I think biggest aspect of these engines is regular oil changes. Valve train and anything to do with that aspect is delicate to oil quality.

Some information from my dad who used to work in Chrysler's warranty department before he passed. The reason these engines are having failing rocker arms in years before 2019 is because the engines were originally designed for 30 weight oil and then were back spec'ed to 20 weight oils because of CAFE fuel economy standards. The problem is that 20 weight oils have a lower HTHS (High Temperature High Sheer) rating which means that there is less ability for the oil to keep parts separated under high load areas of the engines such as in the needle bearings used in these earlier rocker arms before they were switched to a solid large pin (no needle bearing) design in late 2019. You can buy these rocker arms. The MOPAR Part numbers end in AH. Anything earlier than this will still have the needle bearings and not the solid pin. A work around if your engine is lower mileage and not ticking is to choose a 30 weight oil (which the owners manual says you can use) which has as high of a HTHS rating as possible. 30 weight oils will be 2.9 or higher. Amsoil XL for example is the highest I've found at 3.3 HTHS. (Heavy Duty Diesel Truck Engines specify a minimum of 3.5 HTHS for cam loading for this reason) In a 20wt oil it's 2.6 minimum and this is too low to protect these needle bearings. The other thing that you can do to ensure you don't suffer from issues is to not idle your engine too long (lack of oil flow to the top part of the engine). You don't have to take my word for it, but it's an easy change to make to ensure you don't suffer from this in your 2019 and previous Dodge Caravan, Journey or Jeeps that don't use the PUG Gen 3 engines as found in things like the Grand Cherokee, RAM pick-ups, Dodge Durango's (not Promasters or Chargers), These engines with the PUG 3 design have the Variable Vale Lift and use a different Rocker Arm design to accommodate the VVL system and don't suffer from this same problem.

I currently own a 2013 ram CV tradesmen which is a Dodge Caravan cargo van basically. My vehicle has a 3.6 L Penta star V6 engine it is excellent excellent excellent. I currently have 481,920 miles on this vehicle it run. Super smooth. It's very powerful and it delivers excellent fuel economy at about 26 on the highway in cruise control, and almost 20 miles to the gallon regularly around town. The body of the vehicle is excellent. Afew weeks ago I became the proud owner of a 2023 Charger GT "Last Call" edition. I have never owned a Chrysler Corporation vehicle but I've had more than my fill of GM cars and trucks and all the poor reliability and build issues associated with them. I was VERY tempted to go with an RT Hemi version with the sweet sounding 5.7 V8, but with gas prices uncertain, I took a chance that the 3.6 V6 would be all I needed. Never even test drove a car with the V6 so I had no idea what I was getting into. WOW what a pleasent surprise! That 300 hp engine moves my 4100 pound car quite rapidly!! And it's so SMOOTH you will have a very difficult time determining if it is runnning at all. Almost zero vibration. Probably the smoothest engine I have ever owned! I am sure I made the right choice, Now if it just had that awesome V8 rumble from the exhaust!

There are a lot of options when it comes to aftermarket exhaust 😅 I just put an aFe high tuck exhaust (basically a muffler delete, still got the resonator and cats) and with the 6MT she makes a good pop and rumble. I just saw a video about putting cams on the 3.6 challengers and couple with the right headers and exhaust and thne you can make it sound pretty dope (I seen and sound clip and was impressed)

I have a 2018 jeep jk with 3.6 star 74k miles Mine drives flawless runs so quiet you can't even tell its running when it's on. BUT I Change my oil every 1500 miles ,always with marvel mystery synthetic not the original with royal purple, every 5 k I drop in a liqui moly molybdenum the $50 dollar one I leave it in a full interval. My engine is tight no tick noises no nothing. I'm about to change my coil packs & plugs I got NKG coil packs was $175 for 6 NGK laser iridium plugs $75 Although I have no oil filter housing problems I'm about to change it out to an all aluminum one amazon $160 I'm doing that the same time I change my packs & plugs because might as well bcuz everything will be in fingers reach. That's my 18 JKU. Update I forgot to say that I had to take it back go the dealership twice for rear main seal & my rear dana 44 spider gears exploded so the dealership gave me a brand new whole rear end I didn't pay 1 cent . Besides those problems nothing else but if I'm on a trail and I flex the jeep in a certain way my driver door will pop open at first I thought it was funny. The driver door if you open it with the jeep parked the door chime will annoy you to death so I cut the wires. Ball joints ball joints BALLLLL JOINTS 😡 my ball joints blew out & I had crazy death wobble but I put in heavy duty ones .

The 3.6 V6 is amazing, still feels fast for a Jeep wrangler, it’s actually pretty impressive that V6 almost had 300 HP and very torquey with the max power band coming in at around 1200-6000 rpm. Very good engine and easy to work on yourself with some KZfaq tutorials at least for the wrangler cause it’s so much space in the engine bay to work on and can easily get under the car since it’s high off the ground…seriously I know the early 3.6 pentastar had issues but it’s better than a lot of engines now. Have 110,000 miles and still runs strong. Just maintain yall car and will likely last 500,000 miles easily

It's good to see all of these praises for the 3.6. I'm on the fence with mine. I bought my 15 Ram Tradesman 4x4 with 150,000 on the clock. I have since replaced 20 rockers and 8 lifters, 1 injector, the oil filter housing, upper and lower intakes and both valve covers (not just the gaskets) due to stripped threads. It's always had sort of a "hot" smell to it. It now has 167,000 on it. I've done all the work myself hopefully it pays off in the long run. I run 5w30 Valvoline High Mileage.

Last month I took my 2014 Chrysler Town & Country to the dealership after the CEL came on. Code P0302. Compression test #2 100psi. Failed leakdown test. Burnt valves. Only problem I noticed was irregular idle the day the CEL came on. Cylinder Head replacement $3000. Friday the CEL light came on again. Waiting for diagnosis from dealer. Only $6500 of warranty work since new. 135,000 miles. I bought the Chrysler Maximum Care Lifetime Warranty when new. Add in possible another $3000 cylinder head and the “service park assist” display that came in the week before. Could be an additional $500 to fix that. Is $10,000 in warranty work a record? Dealer called today. They’re replacing the drivers side cylinder head. $3000 + $3000= $6000. (Warranty) Update 11/21/23. Just got back from local CJDR dealer. Ticking sound. Waiting for warranty approval on THIRD cylinder head Replacement!!! Third THIS YEAR.

Hi! Had the same issue with my 2011 Town&Country. Possible causes to look at: - Dirty throttle body -> engine doesn't get enough air at idle -> disassemble, clean, reeinstall - Vapor canister purge valve stuck open -> engine draws secondary air -> replace - Hose to vapor canister purge valve cracked or broken -> engine draws secondary air -> replace I did all three things, most likely cause was the throttle body which was really nasty after 150.000 km. Unfortunately, those aspects of the design are essentially unchanged and, as a result, the oil filter housing is still very prone to cracking in areas that see large temperatures swings (especially extreme cold). At about 50K miles on my 2013 Wrangler it started hesitating badly and threw some codes. I took it to the stealership and they cleared the codes and couldn't find anything wrong. I had to drive back and drive the mechanic around in it to show him the issue. He then agreed. A day later they call and tell me it needed a spark plug replaced to the tune of $820. They recommended doing all of them. 6 spark plugs don't add up to over $800 so I asked why it costs so much. They told me to get to 3 of them you have to take off the intake (true) and replace the gaskets (lie). I asked which side the offending plug was on and they said the easy one. I told them to change those three and they still charged over $200. When I picked the Jeep up they stressed how the spark plugs should be changed every 30K miles. I said "My 2008 Silverado still has the original plugs and runs like new." In fact it's never thrown a code except tire pressure sensors. I told them if it needed new plugs, I'd watch a YT video and do the work myself next time. Anyway I sold the Jeep before it could foul more plugs.

lot of plastic on these engines. hot/cold cycles will weaken the plastic parts....especially Arizona. Watch those oil galley bolts near the front of engine around the cam reluctor wheels. Also, convert the oil cooler housing to a metal one....leaking problems down the road. Noticed 90% of comments are positive.

If you managed to get a 3.6L that your not going through tune ups, oil coolers, rockers, lifters and cams your good but these engines are terrible for it. Idling in long periods is a recipe for disaster. I don't like 5w-30 really thin, good for start up but after the engine breaks it down some engines get that unknown friction

Why in the world did they put this engine in the Promaster? My 159" Promaster 2500 really struggles. The van has a GVWR of 8900 pounds. Chrysler should have found a engine with more torque.

So this is the answer for Mopar wow. Now with all.of the issues with this engine which baffles me the most is now in the new RAMs they drop this junk motor in it and drop a turbo in it. The only way I can see them get their die hard customer base back is a redesigned Gen 4 Hemi without the lifter, and camshaft issues. Without that, they will be in a constant bailout until the government cuts them off and then the death nail to them all together. Those are their choices.

I have a 2014 charger sxt, use synthetic oil. At 136,000 miles, valve spring broke, dropped valve in cylinder and ruined the engine. Replaced engine, 36,000 miles later, valve spring broke, dropped valve into cylinder, ruined engine. Replaced engine, traded car for Nissan, no more dodge products for me.

My group removes them from our harm. 540 Rat blog says quaker state full synthetic 5w30 is better than amsoil. I change my filter every 1-2k. Mobil 1 filters. No engine issues. Changed thermostat with dorman metal housing, serpentine belt q100k, hoses q100k, champion 9407 oem plugs q100k, coils q200k. Oil filter housing with dorman at 100k. Never since. Trans 8 speed pan with oem oil q30k. No issues. Love this engine. Oh....no cats. Im allergic. Lol. 😮

Na, don't buy any vehicle with that engine because it has an oiling problem where the valve train doesn't get enough oil causing camshaft and lifter wear. The manufacturer hasn't corrected this problem yet.
