This happened to me during my tool making class with Alex Steele and I was making a hammer eye punch. He explained that my striker wasn't hitting the metal hard enough. Sort of like your explanation of using too light of a hammer for the size of stock. Chamfering the edges is a great trick I need to remember.

+eviltwinx yeah the chamfering of the edges is a great trick when working with thick material it seems a bit redundant but works out in the long run for sure. The other thing that affects this a lot is when working with tool steel as it with stands in packed a lot better than mild Steel. Knocking the edges back will work for both just takes longer with tool steel.

This was a perfect explanation. I'm doing a lot of hooks lately, and sometimes when I forge the ?rats tail? on the tip, I suddenly have two of them, which or formed by carps mouth I think.

the spliting on the end of your rat tail can also be caused by working it at too cool a tempurature. but you are rigtht, the fish lippin that he's talking about can also be the cause.

+M.T.B. Crafts that could be the very thing that's happening or like the other guy commented it could be forging it down too cold depending on the material most the time it's carps mouth though on larger material.

+aussie anvil thank you for the great comment. I will see what I can do about the 3D pig head. Might make it into a roasting Fork instead of a fire poker as I have plenty of those :-)

Besides the hammer weight, can this have something to do with not having the metal up to temp all the way thru?

..I did this on purpose a couple of times. I was attempting to make a couple of Veining fuller punches. Seems like when you don't want them there they are. And, when you are trying to, well, get the cut off hardy tool...!!
