Carolyn Swiszcz, a legend in West St. Paul, uses painting and video art to capture the unsung and overlooked cityscapes that shape our daily experience. A BFA from MCAD and 20 years of Minnesota living have lead Swiszcz into a unique fascination with the simultaneously arid and enchanting aspects of dilapidated storefront architecture and worn scenery.

For over a decade, every single time someone mentions West St. Paul, in any context, I gleefully show them Carolyn’s WSP video. Thank you for featuring this local artist! I’ve always wondered about the brilliant mind behind that video, and now I have a picture window into her creative work.

The building you really like on Robert Street that used to be a laundry mat- when I was a kid, it used to be a bread store for a long time. You’d walk in and it’d smell super good! Thanks for the videos and the sweet song!

Something I always envied about places like Manhattan or big coastal cities is that they have so many iconic places and symbols packed into such a small space, and they are well represented through an abundance of art. West St. Paul has always been a practical place to live but it is through artists like Carolyn Swiszcz that West St. Paulites get to feel that same representation, even as a self-aware celebration of the mundane and the ordinary. Carolyn's work motivates me not to feel as though my art should be tied to fantasy/'exotic' places when I can instead show the world what's in and around my neighborhood. Excellent video!
