Nice! I was thinking about how to index on the ML7 and I went through the same thought process you did. I first thought about indexing on the drive gear but realized the toothcount was impractical. Then I thought of using the 60 tooth backgear somehow and now I came across your video about doin just that with a practical carriagestop as a bonus. Thanks for this. I'll probably endup using your design for the most part with a few adaptations because I don't own a mill.

Nice. A lathe that can't divide is one-armed person. I like that sacrificial bar idea.

When I do get round to assemble my lathe. That bolt on bar will be the first thing I'll add

Ade, that was really a helpful video. I bought a ML7 about 10 months ago and have been updating it. I've been thinking about a stopping bar fro the saddle & had no clue. I love the sacrificial bar, that's fantastic man. Thanks for sharing 👍👍

Thanks Hugo, the sacrificial bar has helped me add many extras without compromising the originality of the lathe, thanks for the reply and happy turning to you :) Best regards. Ade

You've beat me to it Ade, the indexing divice is going to be an upcomming project, I hope to make an expanding mandrel for the spindle end the same way you have, not sure how I'll set up the indexing pin yet. Great video

Great idea. It needs a hole so you can still keep the little hex key for the back gears in one of the holes!

Neat. I am looking for a good way to attach indicator clocks on mine. The imperial dials dont make much sense to me. Converting it is a pain, and the dials are hard to read anyway. But there are so few flat spots on the myfords. Your bar could work for many things. But I dont like drilling into the lathe either

Hi Auarhau, I work with both metric and imperial when on the lathe, but I find it fairly simple to quickly convert from metric and then work the lathe using it's native language, it becomes 2nd nature after a while, and you learn to appreciate the simplicity of english sizes soon enough

G'day Ade congrats on a well thought out carriage stop, it's one of the best that I've seen now I'm wondering weather I could fir it to a Sieg SC6 Lathe as I like how it doesn't lock on to the ways, good one mate another interesting video regards John

Thanks John for the comment, I dont know the Sieg lathe but if there is a flat surface you can work with then the idea should be duplicatable

Great project.. Thank you.. I wonder I one cannot make a carriage stop that will disengage the half nut at certain point.. that way one can use the lead screw and still disengage when needed

That would be very useful Evo K, I could use one of those :)

That is a really useful stop and the indexer is great too. But a sacrificial bar! I don't think so, that is a replaceable adapter plate!

Could the knob be designed to allow for a quarter turn locking out the indexing pin from engaging thus freeing a hand and not constantly fighting the spring pressure? Please don't get me wrong, it's a well thought out design., I just wonder if there is any room for tweaks. I hope I have explained myself adequately.

Hi Grant, yes indeed, a locking pin would be very useful

I’m thinking of making the wedge pin end v-slotted so you can turn it a quarter to index half-positions on the tooth crest. That way you can index a 100 line graduated dial with a 50 tooth wheel. I might struggle to fit a 100 tooth wheel on my little ML1.

I always think it is a mistake to drill holes in an otherwise perfectly original machine. Even though it works well for you. I would always look for another solution. These machines are special and should be respected in their original guise.

Thanks Chris, I fully agree with you regarding drilling holes in a classic machine, but I didnt manage to come up with a better solution

It’s a difficult decision isn’t it. On the one hand vintage machines are things you want to preserve, but at the same time they were made to be used. Unless it’s going to be a museum piece, I think one has to take a view on the appropriate compromise. I have a 1936 ML1 which has been butchered somewhat by previous owners. So I’m trying to restore it sympathetically, while turning it into a very usable little machine. definitely like the idea of a single pair of mounting holes for the sacrificial bar to minimise further modification of the castings. But any holes in mine will be BSF or BSW!

Great idea! May I please ask what size/thread the original holes on the front of the spindle base are? You have tapped extra M5 holes but on mine there are two fixing holes for the quick change gearbox bolts and I'd like to use them if possible...

Hello Ade, Sorry to bother you again... I was wondering if you still use the indexing device a couple of years later from when you made this video... I like that is it a simple design... Take care. Paul,,

Hi Paul, yes I still use it occasionally, depending on what I am doing, I also use an indexed backplate on my chuck
