head this past wk, (my not so subconscious at work, no dout), so just listened to it here for 1st time in 20+ yrs. I can't think of a song w/a higher emotional impact that nails the sorrow & loss of falling out of love more poignantly.

Another song that I could relate to in that sense would be the song "At Seventeen" by Janis Ian. The lyrics to that song basically just has Janis pouring out her emotions of never being accepted by the popular crowd when she was in high school. ~Dutch

This is possibly the greatest pop song ever released. Catchy as hell, beautifully orchestrated, the lyrics are completely straightforward, conversational; no allusions or metaphors or 'deeper meanings' implied. It's just all out there, honest and raw, very adult and mature examination of the end of a romance.

This was "Album of the Year" when I graduated High School in 1971. I'll be 70 before I know it, yet this song STILL takes me back to a very bittersweet time in my life! An incredibly special "Best Friend' (whom I'm still "Best Friends" with to this day, albeit separated by 3000+ miles), cruising in my '71 Mazda RX-2 and paying just 25 cent a gallon for gas, a girl I was MADLY in love with, (who died all too young from a brain tumor), all the while living in a very tumultuous and emotionally destructive home environment that was 'fueled' nightly by all too much alcohol. To quote from Dickens' "A Tale of Two Cities", "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..." Memories that cause me to smile through my tears.....

That is an awesome, AND sad tale about the girl. Now... tell us an upbeat story, about the woman who gave you 5 kids, and how you wouldn't change that outcome - even if you could go back in time and prevent the death of a girl you once had feelings for. I had many girlfriends since I was a kid, and I loved everyone of them (even though moving every few years, because my dad was in the Navy... took me away from them). I wish I could get in touch with every one of them, just to see how they're doing today, but I only remember their first names... so it isn't really possible (we'd also be in our 50's, now... who knows if all of them are still around?!).

@@googleaccount1860 Wow! How 'prophetic' as I did marry an incredibly GREAT gal who has given me 5 wonderful kids, + 2 'Bonus Kids' that she was raising on her own when we met. I would have changed 1 thing about that though, in that I wished we'd met 10 years earlier, so that I could have hopefully averted the damage caused to her 2 kids (NOT her fault) by not having a dad around . Thanks for the reminder to be THANKFUL for what I HAVE been blessed with!!

God bought us back together and we got remarried again we were married for 54 years. Iam 82 years old now and my beloved husband has gone to be with our havenly father. And today one off son's came up the stairs and he was hearing music on he's phone and they were playing that song. I hadn't heard it for a long time and it bought tears to my eyes.

Yes you are correct. To my knowledge Carol, Joni Mitchell and the other women songwriter singers of that era never ever wore revealing clothing, had dancers behind them and pyrotechnics on the stage when they performed. They just walked to center stage and performed. A lovely and grand time to be young and alive.

I was a student teacher, I sat in my car full of trepidation before I stood in front of the class to teach them English. This tune played as I summoned the courage to walk into the school. I am now retired and 68 years of age and recovering from surgery for cancer. I ended up teaching troubled lads in Liverpool and had the privilege to be best man at the wedding of one of my lads who made a success of his life. Unfortunately I stood at the graveside of one of my lads who was out of reach and took 8 bullets to the chest. This tune will always resonate as I embarked on being a part of the best profession on the planet.

Song's like a cup of coffee... Could wake you up OR put you right back into your slumber... I feel the triumphs and failures of the past while also feeling great opportunity for the future... I've realized much has an end. And usually you don't control it. I've learned to take what I can get while it's present. This song is a great reminder of that. Times can be good and can be bad. And yet despite how bad a relationship or situation can turn that will never take the good away that you got out of it. Perfect example - jail was hell but I did learn a lot about myself and the people I share society with. Would I do it again, absolutely not but it was a valuable experience.

Keyspoet27 Right there with you. I got this album not long after it came out, mostly for "I Feel the Earth Move," since the single had come out right before the 1971 Sylmar/Newhall earthquake, and became an instant hit in L.A. I loved the entire album. I brought it over to my dad's one afternoon, and he enjoyed it as well, and some years later confided to me that this song was the one that he felt captured the ending of his marriage to my mom most perfectly. Interestingly, the song that always reminded me of their split was "Overs," by Simon and Garfunkel, but I'm not sure that he had even heard that song, much less knew it. Still love this album, and Bookends, and SO MANY MORE!!!

Melodically, this song is epic. Lyrically it takes you on a journey with a woman realizing the end of her romance within three minutes. This is an incredible realization of a breakup song. She goes from being stuck in bed, to realizing they don't have any fun anymore, to accepting the end within the context of the song. Even the answer vocal goes from "we can't make it" to "we can't make it NOW." This is a masterpiece by Carole King and a unique song in it's context. So many emotions within four minutes, not to mention amazing chords and musicianship.

What strikes me most about this piece is how Carole is not a piano virtuoso by any means, but a SONGWRITER who knows how to put a lyric to chords and melody with the best of them, and to convey all the emotions within. I'm so thankful to have been raised on this beautiful music ; it's the only joyful memory I have. (My mother is a Sociopath with Narcissistic Personality Disorder, so my childhood and that if my three siblings was horrific! But there is comfort, beauty and joy in this music. ). ❤

On this day in Music - 10 Feb 1971 American singer-songwriter Carole King released her second studio album Tapestry. It is one of the best-selling albums of all time, with over 25 million copies sold worldwide. The lead single from the album 'It's Too Late'/'I Feel the Earth Move' spent five weeks at No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The cover photograph was taken at King's Laurel Canyon home. It shows her sitting in a window frame, holding a tapestry she hand-stitched herself, with her cat Telemachus at her feet.

I amold was amazed that there are people who dont know her, but I guess younger people. I grew up in the golden age of rock. This woman is in the R & R hall of fame its not just the songs she chose to sing but she wrote samny other songs for other groups. She is an amazing woman, she saved James life, she wrote for the Shreilles, Little Eva, the Monkess, Boby Vee, the drifters so many other groups, such an amazing woman all of her best is with james Taylor, and then took time to make her own albums, one the te most gifted muscian ever!!!!

I met her in the late 70's when she came to my parents house in Boise. She graciously played a benefit concert for my father in 1980. She sent me a song I played at my mother's funeral. One of the great ladies of rock and roll.

This song takes me back to a time when I was dating a really nice guy. We use to hear this song all the time when we were in the car, and since I loved to sing, I sang along with the song. One day he asked me if I was trying to tell him something. Maybe subconsciously I was, because I broke up with him not too long after because I wasn’t ready to settle down. I ended up a few years later marrying a wonderful man, and we’ve been together since. But anytime I hear this song, I think of that old boyfriend. I love how some songs can bring back a memory of a specific time in my life.
