I challenge myself to catch 6 winter carp in 24hrs on 6 different pop up rigs!
The Ronnie Rig has become the most popular rig of all time but I attempt to show you that there are better rigs out there.
Pop up rigs for carp fishing are many and varied but have you ever stopped to wonder why there are so many different rigs and which are the best ones and why. I attempt to prove that it doesn’t matter which rig you use as they’re all basically the same and watercraft and location are more important as you will see!

Like you w/pool for me all day long, but feel rigs are all about confidence, what ever works for you stick with, only change if it's really needed, but of course a personal preference.. Hopefully see you back on the bank soon, Tight lines 😉

Cheers fella. For me it's about a rig that's quick and easy to tie and one that holds its shape. I like a hinge stiff but the upright section always goes out of shape. The shrink tube of a withy will always keep its shape so it beats a hinge hands down for me 😉

Ive used the ronnie to good effect to be fair ,and found the hook holds pretty good. Happy to use it at somewhere like linear, fishing over bait.... but if im fishing somewhere with low lying weed id switch to a hinge stiff or a chod rig everytime. Regarding the ronnie...when you think of the amount of different components required to make the rig, its no wonder the tackle companies want us to use them... and fair play to them aswell. Its business at the end of the day👍 its down to the individual to be wise to whats the right thing to use in the situation they are faced with.... enjoying your vids simon. Tight lines 🎣🎣

Hi Simon. Really interesting video. I followed your lead and swapped pop up rigs after each bite this weekend. The Ronnie and the Stiff Hinged both hooked in the scissor as you experienced with the Ronnie, something I had not really considered before. The Withy rig, which is not used before, hooked dead centre inside the mouth. Defiantly food for thought as I had used Ronnies a lot. Will continue to experiment and will try different lead setups next to see if they make a difference; same rig , different lead setup each time. Overall I agree with your thoughts that the baiting and location are more important than the rig. Jason

Cheers mate I definitely think location is the most important thing but analysing hook holds can definitely help gain confidence in the rig you're using and I've always found a withy nails them. I might do a video on lead arrangements and see which comes out on top 👌

Good video mate 👍🏻intresting results.....with the 360 rig alot of people had this problem getting caught in the net, they eliminated this by putting a small peice of shrink tubing over the eye of the hook and shrinking it down so it didnt move off etc. Would be intresting to see if the shrink tubing actually eliminates the hook getting caught in then net!! I dont know this my self as in dont use the rig but maybe you could try it again and ser 👍🏻
@SimonDewCarpFishing
@SimonDewCarpFishing 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I actually used silicone not shrink tube and it came off so maybe shrink tube is better. I actually think there are better rigs mechanics than the 360 though. I think the hook is too low to work effectively every time but sometimes you get lucky with it and at least it always resets itself when spat out 👍
@staridwork4902
@staridwork4902 3 жыл бұрын
First and foremost great video. Appreciate the work. I get the point also, dont get too hung up on rigs, key focus is fish finding and baiting. But clearly rigs will come to play especially on high pressure venues and carp learn fast right. But i mean where you had the more looser and arguably more aggressive (damage potential) fish holds, they are large curve hooks vs stright shanks. They have been banned recently on a few local venues i fish and think for hood reason WHEN used on smaller carp. By that i mean under 30ibs. Curve hooks and high test curve rods along side a newer fisherman bullying a 15ibs fish ....will tear up a carps mouth. So yeah while your point and main message is absolutely valid. You do have a straight hook plus bent tubing vs fully cruved hook argument on this too. I think its probably the smaller carp mouths do struggle to blow out the 360 type, and it may not fully take hold vs a larger fish who have more room in their mouth. In summary. Fish size vs rig. Curve hook vs straight. My two pence ......but great work mate all this just helps the education.

Apart from that they all just pop up and can reset well !! I just ues combi rig use amneisa an suple braid hair blow back ring shrink tube kicker putty. And then just adjust size and length of them all acordinly job done botton bait rig /pop up rig all in 1

I’ve always said that carp fishing is the preserve of the over thinker. I can’t see for the life of me how the bait presentation looks any different to a carp across all these rigs. Interesting video simon and i think your dead right However i still love the ronnie/spinner rig and i cant say ive really had the issue you've had and generally hooked them in bottom lip or deeper inside mouth. Think ive used all them rigs all bar the flick rig and 360 rig. And whats shocking is that despite your best effort to stop the 360 catching in the net with the shrink tubing it still happened, so it deffo wont ever put that in my armoury. But my most successful pop up rig ever would have to be the simple knotless knot rig in a solid pva bag 👍🏼👍🏼

Cheers Chris. Lots of people seem to swear by the Ronnie but I just can't seem to get consist hook holds. Even the bungy style boom that I showed a while back. Couple of points Simon on what a couple of people have said. Firstly regarding the ronnie is the size of fish you're fishing for, I've not seen any damage to bigger fish i.e. over 20lbs but can see why perhaps with smaller fish and smaller mouths it could be a problem. I can't see these so-called top anglers using the ronnie if it was harmful to fish. Secondly someone mentioned anglers don't use hairs anymore, which you don't. Tim Paisley (who? some might ask) showed me the combi-rig many, many moons ago and I still use it today for bottom baits (singles or doubles), with about a 10mm gap between hook and bait, if the fish have got their heads down it's deadly! If I'm fishing up to pads, weedbeds or snags I shorten it down to about four inches. The only other rigs I use now are the ultra D rig for wafters or snowmen and the multi rig for pop-ups which as you said saves a fortune on buying all the various bits and pieces for tying different rigs which get binned after a short time. Again as you said the most important things are location and baiting up.
@SimonDewCarpFishing

cheers for your comment and some very interesting points there. I prefer a rig that hooks in the bottom of the mouth 9 times out of ten and i just find the ronnie seems to hook them in the scissors more no matter what size of fish I’m fishing for. I also find I’ve lost quite a few on ronnies so I prefer a slightly higher pop up which I think hooks further back and more centrally in the mouth.

I agree here with what your saying fella, but In my opinion I think there is times to use different pop up rigs for instance if I was fishing just over boilies I wouldn’t opt for the 360 or multi rig but I would use them fishing over particle. But yeah as your saying location is key, doesn’t matter what you put on the last meter if the fish ain’t there you ain’t catching them 👍

For the most part I would have to agree with you that any rig presented well should catch fish. However every rig you used will have subtle differences and with these subtle differences comes an anglers confidence. That is why people end up have a favourite rig because it give them confidence. So I say find the rig you are confident with.

@SimonDewCarpFishing
@SimonDewCarpFishing 4 жыл бұрын
It makes no difference as all these rigs are the same mechanically. A withy pool rig tied the same height as a Ronnie works in exactly the same way. A hinged stiff and a withy next to each other are identical if tied the same height. A supple boom is a good edge I think as it allows the rig to go right up into the carps mouth and also it settles onto uneven lake beds and weed etc. We have to remember carp don't know the difference between rigs so it's down to mechanical factors and a curved upright section and stiff boom is the same whatever the rig is

Brilliant video and a great session, sometimes I don't catch that many fish in a 3 days 😂Anyway I think you have definitely proved a point and I agree, it doesn't really matter what rig you are using, if it is presented correctly and the fish are there you will catch. I prefer bottom baits and wafters myself using a slip D rig, a blow back rig or an IQ rig etc (obviously if it isn't weedy) I bet if you did a video using different bottom bait rigs your results would be the same!! Well done and point proved 👍 The last thing I would like to mention is, I really do not like your new alarms 😵‍💫I personally think they are ugly, very boxy, square looking and not a patch on the Delkims. Especially the new TXI-D'S which are compact, look great and are superb in build quality and technology and I believe there is not an alarm on the market to touch them, including the Fox, Nash etc everyone is trying to match or out do the Delkims but in my opinion they have not managed it yet!! I am guessing you have been paid or sponsored by the alarm company!! 🤫 There is no harm in that, Obviously Alan Blair is going to say the Nash alarms are the best and Harry Charrington will say the Fox alarms are the best etc. Remember this is only my opinion so calm down everyone before you start screaming and shouting!! 🤪😂All the best and tight lines 👍🎣🎣 and please keep these great videos coming 🤟

Dan Haydon the 360 rig is dodgy because of what happened in the video. That exact reason, caught in the net and rips the fishes mouth. The Ronnie has shrink tubing over the eye having nothing to catch the net. Making it much safer than the 360.
@SimonDewCarpFishing
@SimonDewCarpFishing 4 жыл бұрын
@@thfcdan1986 I agree mate the Ronnie is safer than a 360 but I still think there are safer rigs. The Ronnie being so low tends to hook them in the corner of the mouth which damages the joint of the jawbone. Yep, all these different rigs are just marketing scams. And I’ve been debating just about every other factor on fishing ie ground baiting for days at a time vs just throwing a few boilies out vs single baits, and none of it seems to make a shred of difference. At our local small 3 acre lake that we fish constantly, we’ve piled in 5k of hemp into one swim, glugged baits, created as much attraction as possible and not even gotten a snifter, while 10 yards further down someone’s whipping out a 20 an hour on single baits. I don’t even believe groundbait works. Watching many underwater vids I’ve never seen fish bee lining their way into a swim as if they’ve smelled/sensed something from miles away, they merely loaf around and if your bait happens to be there then that’s it. ALL LUCK

The Ronne and hair rigs were created out of necessity because the baits people were using were so inferior, the carp wouldn't take them well enough for anglers to set the hook. Carp would mouth them but rarely eat them. The solution to all of the expensive and complicated equipment is to develop a bait that carp will aggressively eat. Living in the States I have no idea how to do that for the European carp, but I have done that very thing for Common carp.

Actually hair rigs were created to hook carp better in the lips. Previously the hook was buried in the bait with the hook point covered which lead to lots of missed bited and also carp swallowing the hook. Having the hook exposed means the bait can be taken back a long way without the danger of deep hooking the fish 👌
@robertperkins923
@robertperkins923 Жыл бұрын
You're partially right, Simon has addressed where you were wrong about the hair rig. Regarding bait, it isn't that the bait is rubbish, in the case of most high attract pop ups, these are loaded with high levels of flavours and attractors, when these hit the "tastebuds" in a carps mouth it us too much and they eject it, so therefore the mechanics of most pop up rigs are based around hooking them on ejection, rarely is it because they feel the hook, because 9/10 times, if the mechanics of the rig are correct, if they feel the hook, it's the point of it and the chances are it's game over
@tomhutchinson137
@tomhutchinson137 4 жыл бұрын
I don't think that fishing on a match lake would really display the older and wiser carps ability to reject and eject certain types of rigs. Larger carp also feed in a different manner due to the size of the carp. Also with them being caught before theyre also more wary! In this situation you have lots of younger carp which I assume are heavily stocked and hence they're all competing for food and will eat anything out in front of them. Also different carp have different ways in which they feed. So if you were targeting a certain carp there may be a rig that works better. The mechanics of all these rigs will differ and wary carp that can eject and reject rigs may find that easier or harder with different rigs they come across. Ultimately this experiment was always gonna be flawed due to the fact these young hungry carp are going to eat anything you put out in front of them. Larger older carp, may have made this experiment more interesting and useful to specimen anglers.
@SimonDewCarpFishing
@SimonDewCarpFishing 4 жыл бұрын
I get what you’re saying and partly agree, but it’s February and I wanted to prove all these rigs work so I thought the best option was to fish somewhere I could get bites. To test 6 rigs on larger wary carp at any time of year and hope to catch on all of them would be nearly impossible. I think the mechanics of these rigs are basically the same if you really look at them the differences are minimal and won’t affect their effectiveness in my opinion. I just wanted to prove they work so people don’t worry so much about a rig when its very rarely down to the rig if you don’t catch

I reckon the comment you made of people following rig trends is very true. And it's often the downfall of anglers expectations in the latest wonder rig. In my experience the number one criteria when deciding which rig to use is knowing the make up of the lake bed. Is it clean/clear or silty or weedy/choddy etc. Then knowing this will lead you to knowing which rig to use to get an effective presentation. The next criteria is for how the fish feed. On some lakes the fish like to dig around and feed in the silt. A pop up in that situation would probably be ignored or treated with suspicion but a critically balanced wafter presentation would likely be readily accepted. It's all about tuning in to the lake where you are fishing. Too many anglers sit with idle rods because they don't tune in, and expect the latest wonder rig to do it all for them.

I wouldn't use Thompson's ever again! mine and a few friends bivvies ruined with it, delaminated the coating and also stained bivvies, also down the line causes rot 😬
