Carolina Crown's hornline is notoriously good, but this year they were on another level even for their standards. They even got a perfect brass score which is insane. I feel like this show belongs in a brass music textbook or something.

First of all thank you so much for the reaction! This one will definitely be watched By the drum core world as this show as you mentioned from reading comments before hand is viewed by many as perfection and is used quite often I high school band instructors as a visual presentation of what perfection looks like which the show has in spades. I think I am most happy that even though we’ve only been on this journey for about a month you’re already picking up on things that it takes some years if ever to figure out😁. For example you said near the end of your reaction that you were having a horngasm And that he thought the horns were flawless Which was not just your opinion but also the opinion of the judge is that night as The horn line Scored a perfect score that night at finals Which at the time had never been done in any caption. The overall score was the second highest score ever as of 2013 only surpassed by the Cavaliers 2002 which is a part of it my next series I’m sending to you which will be very special to me as you will be seeing The Cavaliers 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006. While the Cavaliers won world championships in 1992 and 1995, they absolutely dominated in the first decade of the 2000s going undefeated from the end of 2000 through the end of 2003 which is a crime considering 2003 is probably the best show out of all it was definitely controversial when they lost on finals night I’m including it because it is part of the dream decade and Like the two you have watched in the last two days each introducing something very different then made them stand out, 2003 cavaliers did something the blew peoples mind Which was close in the show out in the exact reverse of how they open the show. Not only will you see great horn lines from The Cavaliers but their general effect, percussion, color guard and especially their visual or drill design which Was created by Michael Gaines who is a legend in the drum corp community. As an alumni member of The Cavaliers, I have to say it was a decade to be extremely proud of and I did not have to show anybody else because they were honestly that good. As you can tell from what I have sent so far, I am a fan of excellent drum corps shows from whoever puts them out. Another thing you are correct about is the consistency of Carolina crown as they have finished in the top five every year since 2009 maybe 2008 which includes tomorrow’s reaction you will be doing to Carolina Crown 2011 “Rach Star” which as you will see is a play on words as they are doing the music of Rachmaninoff and queen and it’s a little different type of show as it is definitely a let loose blow the crowd away and have fun and not quite as perfect as what you’ve seen from them a couple of times. Don’t give me wrong as their color guard is amazing and the overall show is extremely gratifying not to mention some people say actually a lot of people say it might possibly be the best beginning of a show as the announcer times it perfectly Right as Carolina crowns horn line does best which is blow you out of your seat with their first note. So just to close this out, you did just witness perfection And while there have been two shows since then from the Blue Devils, Everyone that does not live on the West Coast will still tell you the 2013 Carolina crown is the best technically of any DCI show in history! Have an awesome evening my friend talk to you tomorrow👍😁

The Cavaliers shows in the early 2000's were what got me interested in DCI back when I was a kid! In fact there were so many good DCI shows in the 2000's it's insane. It truly was a great decade for DCI.

So imagine this. Imagine putting the fans of all the NFL teams in one stadium together to watch the super bowl. A large part of them for the best teams. Now imagine the entire stadium giving a rousing standing ovation multiple times for the champion like you just saw. This was Carolina Crown that year. Greatness recognized.

My first live drum corps show was finals the year after this, but I went to college with a few friends who marched this show. Truly unbelievable how seamlessly executed this show was and unbelievable how vast yet tight-knit this activity is. I don’t know you but it makes me happy to see the activity make it into the eyes and ears of those who appreciate it. 6W

So, a fun fact. This one's worth posting every time I see this video anywhere. At 15:28 you have two pieces of rolling "thing" at each end of the form. These are supposed to be wormholes. The colorguard then demonstrates what happens when you pass through a wormhole,. while ALSO demonstrating what happens if you try to get from one end to the other at relativistic speeds: you slow down as you approach the speed of light, but you never get there, and you die on the way. I've no doubt at all this was intentional on the part of the design staff. 1000 kudos and as many gold stars for pulling off a totally accurate scientific illustration during a DCI show. What the actual.

I first enconteredd DCI at the Edmonton Klondike Days celebration in 1977. I had never seen anything like it - my HighSchool band was still using marching band style - frankly your group has to be HUGE to pull off this sort of sound. I'm always thrilled when I get to see some of this live. That same high school band sent 3 members after graduation to the Santa Clara Vanguard, which back in those days was unassailable in it's dominance.

(So far) Carolina Crowns only 1st place finish. To think that the hornline got a perfect score this night. 20.0 points out of 20.0 is insane. The fact that not one horn player cracked a note while playing and moving is insane. The judges found absolutely 0 mistakes with the hornline. I can't get over how perfect this show is. There's so many opportunities for each member to make even the smallest mistake. I'm so glad you got to see this one. Truly a one of a kind performance. And you nailed it. "Practice, practice, practice and God damn practice." Over the last decade, Crown has won multiple Brass titles. Even when they don't score 1st overall, their brass is always on FIRE!

Videos like this really make me think KZfaq can read my mind/look into my past; such a crazy specific-to-me suggestion, and I haven't watched any marching band videos in YEARS!! My high school hosted Carolina Crown for a competition the year they did this very show and it was SO COOL to watch them!!

Carolina Crown year after year has the best brass in DCI, but 2013 was on another level. Probably the greatest brass section in DCI history

I love it when someone with an open mind from outside "our world" of the marching arts reacts to what we do. I didn't march in this show (I aged out in 1992) but I have been involved in the drum corps activity since 1986. I have marched a total of ten seasons as well as instructed, written and judged (as well as just being a fan)... so I feel somehat qualified in pointing a few things out here for those not in the know... 1... This is in many peoples opinions (mine included) the absolute best hornline in the history of the activity. 2... Part of what makes this show so difficult from a brass perspective is spread. The hornline spends much of the showspread over a very large portion of the field. Additionally they are often far from the front sidelines. This makes listening in to each other for tuning purposes EXTREMELY difficult. Throw in the spread and distance from the drumline and reverb from an indoor stadium, and the timing is SOOOOOO difficult. They ALL have to INTENTLY watch the drum major for timing and in many cases have to account for distance by playing ahead of the beat. Again crazy hard. 3... 7:40 ... that musical line goes up and down the hornline from side to side.. it moves. Hard to tell on a video recording Thank you for your reactions. They are very refreshing and if you find yourself at a show and I evr come across you, I will buy you a beer!

If you have some time to kill I highly recommend checking out Glass’s Einstein on the Beach (which is where all the vocals are from). It’s officially an opera but there’s no plot and it’s VERY repetitive; it’s not for everyone but it’s otherworldly imho.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! For doing this reaction. This was very close to being a perfect show and I enjoyed it because I used to be a horn player and I know how difficult this is. Their predecessor, Star of Indiana, would even have a hard time pulling this off. I would love for you to react to the 1990 Star of Indiana show Belshazzar's Feast. They defeated the Blue Devils in the finals. This was Star's rise to fame.

I think a different voiceover at the end ( meaning different actual voice) wouldn't have come across as so barfingly melodramatic. The story was fine.. the vocal interpretation sucked big time. I say this as a former actor, singer, AND marching band member, 1977-1980
