In June 1981, Karen and Richard released their 10th studio album, "Made In America," and made a world tour to promote it with appearances in Brazil and Germany. In November of that year, she and Richard returned home to California. Karen and her husband Tom Burris formally separated that same month. Shortly after Christmas, Karen moved to New York to begin treatment for her anorexia. She sought treatment with psychotherapist Steven Levenkron who was noted for his research into anorexia nervosa and self injury.
In April 1982, she took a two-week vacation from her treatment and returned home to California. She and Richard returned to the studio and recorded several songs, including this song, "Now." At the time of this recording, Karen was heavily anorexic. Richard says she had lost even more weight since the last time he had seen her the year before. Karen returned to New York and stayed there until November 1982. During a two-month stay in a hospital, she was fed intravenously and gained 30 pounds. She returned home for Thanksgiving that year. Although she felt that she was cured, Richard saw that she still didn't look well and he told her so. The additional weight of 30 pounds added back suddenly on a body that had been underweight for so many years further strained her weakened heart, and she died of heart failure on the morning of February 4, 1983. She was just 32 years old, a month shy of her 33rd birthday.
Following Karen's death, Richard returned to the studio and worked on his and Karen's last recordings, including two of the songs she recorded in 1982 as well as other songs from previous recording sessions over the years before. The album, "Voice of the Heart" was released in October 1983, eight months after Karen's death.
"Now" was a work lead, recorded in one take, and was intended to familiarize the musicians with the song as well as Richard's arrangement of it. After a complete music track had been recorded, Karen would have then returned to the studio and recorded new vocals for the song. But as it was, the work lead turned out to be the last song Karen ever recorded.
There's an old legend about the swan's song - how the Mute Swan (Cygnus olor) which is completely mute during its lifetime until the moment just before it dies, is said to sing one beautiful song. Over the years, listeners have commented on the lyrics of the song and knowing what we know now, wonder if perhaps Karen had had a premonition of what was to come. Indeed, "Now" can be said to have been Karen's "swan song."
Now
Now,
Now when it rains, I don't feel cold.
Now that I have your hand to hold,
The winds might blow through me
but I don't care.
There's no harm in thunder if you are there.
And now,
now when we touch, my feelings fly.
Now when I'm smiling, I know why.
You light up my world like the morning sun.
You're so deep within me, we're almost one.
And now all the fears that I had start to fade.
I was always afraid love might forget me,
love might let me down.
Then look who I found.
The winds might blow through me
but I don't care.
There's no harm in thunder if you are there.
And now, now,
now when I wake, there's someone home.
I'll never face the nights alone.
You gave me the courage I need to win,
to open my heart and to let you in.
And I never really knew how, until now,
Until now.
No, I never really knew how,
until now

When I was in Vietnam, I wrote her on a bet I wouldn't hear from her. I did, and we corresponded with each other over the next year, I was 17 and in love with her. Not just her music and her voice but the girl behind the mask, I was devastated by her death. I have been married for over 44 years and neither my wife nor my children know I have her letters because they are my private memories and when I pass away they will be buried with me.

What an amazing story, you are so fortunate. Says something about the real person that she took the time. Certainly share your pain at her passing, I was sat in my car listening to the news when I heard that she had died. I can remember the time and place like it was yesterday, sat there and and just cried, her voice and songs really do rest deeply in your soul. I’m 62 now, if one of her songs comes on the radio I still feel the emotional impact of that loss, no other artist past or present makes me feel like this. Understand completely why you have not shared the letters, if your anything like me, it shows a very vulnerable and sensitive side which you my not wish the reveal. Just imagine if your wife ‘got it’ and shared the feelings you have, could be a magical moment of understanding between you. My partner would never understand......

The crazy part is that despite her anorexia-related health problems, NONE of them affected her voice. She delivered at the top of her game no matter what she sang. There were times she looked gaunt and sickly, but that voice stayed rich and healthy. And her brother claims she did this one in ONE TAKE. THAT is awesome!

She told her band " he probably doesn't mean it"😢 Such a low self esteem,. How tragic, that her short life was such a struggle and filled with sadness. That's the deep sadness, that I think we all carry, even now 40 years after her death. The waste of such a beautiful girl , with the voice of an Angel. I love listening to her songs, but can still be moved to tears , by the fact that she suffered so much. And died so young. May she know only joy and peace, singing in Heaven. How ironic that this was her last recording

I can't fathom how I've never heard this song before today, Wed., January 11th, 2023, at 09:40 a.m. Her voice was unlike any other. Yet, *one thing which I think never gets credited enough is that the musicianship was as perfect as her voice was.* And not just her brother, but all their musicians. The music always complimented her voice So Perfectly, in such a heart-tugging way. I think it's absolutely fitting that they scrolled the musician's names at the end of the video. It's a perfect tribute to them for everything they always were for her -- & to us. 09:44 - 09:49

I sat down with my mom and us 6 including mom and dad several times a month for dinner. It also was my saddest day when we all lost her to that nervous disease when you're telling your body your ugly and fat, and she basicly starved herself from eating. There has never been and never will be again a voice like Karen Carpenter's. I think what touches people is the depth of her vocal quality. Tonally deep, crystal clear and so genuine, Karen's voice penetrates your soul. Her death at the young age of 32 was one of the music industry's greatest tragedies. Though she was certainly successful, she had much untapped potential which is evident in some of her lesser known songs like "I Can Dream, Can't I" and "Ordinary Fool." She will forever remain in the top ranks of female vocalists.

Lord it hurts to hear her again-- I loved her so much in the 70s and clearly remember the day she died, like kick in the gut-- it was too painful to listen to her music for many years and I just found out it still hurts some 35 years later. She was such a gift to humanity and I always found it incredible that she didn't think she could sing in the beginning and wanted to stick to playing the drums. But her voice was meant to be heard and no matter what people think of Richard, he made that happen. Tragic that they were so driven to be perfect-- he could handle that, but she was a wistful, gentle soul and only wanted to please people-- she gave her life to that effort. Such a short time on this earth, but look how many lives on which she had such a profound and moving effect-- very very few people can do that. Her life burned so bright that it had to burn out early. God bless, Karen, and thank you for touching my soul.

@ Rebecca C. I would respectfully disagree that Karen Carpenter's voice was never adversely affected by her illness. You can clearly hear on her last recording of the great song, "Now" that her voice had lost some degree of its' beautifully deep richness from her bulimia. As Richard Carpenter accurately pointed out, the worst thing a singer can do to her vocal cords is wretching. I disagree with Richard Carpenter when he told a caller on Larry King's radio show in 1986 that Karen Carpenter was not bulimic. I also disagree with him that Karen's beautiful voice was never affected by her illness.

After practicing for months, on the day of performance the Carpenters cancelled because she was sick.
